Just don't shop there again, and make it known to the owner/manager exactly why you refuse to spend money there now.

Many years ago, a friend *cough* of mine was buying a prOn mag and was served by a young lad, as he wasn't 18, he had to call a supervisor to OK the sale, in the same way they do in Tesco if your buying booze and the checkout person is under age.

He held up the mag and shouted across the store to the manager to get the all clear, just as a queue of 3/4 people suddenly appeared behind me....i mean him (bugger!!)

Looking more into the national ID i do like the idea of being able to travel around Europe with just that and no need for a passport. So if you are like me and mostly travel around Europe, paying £30 instead of £77.50 is a good idea
Dunno what the rules are in Europe today about ID's, but its supposed to be if you got the European ID you can travel freally across Europe.

I dont mind if clubs ask for ID. They usually have policies where it's "no ID, no entrance" so everyone brings ID. If you've forgot it and you're with friends, they let you in if they think you're old enough.

Shops are a pain, especially with new employees and supermarkets. I was 26 at the time and i said to the checkout person
Me: I'm 26. How old are you out of interest?
Checkout n00b: 18
Me: So you think I look younger than you? (I had a man beard at the time).

He realised he was being a bit of a twit, but his boss was behind him so he said he's gonna have to ask.

My only form of ID is a passport so its a pain to put in your pocket as you dont want to lose/damage it.

Yep yep. Any EU ID card allows you to travel across EU w/o anything else required (rent cars, book hotels, etc..)

Iiirc same goes for the countries of the Schengen treaty (Iceland, Switzerland, etc..). Am I right?

Small and functional, brits should rly consider to use them

i have my driving license in my wallet at all times, i dont see why anyone wouldn't, it's not exactly heavy is it

This

I always carry my ID too, apart from the fact I look young, should I get mangled in some horrible accident I will have ID on me should I not be able to speak etc. I see no reason to not carry it, its just one extra card.

Also its worth pointing out that if you sell to someone who is underage you can get a criminal record. Happened to a guy I used to work with, they sent in a 15 year old mystery shopper and he did not ID em for booze or fags or whatever it was. He got a stupidly big fine and a criminal record....and i'm assuming he was fired cos I never saw him again after that.

Its not worth the risk.

Faf I have ID but according to their made up rules (that was actually for a drinks campaign) it's not 'the right sort' lol

student card isnt really concrete id though, and wont be within their due diligence systems.

if you want to get your own back, go and see if they have the A3 tobacco poster. if not, report them.

You should be chuffed you clearly look wonderously young :)

I'm 30 and the little buggers at school always say "Yeah right, add ten years sir."

That said, student ID (as long as it's quality ID, we used to have holographic ones at Uni) should really be accepted. Problem is no quality assurance system there - some Uni's still have shite ID that is easy to fake so you can see why they don't.

I always carry my licence anyway. I think the UK still do the Citizencard, the latter version of the Prove-it! card. I think that's a good idea because when I was younger people used to take out their passports and getting shitfaced with your passport on you is never a good idea tbh.

I'm no person who cares about 'Big Brother' in that a national ID card wouldn't upset me about civil liberty, but I do think it would end up being a back door to lots of dubious legal amendments that seemed a good idea at the time but might be an erosion of those liberties. Mainly because they want to make these cards like a chip-and-pin effect. Why? There's no need for that. That's what a government database is about.

That's the real issue - why isn't the central government database actually centralised?? As a teacher, when I move counties I have to get a separate CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check for EACH and EVERY county I might teach in. Why?? If I have been charged and found guilty of a crime, surely it's on thie system? It's not like we have a clear state/federal criminology system like the US? It should all be there.

I just don't agree with giving power to central government. I agree with giving it to agencies such as the Police etc. but seriously, giving it to muppets who change their minds every 4 to 5 years and new people end up in the job (aka. Ministers). Fuck that.

I'd love to be asked for ID :(

At least people don't give up their seats to me on public transport (time to take yourself over to a Futurama-style Execution Booth when that happens)

lol it wasn't flattering at all tbh, the woman didn't ask it in a ncie way and to be made out to be a liar and made a public spectical of in your local shop is really really embarrassing and tbh on the way home i alternated between fuming and crying. I haven't beed ID'd since I was in australia about 5 years ago and went shooting, was 25 then (and the bermuda shorts prolly made me look younger...and sillier).

As i said, I don't drive and shop there regularly so the whole thing about carrying ID is a moot point when you get to be an old fucker you really don't think of carrying ID, Tris, I did look and they didn't have anything about tobacco and age on display in the shop.

Anyway, humilliation passing now but t'aint nice and having shop workers being so flaming rude and public about it really made me sick...though the fact I am doing a marketing & customer service module right now really helped when I penned the complaint letter lol

I thought the ID cards so many people in the UK were against were some new form of ID, the one we got around the EU is just what you lot need and i'm surprised as hell that you don't have it.

Just like a drivers lisence, given to everyone, with or without chip(for info purposes) and you've got valid ID to any occasion.

Shouldn't be anything against it really :eek7:

I wouldnt reccomend traveling without a passport to be honest. Me and a friend went to mediamarkt when we were in barcelona to buy some cheap hair trimmer and wasnt allowed to pay with Visa card without showing a passport We had a european drivers license but was still denied purchase.
Every other store was fine with just a drivers license as id and most places didnt ask for it either.
They lost a customer and my friend had to look like a hairy beast for a few days :)

Well, as u said, it was a driver license not an ID, i might (MIGHT) guess why the shop was a little pesky about it.

But Ive been travelling across EU with Visa/Amex and just my ID (no passport) and got no problems with any payment (hotels, restaurants, shops,...) and Im such a plastic card addict (never carry more than 20€ in cash in my wallet).

I think people mix up a few things to be honest. Having a ID card as we do here in Sweden ( and I guess most other places ) is just fucking convenient!

Reading this thread has spurred me on to finally sort out my photo driving license.

I've never been prevented from doing anything due to lack of ID. I've been asked a couple of times, never on my own but with friends who I guess might look youthful. I just shrug and say "I'm 30 mate, what would I need to carry ID for?" and they let me in.
Never been asked for booze since I was about 15/16.

Well, own fault really.

No ID, no service :D

/slap :p

Ez, it still happens to me and I am nearly 40 and look it.

I usually have two tactics. One is to tell them I feel flattered, tell them my age and then they usually fade away like a shrinking violet - then ask (if it's a female) if she's trying to give me a one line chat up ^^ just to rub it in :p Second is point to the fake zimmer frame and it usually results with the end of one. :)

No matter who you are and how long you've shopped somewhere, no matter even if you look like an aold crow, you are obliged to show valid ID when asked.

Photo ID is a must.

If you've ever bought cigarettes or alcohol(which are the same thing), you would know that it's the case.

ID carrying is as regular as carrying your wallet(which is where it is about 100% of the time for me), so it's not like it's asking alot.

i never carry ID even when i go to clubs ect never needed it even since i was 17 xD and this whole look 25 thing is retarded get them like i need id cos u don't look 25, right... thats cos im 23??? still 5 years older than 18 u stupid little pricks

Like i said; you not needing to show it, doesn't make it less required.

Write in and complain, the more detail the better so they can identify the pillock responsible. As a thirty year old you shouldn't be expected to carry ID with you, and whoever suggested otherwise is a prize dick.

Expectations, what is right and all other stuff like that are meaningless. If shops have the right to ask for a legal ID for purchases, they can enforce it and whining about it does nothing.

Maybe this was 1 out of 10 for EQs "lifetime ID checks", maybe not.

You need an ID for so many things these days, that the UK should just put out legal IDs to people that they can carry with them, no more problems and "check him 'cause he looks 22" situations.

As it is though, it's your responsibility to prove your age.

Two things there. In the UK many of us, myself included, do not agree with the idea of ID cards. They are a draconian measure implemented by governments that do not seek to be of the people and for the people, but to control the people.

They are based entirely on the concept that the populace cannot be trusted and it flies in the face of centuries of legal tradition and practice. I'm not the only one that would fight the introduction of an ID card, and not entirely on the basis that they simply don't work either.

Spain has had an ID card for decades yet has been systematically bombed by basque separatists and other terrorist groups in the same period.

Similar experiences by other shoppers in the UK are here: Prove your age to buy cheddar in barmy shop rules | The Sun |News The problem is not with the regulations about age, but with jobsworth employees. I am sure the employer would feel quite differently to the issue and the employees removed from their positions or warned not to be so darn stupid.
