<DKuntz> is it bad for me to have a pet peeve about people usin "r" instead of "are" and "u" instead of "you" (and so on)
<Lath> Er, no
<DKuntz> I really hate when people do "how r u 2day?"
<IJ> I've heard of data compression, but this is ridiculous

I don't mind that so much, but what really pisses me off is when people ask a question without using a question mark.

What really annoys me is this attitude that language is like some sort of crumbling 19th century building that needs to be constantly shored up.

Languages evolve, that's what they do and that's part of the beauty of them.

Do you get annoyed when people say "begs the question" when they mean "asks the question"? No? Well, you should, as it's a mis-use of the original meaning (something along the line of an argument relying on the truth of its own premise).

I feel that the examples you cite, along with the emergence of txt speak in mobile phone messaging, show that our language is alive and kicking.

ok?

I agree, but the main thing at the moment is people using txt speak in the wrong situations as it were. A girl failed an exam due to writing a whole essay in the abbriviated speech. The language has evolved to be used in some places but there are some instances where good old English should be used without question :)

If she was stupid enough to do that you have to wonder if she'd have passed the exam even if she had used proper english :eek7:

I think you are all missing the point and need to look at the person and his motivation for his pet hate.

Now after looking. See anything? :wij:

True. While I don't have a problem with people using txt speak on occasion, they do get on my nerves when they utter something I have to decipher 30 seconds before I got a clue what the hell they are talking about. Call me old, but proper language makes communication so much easier. IMHO ( see I even use some of them abbreviations) it is even a form of respect to at least try to form a well constructed sentence when talking to strangers. How you talk to your friends is up to you, but I appreciate fully written out words instead of ‘w8 m8 rez plz‘ (or some other greatly abused variation of what once was a proper language).
English is not my native tongue either , and I don’t care if the grammar / construction isn’t all what it should be, but at least give it a decent try.
It is frightening that thousands years of evolution, and mastering the art of communication gets stomped into the ground by people who only seem to be able to use words that are not longer then 3-4 characters.

Proper english IMO: (1)

"Whilom, as olde stories tellen us,
Ther was a duc that highte theseus;
Of atthenes he was lord and governour,
And in his tyme swich a conquerour,
That gretter was ther noon under the sonne.
Ful many a riche contree hadde he wonne;
What with his wysdom and his chivalrie,
He conquered al the regne of femenye,
That whilom was ycleped scithia,
And weddede the queene ypolita,
And broghte hire hoom with hym in his contree
With muchel glorie and greet solempnytee,
And eek hir yonge suster emelye.
And thus with victorie and with melodye
Lete I this noble duc to atthenes ryde,
And al his hoost in armes hym bisyde.
And certes, if it nere to long to heere,
I wolde have toold yow fully the manere
How wonnen was the regne of femenye
By theseus and by his chivalrye;
And of the grete bataille for the nones
Bitwixen atthenes and amazones;"

Geoffrey Chaucer - the Knights Tale

1- Note to roleplayers in alb, you really should learn middle english properly ;)

<HellmasteR> another rather amusing thing is that lol in h4x0r is 101, and 101 in binary is 5
<HellmasteR> so when i say FIVE from now on i mean lol

oh and for the discussion, I don´t really mind evolution of the language, what I do mind is people that are unable to NOT do it... some people don´t even know how to spell please, they only know pls, and THAT is bad.

Cant speak for anyone else but occasionally, when stuck to someone and running , or when using numlock to run without holding down the key, I have asked a question and not used a question mark. Only because the use of shift slows me so i loose stick follow speed etc, i try to word it in such a way as to sound like a question if that makes sense.

Same with anything else in the sentence that needs a shift on the keyboard. :)

What annoys me are Americans using phrases totally incorrectly thinking they are using them right.

THE absolute worst has to be:

"...I could care less......if you blah blah blah"

Do they even read the bloody line they write? What they mean to say is something is of so little significance to thme that they really could NOT care any less about it, but in fact what they end up saying is that it holds significance and they actually do care.

Bloody dumb Americans.

Oh and one last thing, when you are asking for a favour to someone you don't necessarily know, ending with "plz" will generally not come across as polite as "please".

"plz" has come to be taken as a demanding way of askign for something:

eg "Gold plz", "OMG plz", "stfu & dirl plz" etc etc

...

I don't find it annoying. Saying "thats" instead of "that's" is just as bad. I was pointing out the irony of the crappy use of English in the first quote.

I don't know why I bother. :D

Though i am very known for spelling even the slightest things fully, such as "in my honest opinion", i do understand why in games people use things like:

plz
u
r
w8

And so on. It is only because this language is developed for highpaced action games like Quake, Counterstrike and in some volume to be used in Massive roleplaying games as well. It's a time issue, when you have an apache helicopter, three squads of marines or just one freaking big dragon on your ass you are more inclined to use short and fast messages then to write:

"Oh excuse me my fellow guildmates, would you be so kind as to assist me with this aarargh!!"

No, don't tell me, I know this one...

That's 1337 for being a bachelor of liberal arts, and boating law adminstrator of the black liberation army, right? Or did you mean blah blah blah? :p

True. Back in the days of Unreal, we used to whack "lo m8" in quickly for people entering the game, "shot" meaning "good shot" and "q" was "thankyou". For games like DAoC, there doesn't always seem a need for it tho.

There is a time and place for all kind of specialised language which I guess that girl found out. Using it outside hectic gamesitautions is to start off with a big upwards slope when talking to strangers as you actually would appear as someone that didnt pass writing classes in school. Not the best first impression you can give of yourself. It is a sign of disrespect to start talking to them without adapting your langauge to the one you talk to. And if you treat people with disrespect dont expect the red carpet treatment in return.

Spelling police...heh internet shorthand isnt even proper language, just a kind of phonetic shorthand, nothing more. Calling it an evolution of the English language is to push it a bit I would say. More like internet shorthand for cave man grunts :)

Silly thread in my opinion. So often in game you either say it quick or you can keep quiet, becouse if you try and lay out out word the moment is gone and you comment is old. It's all about timing.
If you are about to type "thank you very much mate" and hit enter the one you try talk to have left and do not se it. But if you fast type "ty" you at least he see it and you tryed to be polite. But then some people are never happy and always have to see things from the bad side.
