Isn't there a prog which can undo the limit on the amount of times you change your DVD region, firmware upgrades sound like they have a "high potential" for someone not really technical like me to fook up :>.

for PC DVD players you can get DVD Genie...which enables you to select which Region you wish to use that day...

DVD genie also backsup your registry setting which determines the region your DVD player uses within windows. When you change the region in windows it tells you have 0 times to change the Region setting. Then you restore the registry settings and you now have 1 times left to change the region...

Original was better.

RE: The Thing, directed by John Carpenter.

There is no "original" black and white version.
If you'd got the DVD and paid attention to the extras you'd have heard it stated that John based his film on a short story and NOT the B&W film.

From the IMDB:

"The Thing" is not a remake of the 1951 film "The Thing From Another World" as widely believed. It is a re-telling of the short story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell.

It may well be based on that book. But there is an orginal B&W film called The Thing (I know, I own it ;)) that has a very, very similar story.

Maybe John W. Campbell watched that film and then wrote his story.

A) If you're being pedantic, The Thing From Another World is not the original, but being based on the same book and being made quite a few years, original is the best way I know to describe it.

B) Why would I get the DVD of a movie I didn't like? I'm not rich :/

Maybe thats because you have an older DVD drive, The maufacturers now hardware lock the drives after 5 attempts.
Without getting too techy its a little program that can be removed by rewriting your DVD firmware to then allow dvdgenie etc to reset the code/attempt amounts. Dvdgenie cannot reset drives that were made with RPC-2 enabled, only RPC-1 drives can be reset.
To check which your drive is set to you can download and run this app:

http://perso.club-internet.fr/farzeno/dvdf/driveinfo11.exe

If you have a Locked drive you can find the firmware here:

http://perso.club-internet.fr/farzeno/firmware/

BE WARNED - You can damage your drive if you flash the drive wrongly.

Make sure you follow the instructions properly.

I have personally unlocked tens of drives, without fault, so dont blame me if you mess your drive up :p

Whats the point,really?

You watch a dvd, you've seen it.

Why spend £1,000's, just go down to Blockbuster, rent it, watch it, take it back.

I have precisely fuck all dvds (no dvd player either, just a ps2), and only a handfull of videos, that have all been xmas pressies.

A lot of movies can be nearly as enjoyable when viewed again. Sometimes they make more sense with subsequent viewings.

SO with £3.50 a rental from blockbuster I buy the films that i know i'll watch again.

Ok, but you would need to watch them 4/5 times to make the maths work. By the time you get to the 2nd viewing the film is probably on TV anyway in which case you could video it. Each to their own I guess :)

I prefer the clarity of a DVD's picture to the grainy shit I get from the TV.
