"The government’s estimate of how much "deliberate health tourism" and those taking advantage of free NHS services cost the NHS every year was around 0.3% of NHS spending allocated to specific services in 2012/13. It’s still roughly around 0.3% of total health spending."

0.3% isn't exactly negligible - and that was back in 2012/13, i'd argue that its prob more now.

THAT SAID!

Upfront charges for NHS foreign patients in England - BBC News

That should help a bit I guess.

Of course its negligible, its barely noise in the system. And why would it be more now?

Would love to know the margin of error on that estimate, 0.3% is a large amount of money but when you think of the flipside that 99.7% is spent on other things that can easily be optimised it might not be worth fighting (and it may be solved by brexit anyway!)

Except of course Brexit means no reciprocation, so no more E111 forms for everyone who falls over drunk in Magaluf and a massive spike in travel insurance premiums.

My problem with 'foreign patients' is that what if people are on holiday and they genuinely become ill?

I feel like everyone who comes into the country on legitimate terms should be dealt with like any other person using the NHS.

Obviously people who come here to give birth then fuck off again should not be treated in this way.

I remember looking up the stats a while ago from one of those independent website thingies, and they basically said it's really hard to get proper stats because all 'foreigners' are generally lumped into two categories; 'they live here' and 'they don't live here.'

Therefore it's virtually impossible to get accurate reliable stats.

You are making the assumption that the people who fall over drunk in magaluf are also the type of people who buy travel insurance

A flawed assumption in my opinion :p

I know, from friends who have done so, falling over drunk in Magaluf and expecting the E111 to get you out of trouble will send you on a hiding to nothing - you'll be paying cash hombre.

Thats cause they get picked up by the provate ambulances or clinics. You have to go to the state run hospitals which dont patrol the bars for business

wait what? holiday == travel insurance, unless you are criminally insane. my insurance covers medical in the *cough* EU and other countries who have signed in to this increadibly fascist deal and / or are Nazis (just for Job), because naturally it's totes bad for the individual because, well, EU. otherwise I have to spend like...ooh...three euros more per month that I am on hols. MONTH. for complete coverage. if I acutally manage to get ill enough to require health care in foreign climes that are unenlightend as fuck all, damn, sucks to be me. otherwise, fuck it, it's three filthy socialist euros. the EU prolly steals it from the island dwellers anyway, because fascists and all that.

What if you're coming from Timbuktu to visit your relatives, you have no cash, you break your leg, boom.

They fix it for you and give you the bill, you go.home and never pay it.
The NHS has an army of clerical workers whose job it is to chase people up....but never catch them.

If you are going to fix them up and you know they are not going to pay why bother employing the clerical workers in the first place

That sentence sums up the public sector.

If you read the article, they recover about 40%.

0.3% is a large amount of money

It's only a large amount of money if you take it out of context.

And 0.3% of what? £100k? a billion? More?

Someone tell me how much money NHS get per year so i can see what those 0.3% actually mean. Because right now that's just a meaningless figure.

It would be interesting to see how much they collect vs how much they are chasing.

If it means that it basically ends up costing more to chase it than they collect then they either need to not bother or pass the job on to someone more capable.

Its about 116 billion pounds per year, so 0.3% ends up at around 350 million

Ok thanks, it's basically so little that making sure they get that money back would cost many times more....

There was a headline benefit fraud the other day and i thought exactly the same...

She took £15,000

General Election 2017: Nigel Farage won't stand as an MP - BBC News

Bit of a shame, would love to see him get seen off again.

I just read that, I was thinking "Of course he won't stand, he doesn't have a fucking snowballs chance in hell." - probably going to leech the last of his EU benefits before we're out, he's been on the fishing board for ages and only ever attended 1 meeting iirc, basically making him an EU benefit scrounger, funny really considering he kept claiming people outside of England were benefit scroungers.
