Future proof upgrade

So I'm still using an I5-4670k (not the worse CPU still)

Around February (my birthday) I was plan on treating myself to a future proof upgrade, currently I have a GTX 1070, so I don't need a new GFX card unless I wanted 4k+ (which tbh I couldn't care less about) I was planning on doing something like this however

Intel - Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
£276.50

MSI - Z270 GAMING M3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
£128.98

G.Skill - Trident Z RGB 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
£330.94

Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
£133.13

Corsair Obsidian 900D Black Full Tower Window Gaming Case - Aria PC £345

Thoughts? obv between now and feb the CPU could change, rest look ok? I did plan on full watercooling too but I'm not 100% sure which to go for yet, the generally idea is for this to last 5+ years.

Never gonna future proof anything. But that said 345 on a case. Ouch.

Already unfuture proofed. the 8000 series isn't compatible with z270.

Go AM4, AMD is supporting it until 2020.

So his birthday in Feb 2018 - support until 2020. :)

TBH @BloodOmen - what games require it? I can run everything on my shitty old rig because consoles have hobbled PC development...

Probably no point updating anything at the moment unless it's really old. Bank the cash and wait until Spring.

Any suggestion for AMD CPU @ECA ?

The 1600x is dope.

6core/12thread with 4ghz boost clock for £210.
As a comparison intels coffee lake i5 is 6 core 6 thread with 4.3ghz boost at £270.

For more workstation the 1700 is insanely good value 8core/16 thread with 3.7ghz boost for £260.

Difference between 1700 and 1700x @ECA? (Both of those bundles are the same price)

A little tempted to upgrade my old AMD Phenom II X3 Black Edition, but want a motherboard with onboard RAID and about 8 SATA ports too.

1700x has higher boost clock, if it's the same price or negligible then it's worth it. Benefit will be a few fps in some games.

I wouldn't buy either of those bundles though.

Ryzen and AM4 platform in general benefits massively from ram clock speed, that bundle has 2400 - it's actually worth shelling out for 3200 ( and check motherboard compatibility list, it's very important on ryzen ).

Hmm, I thought the 1600x cost more but looking at it on pcpartpicker its only £191.

On reflection i'm not going to buy that expensive case, I did want to get a good watercooling setup which was the main reason for buying the case but meh, can prob get a good wc setup on much cheaper cases.

How does this look? older version of the above case / cheaper stuff

System Builder - Ryzen 5 1600X 3.6GHz 6-Core, 750D ATX Full Tower - PCPartPicker United Kingdom

That lot + the GTX 1070 I have should last quite awhile.

I honestly wouldn't bother with water cooling. Ryzen runs a lot cooler than you'd think.

With the stock cooler my 1700 on 100% load is hitting 70C with stock shitty thermal paste.

Owt wrong with those motherboards if I swapped out the RAM @ECA?

Edit: Ah yeah, they don't support 3200...

Playing Witcher 3 on my crappy old Phenom II X3 and an R9 280x, running peachy. Can't justify upgrade on that basis.

Unless I get a 1080 and start mining on it to pay itself off ;)

Looking at the new coffee lake i7 @ECA - looks like it spanks the Ryzen at similar price?

@Scouse Seems like they are nice, but at the same price?

Doesn't look like it to me btw, I see 6 benchmarks where it's basically on par for gaming with the top 5+ intel/amd and 1 bench where it does very well.

You can get a 1600x for £210, the 8600k is £280.

So maybe 10% of games you'd get some extra fps, and for all cpu crunching workstation stuff it'd be behind because it has less threads.

Plus AM4 support until 2020, while your intel mobo you can throw in the trash as soon as next gen comes out.

Also as soon as you go past 1080p, even in the outlier benchmarks, it seems like it's lead disappears and any recently modern cpu looks like it's gpu bound instead.

Will say that the i5 8400 looks like a great value chip though.

It's 6 cores/6threads, but for the price incredible. £180 ish is great.

I'd still go 1600x , because it's £200-210 sure, but you wont be throwing your motherboard in the trash in 2018, or 2019, or 2020.

If you go coffee lake you do.

I last bought a motherboard in, like, 2009, so even if "support" ends I wouldn't be buying again until it's ready for trash anyway.

The 8600x is trashing the 1800x btw - for similar price. And I don't really do much productivity stuff.

To be fair tho - been playing more witcher. Still can't see why I'd bother tbh :/

The only thing with saying that the motherboard is future proof for 2 and a bit years is that you then assume you will need to change the CPU in that time. If you don't, and I certainly wouldn't expect to the way the old ones keep going, then it really doesn't come into it. Also, if you do need to change the CPU, a new motherboard platform might bring further innovations, whereas tying yourself to the previous platform can prevent you from keeping up.
At the end of the day though, you're likely to see several chipsets come and go before you upgrade a CPU next, in the majority of cases. My core i5 3570 still handles anything I throw at it quite comfortably, and that's now 5 generations behind.

Yep. Unfortunately with PC game development being tied to consoles, and consoles being 5 generations behind anyway, where's the impetus to move forward? :(

Water cooling really not make that much diff @ECA ? if so i'd just use the Noctua I have currently, DH-15 I think? saves me £100.

Seriously, newer gen cpus and gpus run at least 10-20 deg cooler than 5+ years ago, water cooling is just for aesthetics these days and water pumps are often louder than a large air cooler.

Why would you get a 2.5" SSD rather than m2?

Cost, one would imagine.

Edit, having said that, the price appears to have dropped quite a lot on M.2

Not to mention they sometimes need so many fans to keep the water cool it actually lowers the temp in the room. Happened to a friend of mine when he bought a (albeit second handed) watercooled PC. Took him 3 months to notice that his AC pump REALLY REALLY hated that.. :D

@ECA (or anyone else tbh...)

Would you?
Given that I'd keep this going for ever (wouldn't be upgrading, next PC this would get chucked...)

I dunno, what's your use case outside of gaming?
