dude, without trying to make you paranoid, that stuff is mostly turned on by default on any mobile device. unscrupulous apps will record your fine GPS coords and send them where ever, and it's going to stay that way until legislation catches up.

Fortunately with Android the apps you download list what access they have. Most with adverts have a coarse GPS location for relevant ads.

indeed, though it's a scary thought that Google is my protector here, and not The Law 0o

Unless you use third party map software. On android you can get an app called CoPilot that stores the maps on your sd card.

^ you still need GPS and potentially assisted GPS to use that.

That's not really the point teeds. This is a file that can be hacked locally (e.g. if they know what they're doing, someone you know can access all your movements if they can borrow your phone for a wee while) and its not using GPS, its using the cell triangulation so it can't be switched off. The biggest question is, why are Apple storing it? Its clearly not an accident since it updates via MobileMe when you switch phones.

Now its known this file is there, it makes your iPhone intrinsically unsafe from prying eyes (because there'll be software to read the file available in a matter of days).

Apple have 'splainin to do.

funny, that wouldn't even be my major concern:

I am more worried about the phone sending my location away, via which (in my case) Google would know where I, eg my physical self, not my google persona that I use for non-secure mail and stuff, was at all times.

Now this file doesn't fill me with the same amount of woe: I would never, ever, ever loan my phone out to anyone. My phone is locked with a pattern code and a numerical one in case it gets stolen. If this file is persistent and locked to a specific phone rather than your account, then I would have second thoughts, and naturally I already have several thoughts about why the file is recorded by Apple as is.

Even the researchers that discovered it think it's more likely error than maliciousness on Apple's part. Either way its negative publicity for them, given that I'm sure it will be cleared up. IN the mean time jailbreakers can simply delete the file.

Who gives a monkeys. We're all tracked anyway by our dirty dirty governments:

... its not using GPS, its using the cell triangulation so it can't be switched off...

And Apple has always been dirty, as Tom nicely illustrated:

"The iPhone system, by contrast, appears to record the data whether or not the user agrees. Apple declined to comment on why the file is created or whether it can be disabled."

Fuck them all. Fuck them in the ear.

I suspect alot of people in relationships that have been playing away are trying to find out how to get rid of the information. Anyone that suspects their partners/gf's will surely be checking their phones!!!!

My wife can look at my phone all she wants. Denying her that right would be like not answering where I had just spent the last 5 hours if she asked.

If my wife asked to use my phone she can, if I've been dumb enough to leave shit on there that would some way imply I was up to no good then I deserve to get caught.

Being in a relationship is about trusting and sharing 100%

Absolutely with you there; if my missus wants to use my phone then no problem. If she then turned round and said "yeah, I checked your entire message history to make sure you weren't fucking my best mate", then I don't see that as being very trusting.

Yes but if on your first mesage page, when she was sending a message she could see a message you should not have sent, she would then of course look further. I suspect it's the same thing if she uses your phone book to make a call. there tends to be a history of calls, if I had 30 calls to a female my wife didn't know, again she would be justified in questioning me.

I trust my wife to not use my phone and go through everything, but it's easy to show that trust when I know there isn't anything there to hide in the first place. If I had stuff on the phone and my wife asked to see it I'd imagine her suspicions would increase if I said with that I need to do something on it first.

To me trust goes the other way around; if you think i'm cheating, deal with it or leave.

I would, in no circumstance, none what so ever, even remotely cheat on anyone, or even consider touching a taken woman.

But...if you don't trust me enough without asking where i've been or what i'm doing with my phone or "what was that look you gave her" or "i don't like your female friend hanging around".

Well, see above. Only problem is that doors open out in Finland, so can't slam it in someones face/arse :(

That being said; asking to borrow phone is a whole different territory, it still wouldn't give permission to go rummaging around.

Euphemism?

Nah, funny difference in cultures. Here every door opens towards the out(damn word filter :eek7:), which ofcourse makes breaking and entering a b*tch. Not that it doesn't happen, but not much door kicking going on.
