Speaking of animals in wild places, I tried to clear some of the weeds out of my pond this afternoon. I grabbed a handful and pulled it and was just had time to see this black slimey slug thing scurry down into the depths. I've no idea what it was so I've come up with three possibilities:

a) Theres a huge leech that can run like lightning in my pond.
b) It was some kind of primeval swamp lizard, with no tail.
c) The frogs are breeding some kind of mutant super frog. An Urak Hai of the frog world, if you will.

You've got it lucky just losing a cat in the kitchen, Tdc mate.

you've told us about your pond 'o doom and the rat-eating frogs before Fwed. I still think it's waste seeping in from the secret nuclear bunker somewhere under your back garden :eek7:

After all these long years of being a faithfull subscriber I get shafted at the critical point.

true, that snake is a lot smaller than the last snake I saw up close and personal like. there are certain downsides to growing up in indonesia, and very large snakes in your garden is one.

Long years? It'll be one year in 3 days foo'.

Also, that is a big snake for these here parts, I don't care how big they were in SA, I don't live there :p

we once got the day off school cos there was a very_large_snake() in one of the classrooms. the guards took their guns and blew it's head to red mush. the rest measured about 6 meters iirc (but I may be wrong as I was only 6 :))

Fwed, how big was this 'thing'. It might have been a young snake like mine, as they range from almost black in colour to the fairly light one you see in my pic. Or if it was just an inch and a half or so, it could have been a bullfrog tadpole, theres loads of them invading this country now.

I had a pet leech when I was small, and they tend to be fairly thin in this country, so i doubt it was one of them, but you never know.

legs? then it's a lizard, mouse or a vole or summat. aren't there water-voles? my biology is very hazy atm.

Yep there are water voles, but that would have come up again fairly quickly to breathe. Maybe it was a newt, I had one of those as a pet too, it was called Nina. The leech was a fascinating pet, it used to eat spiders that fell in it's ice cream box. We went on holiday and the water dried up, so we thought it was dead, then when I put water into the box it came back to life again. It was great....

Co-incidently, I am doing a week of cover for GMTV, and this morning we were filming a guy who has lost one of his snakes. He still had the other, a big contrictor. After the hits, he put the snake around my neck. It is the most bizarre feeling! The snake is very very smooth, and slightly warm. As it moves around you, you can feel it's muscles tensioning to keep hold of you!

It did manage to dribble all over my sound kit though :/

Was kind of bizarre, standing in a guys back garden in Sheffield at 0600, watching him shoot pigeons out of the tree in his garden to feed his snake. I only wish I'd taken my stills camera.
