... if everyone 'liked' the Kony2012 page on Facebook, it shows that those who 'liked' it actually care,..

I would really dispute that. Liking stuff on Facebook is actually an incredibly worthless measure of popularity; its just too damn easy.

Having said that, and while I'm a deeply cynical human being, and tend to agree with Wazz's analysis and even (*shudders*) Toht; there is something in this campaign. Its ridiculously simplistic in its execution but the noise it creates will be used as a lobbying tool (I actually think it fails by thinking the rent-a-celeb route is the right next step, George Clooney and Bono are the advocacy equivalent of white noise at this stage), and in places like Washington, the simple act of getting front of mind with politicians is half the battle (you know the average mid-western senator doesn't give a fuck about Uganda and couldn't find the place on a map, but they'll be hearing about this from their kids over breakfast and they'll start thinking about the photo op). Its one of those unfortunate truisms about online that quantity (in this case several million useless advocates) always trumps quality (the lone impassioned observer).

Misquote there, I said to some extent, that's why it's powerful, because if you see x million 'liking' something, it's a bit like saying signing a petition is easy, because with the interwebs, face it, it is easy.

Of course the majority of people are simply 'bandwagoning' and have no idea about the issues at hand, so the fuck what? The message is at least getting out there and however miniscule the effect is, even bringing this discussion into the mainstream is valuable in itself.

The term wilful ignorance also bothers me. If you are an aware enough of an issue to actively avoid engaging with it then perhaps ignorance is the wrong word to apply. Those who are truly ignorant are simply not aware of the scope of these problems, a campaign such as this at least attempts to change this.

so the fuck what?

The viral nature of it breeds resentment.

My Annoying Facebook Friends © were posting the link and saying "omg we need to to do something!". Like, what exactly? what shall we do? It was a completely empty gesture to gratify themselves, riddled with ignorance and a lack of understanding. If they (as in, the "we" referred to in the status update) actually want to do something about, then I and a lot of people probably do not have an issue with it.

I have respect for those that go to Everest base camp in the name of charity, or cycle the length of the UK to create awareness, or even arrange a large petition to get debated by parliament. But these cunts that think CTRL C, CTRL V "post" makes a blind bit of difference just wind me up.

Whilst we're at it, I even found a meme to illustrate my point:

Of course it's incredibly annoying and often self serving, but that doesn't change the fact that currently the story about Kony is in the top 5 most popular articles on the BBC news page. The sheer traction of thing means it might actually elicit a government response, which would be a huge achievment.

Have you also considered the fact that this campaign might spurn on invidividuals to learn more about the issue? Whilst most of the herd will simply just repost/like the meme because they want their 5 seconds of daily self satisfaction, the opportunity (however unlikely) that it will inspire people to take real action is always there.

The reason this Kony shit is bad is that the charity that made it, spends most of their money on themselves their staff, their travel costs, etc, and very little on the children - essentially they are whoring advertising to make jobs for themselves rather than any legitimate effort to help the situation.

You've described most charities right there. What's the normal ratio for charities? 30-40% of monies reaching recipients? At best i think.

this does just seem to have become this weeks cause celebre.

next week theyll be something floating around facebook about saving dolphins from being turned into tuna cans.

It's not like the situation in Uganda is new is it? The only way the social media campaigners will actually change anything is if they all form a mercenary company and head for Uganda to kick his arse in person.

No 1 is Sudan which has it's own share of human rights/war issues ( South vs North separation , and this little province in its west called Darfur from the not too distant past), No 2 is Ethiopia also a place with war/human rights issues.

Stick a pin anywhere in Africa and you'll find a country with human rights/war issues. :(

but thats the point of it. Its not a charity. Their job is not to build schools. Their purpose is to create awareness of his crimes and help governments focus on getting him to face the charges. So all that whine coz they "only" spent 3.x million on helping the communities and had a wooping 1.2 million travel expenses fail to realize that thats the price for having however many children from Uganda to come over and tour US to create awareness. To open op new quarters around the globe and to go to Uganda in the first place.

It costs nothing to make whole of Facebook/Twitter/reddit/9gag/whatever aware of him. It takes nothing to get celebs to post about him. But it takes Public opinion to make the people in power do ANYTHING about it.
