to be fair its better than useing a game release as an open beta , which imho is what warhammer did , that game was nowhere near ready , same as conan , THEY said it was ready and the RvR zones werent even up , and in fact for the time i played it , NEVER put in an appearence , at least saying that if u prepurchase u KNOW exactly what you are getting

Guild Wars 2 gears up for beta weekend with a producer video and WvW article

Guild Wars 2 players, are you ready for this weekend's beta event? That's the question that Marketing Coordinator David Campbell and Lead Producer Chris Whiteside want to help you with, and the duo's put together a three-and-a-half minute video to chat about the creation and hopeful execution of the game's second public beta test.

What can we expect from this beta event? "A much more evolved experience which breaks down into roughly two areas," Whiteside said. "One area is the feedback that we've gotten from the community... the second part is the content evolution that includes a new zone and the Mystic Forge."

Over on the ArenaNet blog, Systems Designer Mike Ferguson penned a post detailing all of the tweaks, fixes, and changes that the team has made to the world-vs.-world PvP for this weekend. He even posted a chart showing off the wins and losses for each server from the past beta event.

The beta weekend event starts tomorrow, June 8th, at 3:00 p.m. EDT. Hit the jump to watch the full producer's video to get ready for it!

do you need to pre order the game to be able to take part in the beta? ;<

OK seriously, why is the beta only available to people who either a) preorder GW2, or b) win a beta key in random obscure contests. That isn’t a good way to convince people to buy GW2 – you basically already have to know you want the game if you want to try the game.
We have a certain amount of server capacity. We promised people who pre-purchase that they’ll have guaranteed slots in each upcoming beta. After taking care of them, we give away remaining slots in online contests.

This should answer the question :) I know that the Norwegian community site have had quite some few beta keys to give away. I expect most of the communities does + their facebook/twitter sites.

Have I missed something about how WvW is going to work? Aren't people just going to move to the winningest server and leave the losing servers empty?

You've got to pay full price (£45 or so), otherwise it's an invite only beta.

You can only change server once every 7 or 14 days, and it costs 20 Euros :p

You can still move server to play with people on other servers at any time, you just can't play for them in WvW.

What level are most people starting WvW at?

You can start at any level, it raises you to level 80 like bolstering in SW:Tor / WAR, you don't get the skills though so it's usually worth getting a few levels anyway (7/10/20 are the milestones that you get Weaponswap/2nd/3rd utility skills)

So just logging off now. Me and 2 mates had a playa round, 1 warrior, 1 engie, 1 thief.

Best fun i've had in a mmo in along time.

Tried WvW but its pretty late so very quiet. Ran into a same sized group and killed them handily. Sleeps time now :)

level 10 tomorrow!....today!

But if I was on a server that got pawned every game, I'd be very tempted to move to another server that didn't, leaving my old server with my now dead character.

And note that you cannot get any benefit from the current round of WvW on a transferred server, so no spotting who's winning and leaping on the bandwagon for that round. Also there are player limits on how many can be in a particular World's WvW at a time (500 players total from each World or somesuch), so if a World gets overly stuffed with "easy win" fanbois they'll probably start sucking when those fanbois prove to be crap but are taking up the slots.

I don't want to play it personally until i've read what people are saying about it!

So far it seems to be good things only, but i'll decide to order it if the comments after this beta weekend are good.

Oh, it's definitely good. Combat is different to wow-style 'traditional' MMO. You do actually have to move your character around to dodge incoming fire (either just movement or actually using the dodge mechanic). There's no simple 'threat table', mobs go for whoever is most recently most annoying. The (mostly, Engineers and Elementalists have different schemes)) weapons-based first 5 skills is an interesting mechanic.

I'm still pondering if I like the new tiered Skill Points system, and a bit miffed that I can't put more than 10 points in a Trait line until level 40 (necessary to buy the next manual to open up 11+ points per line).

PvE does still need quite a bit of tuning, there are areas where you can easily steamroller the mobs and then others where even single mobs are very hard to take down without a friend helping.

WvW (in BWE1 and the stress test, not touched it yet this weekend) was huge amounts of fun, even if I was mostly trying to learn the map and mechanics. I've not tried the structured PvP yet.

Crafting also seems an interesting new system, although I'm wondering when I'll finally start learning to smelt Iron.

The actual combat mechanics are ok at the moment... it gets annoying when you take damage from a monster with a giant axe when the axe doesn't even touch you....

I also feel very useless in WvW.. I am a thief and I can barely scrape anyone with any of my attacks... so I just sit there and spam AoE and that's what a lot of others seem to be doing as well..? is it because I still have relatively low skills (only level 6-7 atm..) or is this the way it's going to be?

The actual keep sieges in WvW are a lot of fun and it did remind me a lot of the old DAoC sieges last night.. I hope to encounter some huge keeps soon though.

Indeed a Thief at low level is a bit useless in WvW if trying to be melee, and the Shortbow isn't that powerful, but still adds to the fight. I'm trying to level up enough to have enough "enter stealth" abilities to see if that adds to things by way of confusing the enemy with quick hit and run attacks.

But if I was on a server that got pawned every game, I'd be very tempted to move to another server that didn't, leaving my old server with my now dead character.

It's your account that is linked to your homeworld, not the characters. So you can only create characters on 1 server unless you pay to change server.

You can always visit other servers by guesting which isn't in beta, but I think works just like changing instance on SW:Tor. There will be people who change servers, but tbh I don't think they'll have much impact on WvW like they did in DAoC (where it was basically everyone).

Personally, I'm not a fan of WvW at all, but, I think unlike DAoC, if you're getting dominated, it's only down to seige rather than actual smaller fighting, so being on the losing team isn't quite as crushing as it could be in DAoC. Think of it more like Planetside, where even in a losing battle it's actually just fun to take part and there are always seiges you can win. Last I checked (about 5am this morning ) our server was winning with 50k points, the other 2 servers only had 3-4k each, but there were still lots of fun seiges from all 3 sides.

I think all of the GW2 mechanics are so different to the typical model for MMOs (WoW) that it's hard to explain anything properly, which is why I think it's a bit of a scam only letting people try it out of they pay the full price. A lot of people love it, but obviously it wont be for everyone as it is a very different game.

Hmm... on my server in WvW it's just one server which owns EVERYTHING... :/

Thanks for the info. That's radical. I think I like it.

Well, on Far Shiverpeaks we got a huge alliance going on already. Our first event was tonight, where we totally dominated absolutely everything. I did not attend myself, as I was attending a party. But a good alliance definitely has everything to say in this game. Hopefully Far Shiverpeaks does not get to popular, since we do not really want any one else joining us ;P

PvP has been broken tonight, sPvP was down for a few hours and lots of players on certain servers could get into WvW so most of the servers are scored like 100k v 15k v 15k :p

Yeah I noticed the New Albion :) since I'm on Underworld... anyway for some reason siege deployment is blocked on underworld (there's an icon where you see the realm buffs stating that siege deployment is disabled). No idea if that is a bug or a feature.. since Jade Quary and Far Shiverpeaks seem to have ample siege deployed.

I did get some flashbacks from daoc... ie people AFKing on top of a keep at siege waiting for hours until somebody finally comes around so they can shoot at them, lol.

Hehe yeah, so many things in WvW I can relate back to DAoC. But I also have to say that I enjoy the sPvP a lot, where Carlos will gather up our 5 best and create a good and permanent sPvP group. :)
Hopefully more of the old DAoC members of FH will join us, nothing like having hardcore PvPers on our side!

Sounds great zerging an unorganised server.. very challenging !

I have had it happen to the server I'm on and it's an absolute piss take.. if they don't sort it for release then the game is completely fucked WvW wise.. everything is owned by a scumbag server which outnumber the server I'm on 3:1 ...

Hopefully they add caps per team in WvW... 200 a server... I think the current cap is about 500-1000...
