Wrong. Alfa Giulietta 1.4 Multiair. 170 brake, runs on God's own fuel, does 60 in 7.8 seconds, yet puts out 134 carbons and will do 48mpg apparently, on cheaper fuel. Oh, and it also gets a higher rating in evo than the comparable A3.

However I'm not sure using evo for an Audi's defence is all that sensible, considering two of the columns this month are slating Audis for being a bit rubbish to drive.

Bodhi, with respect, you're being a bit of a knob now.

1) Alfa isn't on the approved list of cars
2) There are no petrols worth getting on the approved list, hence my remark "it's diesel or nothing".

The only petrols I could see worth a shit were:

- Cooper S (too small)
- Audi 1.8 TFSI (not economical enough)
- BMW 118i (no thanks)

I happen to think the Giulietta is a gorgeous car and I'm well aware of it's paper credentials, but I can't get it.

Last time I filled up it cost £118. I try not to think about it!

I borrowed a 530d during the week. 21mpg I got out of it. What do I win?

I've also been using the 320cd for commuting purposes this week. It is costing EXACTLY the same as the 328i. How does that work?

Most people drive with concrete boots on, a lot try not to but give it a day and they are back to old habits.

4.0 V8 goodness, and only £2000 as well. And everything works. And believe me, it has everything. Even a slightly flat battery, which is why the bonnet is ajar as I charge it.

Some of the new diesels are sick, they don't drive brilliantly but for plodding around in they give incredible mileage as long as you aren't heavy footed.

The thing about old diesels is that you can generally fix them quite easily.

God help those who buy a second-hand diesel that was built today, in a few years time. New injectors sir? Certainly, and they have to be programmed for the car. That'll be £1,000 please. Oh, and did we mention the DPF needs changing?

Yep, he's absolutely spot on where he should be.
£10 / 138.9p = 7.2l
100/7.2 = 13.888m
13.888*4.546= 63mpg give or take.

That's what I get in the same car most of the time. If I'm heavy foot or going at the speed limit, it'll be about 55mpg. If I'm cruising along at 57mph with steady foot it goes up to 65mpg.

DPF... yeah, there's a scam for the unwary owner of a new car.
And you just wait till new cars come with the extra tank for AdBlue (pig piss) to clean up diesel exhaust even more.

It's that cheap for a reason mate :/

And fuel consumption isn't it.

You're gonna loath it in half a year and almost pay money to get rid of it... :)

In fact you will probably have to... :p

What, 32mpg at 70mph? And no depreciation?

Some of us don't care about fuel bills.

I'd never have thought those had a V8 engine in, they're always being driven slowly by some elderly person - they're actually quite powerful!

Jeez I wasn't aware of that, will bare it in mind when I get another car later in the year.

Company fuel card or able to claim expenses? If so you picked a real nice car, proper comfort that is.

No I'm self-employed. All my fuel goes through my business, and I reclaim VAT on business miles, which is 90% of my driving.

I've got a MK6 Golf GT TDI 140 for a few months, I see what it's like on fuel and report back. Most of the dudes get around 55 mpg from it.

I'm getting it converted to LPG asap. 30mpg is all well and good but 45mpg equivalent is much better. The conversion would pay itself back within two years.

I looked at LPG but its miles from here to the nearest LPG selling garage and its going to cost you if anything goes wrong with it since most mechanics know nowt about it.

Its good for people like salesmen who spend a lot of time on the motorways since theres lots of LPG at service stations and they drive far enough that the LPG has time to warm up and start functioning - for short trips from cold it will barely touch the LPG and instead will run off diesel/petrol.

No rynnor, the LPG system I looked at today turns on after about 5 minutes (once the coolant is up to temperature). £0.69 a litre, about 20% less efficient than petrol. So call it £0.80 a litre. That's over 50p a litre cheaper than petrol.

Its an absolute no-brainer. £1650+VAT (which I don't pay) to get it converted, and I'll see that money back in just over a year.

Oh and Wazzerphuk, try doing my job where you might drive 500 miles in a day, then see how much "character" you want...

I like it Tom, looks like something Sulu would drive ;).

Well first outings in the Golf have been rather positive.

ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting

70 mpg (well, according to the trip computer anyway) returned from about 80% motorway driving, doing around 50mph to 60mph constant with very little breaking (reasonably busy motorway) with small bits of urban driving at each end.

ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting

50 mpg on the return trip, probably about 75% motorway and 25% stop / start urban driving. Also got up to a steady 80 mph on the motorway, with a small blast into three figures to see how it fared at high speed (quiet, composed and far too easy to cruise at that speed).

Pretty happy with that so far.

I got 160 miles out of my last fill; £25 for premium unleaded, just over half a tank. Think it was £1.39 a litre. In a 08 1.2l fiesta. No motorway driving on my work route though, I do about 30 miles a day and get around 38mpg according to the trip computer.

Tom; what company did you use for your LPG conversion, what was the system you had installed called?

as my polo is poorly, I am considering trading it in for a 2ndhand Audi A4 2.4i V6 automatic on petrol. According to most internet sources, the mileage will be between 1:7 and 1:11 in km. it has 135k on the clock, is from 09-2003 and they are asking 10.9 grand. choices, choices.
