How many played UO before DAoC ?

Just wondering, as I have seen a few posts recently that smacked of UOishness (tm) :D .
What UO abilities would you like to have in DAoC. I know rune books, gating and the like are high on peoples lists. I don't think that would work in DAoC imagine if all the high lvls could gate into, for instance, a keep being attacked, pretty crap I feel. Personal horses again not a great idea imho for DAoC, part of the fun/excitement must come from the fact that the 10 mins your going to take to get to the frontier keep and then on to the keep defense re-take might make you too late. Lumberjacking, mining resource gathering of all varieties again no it screwed the money system in UO (along with many other things) right now DAoC has a very good set of money sinks. Housing, well its coming in the future. I can't pesonally think of much I would want to see, although I do miss Kal Ort Por :p maybe the ability to be a ghost for a while after i am killed  unable to speak of course don't want to be a spy. Maybe follow my killer for a while and ooOOooooOo at him/her for a while ;)

Yeah played UO too, in the end dumped it when I just couldn't afford to buy a house and didnt have enough space in my vault for my loot :)

Things I hated about UO i wouldnt want in DAoC

The Urban sprawl! JEEZ! Milie after mile of suburbs, looked absolutely ridiculous, housing should of been developed only around certain urbanised areas.

The fecked up economy, got to be really careful with any economic system. So far DAoC feels, alright.

What do I want?

Guild housing, as mentioned plus decorating :) Helps with roleplaying if you can tailor the environment plus some where to place..

Shopowners.

Steeds. I want cavalry charges in RvR! Not too unbalancing especially if the usage in combat was limited. I thought that any weapon/attack disrupted by moving such as spells/missile weapons would be impossible even from a stationary mount.

More side issues in general. UO was full of time wasting ideas; fishing, treasure hunts, non-combat related crafting and a more prevalent roleplaying community.

But, I joined UO quite late. How much of the above was there in the 1st year of the game?

I played UO on catskills and Europa. I stopped playing after Pub16 came out. Shop keepers would be great, would take the pressure off the crafters to be around all the time.

I played and GMed on a free shard. Things I'd like? Gate, goddamnit, or at least Recall! :)

I like the fact that you could respec when you wanted to (decrease your skills!), that when you made a char you could go either way, there were no race restrictions for classes (now I think about it, there were no races, nor base classes :))

That's what I like best, that you could do everything you wanted to do, and you were only restricted by your imagination.

You might say "Fishing, treasure hunting etc. etc. are boring useless skills.
But that just shows how much of a shortsighted person you are, small detailed and for the eye "useless" skills make the game complete.
I wish there were locked chests that randomly spawned in hollow trees and for which I need a lockpicking skill to open it in DAoC.
It would certainly make me pass time when I'm bored.
Same goes for fishing, you never had any idea what you might get, it could range from bottles containing messages to useless small fish that you could sell for money :)

It's the divversity that made UO such a big succes.
DAoC is as diverse as a spunge... not much things you can do with a spunge..
Cause DAoC == RvR. or Exping or Crafting.
And this is just talking about game mechanics, cause sure I know that the socialising part makes DAoC alot more enjoyable, but the same goes for UO.
It's the limited amount of things that DAoC provides for entertainment that makes the game boring after 6-7 months.

I'd like more reactions on this.

Well i played for over 2 years on UO, i played for over a year on atlantic server in which i was a GM of a red(player killer)guild and then i was in europa for nearly a year in which i done a fair share of factioning and roleplaying pvp guilds in which was real fun. I miss UO alot at times and then other times i don't. Reason i left UO was that most of my friends had left the game, i'd been hacked a few times and scammed in which i lost over 30m gold and rares plus a L shape house i had in occlo :( My cousin still uses my account for atlantic though.

I enjoy daoc, because the graphics are a shit load better, i don't get hacked and scammed and its more concentrated on killing, only thing is its nowhere near as much fun or skilled as the pvp/war guild system that UO has.

My account on UO is amazing, with it having 5 chars on 2 servers who are all 7 and 6 times gm and all of my chars inc my mules with 500k to 1m neon haircuts. So if i get pissed of with this game(which i am a bit seeing how its hard to find xp grps) i can always go back there.

I played UO on Europa for about 3 years. I do still have my account active but the only reason I log in these days is to say hi to old friends.

Yes the economy in UO did get very messed up during the past year, and I wouldn't like to see the same thing happen in DAoC, but to be honest DAoC doesn't really have much of an economy at the moment anyway. It is very limited what you can do with money in DAoC afterall.

Gotta agree with some points that Slapmesilly said. Little things like fishing and treasure hunting are what made UO so original. All the people selling lottery tickets and hosting gambling games outside the main bank and stuff like that. It gave a break from just killing monsters or people.

If there was something from UO I would like to see in DAoC then it would probably be moongates. Not gates that players can cast, but just gates in set locations that teleport you to another gate. For instance there could be a gate in the stone circle in skona that could teleport you to a gate up near Fort Veldon or something like that. It would save you that long tedious horse trip should you want to go there. Or maybe to just put a gate inside each town so that you can teleport to the other towns instantly.

Then again, maybe I am just being Lazy

FISHING !!! time wasting ??!??!? I made a bloody fortune out of fishing that helped buy me my small tower. Fishing may have been a bit boring boring but the money i made at the end by selling the MIB's, maps, the nets made up for the bordomness.

Lords of Enlgand (LOE) were born on UO (Europa) many years ago.

We basically ran Fire Island(hyloth) in the bottom right hand corner of the world map. LOE ran around wearing white with red capes screaming 'FOR ENGLAND', while systematically chasing round 3 german guilds that used to fight us quite a lot ;p.

Oh, what i would give for a modern day UO.....

Thieving....the most fun i have EVER had in any computer game.

UO was so unrestricted, thats what made it so great. Its a shame it turned out the way it did in the end.

Now someone please please please make a game with the freedom that UO gave the players.

I was on UO chespeake for 3 years... Had a player run town (Nidaros for all you chessy players) that i started there a week after trammel house placement :)

I do miss the shopkeepers (think how much easier crafting would be if you could just leave items for sale on a vendor instead of having to contact people in game). The ability to block people with your characters in PvP also i think is an advantage (someone running through 20 tanks to hack on mages isnt quite right... thats why you form a front line, to protect the vulnerable in the back).. But the characters are much more diverse here on DAOC. There is more to playing your character than running up and hacking on a monster and applying bandaids every once in a while. Also i like the aggro levels on DAOC. Monsters attack the first person they see or randomly on UO.. on DAOC it matters how much damage you do.

Not to mention UO-3d looked like crap... so finally got bored, sold all my stuff (over 10 homes and about as many accts that i had to hold them)... The economy is so much steadier on DAOC cuz selling DAOC stuff is bannable (its not bannable on UO) so people dont place real life money values on items and give away things freely.

Of course it would be nice to run DAOC in a window (yeah i know there are programs out there that do it, but you just dont get the whole feel of DAOC in a window type environment like you can on UO in 2-D). But they have the in game messaging system on DAOC (/send or /gu /ch etc) which they didnt have on UO.. you actually had to find someone in game or use ICQ to talk to people.

And last but not least.. RP.. roleplay was a lot more prevaliant on UO than it is here.. mainly i think because people could have a place of their own and set it up the way they wanted it (ie a house). To help form their virtual roleplay world. Also items when you dropped them would be the item, not just a bag like they are here.. so you cant set up picnics or yard sales on DAOC easily :) And dressing your character.. any character could wear any type of armour plus a bunch of cloth stuff that could be made to look like some amusing combinations.. dont really see a best costume or best dressed contest here on DAOC cuz we are limited in clothing types....

dang, I forgot the clothing and RP parts!
Thanks Wyleia!

I think that there should indeed be more clothing parts that aren't molded around your char like helmets.
I want to be dressed like a jester in DAoC :D

And indeed, I had my own guildtown on a free shard, it was loads of fun and really adds to the whole UO experience, in UO you could choose not to be seen heard or talked to, in DAoC you can reach anyone anywhere as soon as they login, very unreal.
That's why it's such foolishness that GOA encourages RPing in DAoC, this game is so not fit for RPing needs.
