Hi all,

My friends thinking of getting an iPod Classic. I wanted to help them put some of their dvd's/tv series on to it.

I know they play MPEG-4 and H.264, however I have a couple of questions.

1) What free software can rip a dvd?
2) What free software can get round the security they sometimes put to stop you ripping them.
3) What free software can convert .avi, .divx & the default dvd format into MPEG-4?

Thanks in advance

p.s. if need be, send me a pm :p

I would rather get a Sony Walkman - that way you are not quite so held back by Apple and its software

Hi Bahumat

If your friend owns a Mac and uses iTunes, an iPod would probably be best as it will integrate nicely with the Apple 'ecosphere' of products and services. That said, the range of software for converting video will probably be broader for Windows-based PCs.

As for alternative players, there are so many. iRiver, Creative, and so many other companies all make nice audio-video players which support a vast array of features and file formats. Sony are nice, but not without their limitations.

Regarding the software, please be careful what you ask about, otherwise the thread will be locked if dodgy software starts to be mentioned.

Kind regards

Hi Jonty,

They have a Mac and use iTunes so we thought the same. We should not need to worry too much about the conversion software format as they have a windows based machine. Worst case, we can convert on the windows machine and copy it over :p

Ahh yes, iRiver, my friend has one and it looked great, however i'd forgotten all about those! Thanks, will have to check them out.

No worries about dodgy software questions, I hoped (and am glad it was) that free software was available, without using foul methods hehe.

I have a Creative Zen at the moment, they suck because you cannot charge them properly without the software being installed (I charge it at work and you only get about 10%-20% from it), however on my home pc it charges really fast. Its not a power issue, just a fault I've read a few posts about.

What's crazy is you can't download drivers online, and my work pc has no cd-rom drive :-(

anyways enough rambling, thanks again for your help!

Creative have often suffered with fantastic hardware at good prices but SHOCKING software issues and driver support.
I'll never be a fan of Apple and iPods etc but the important thing is that it works at the end of it, and works to your satisfaction; after all, you paid for it :)

If you still need any conversion software, Super (google it, suprisingly its first hit) is fantastic for all AV conversion and does any format to any other format. And it's free.

Mac-wise, Handbrake is the Daddy for DVD ripping. Then, whilst Quicktime Pro will do quite hardcore format conversion, I've always found that iSquint is a handy little tool for converting any video into H.264.

Personally, I've never been convinced by the iPod Classic form factor for video. As a music jukebox it's great, but the screen is hardly video optimised. Budget willing, a 16GB or 32GB iPod Touch would make for a better viewing experience.

1) What free software can rip a dvd?

If its you and you have a pc:

DVD decrypter - free and still available - just make sure sure rip to a single file under IFO (there are two options you need to click under options to get a single file), and strip the adverts and titles (main movie option).

2) What free software can get round the security they sometimes put to stop you ripping them.

As above. Its a little old now, but I've only ever had a problem ripping once and then I went for anyDVD by slysoft (not free, btw).

3) What free software can convert .avi, .divx & the default dvd format into MPEG-4?

I think mediacoder will do this and its foc (I use this software). Bever tried it but there are conversion presets for iPODs, other handhelds and phones. Available from MediaCoder - more than a universal audio/video transcoder
