So I go off to my local shop last night, where I have been going for years btw, to buy some tobacco and I get ID'd ... "are you serious, I'm 30" I reply to which my attention is directed to a poster for 'drink aware' saying you must have passport, drivers license or other holographic ID...my student union card, although it has a photo of me and my DOB is not valid...(I point out that the poster is for alcohol but no dice) "But I'm 30! why the hell would I be carrying ID to buy tobacco from this shop when I've been buying it from here for years??" I ask, in short I was told tough.

very rude obnoxious staff result in me going home very upset, I mean how frigging humilliating to be told you cannot purchase something you have been buying for years, to have it implied that I was actually lying about my age (tbh would you say you were 30 if you were going to lie? I'd say like 25 or something) and then they refused to serve B2 because he was with me and 'I might smoke some of his tobacco'. B2 said it might be seen as being flattering but as a grown woman I found it so frigging embarrassing, and you know me I don't get embarrassed tbh.

What a gip!

*fume*

[edit] btw Somerfield are terrible and I shan't be shopping there again!

Sounds like a jobs worth type arse hat. I remember trying to buy a lottery ticket from a kid who was in the year below me in school i had a good rant about that. Unfortunately for you it just sounds like the person you were dealing with was a mini Hitler abusing any tiny bit of power they could.

lol thats exactly what we both said on the way home! The clerk and supervisor both had that air about them of really making the most of what stick they were allowed to wield.

I mean tbh I do look a bit younger than I am but not that sodding young lol and I am buggered if I am going to carry ID round with me at my age, it's just plain daft!

Faf I have ID but according to their made up rules (that was actually for a drinks campaign) it's not 'the right sort' lol

No matter who you are and how long you've shopped somewhere, no matter even if you look like an aold crow, you are obliged to show valid ID when asked.

Photo ID is a must.

If you've ever bought cigarettes or alcohol(which are the same thing), you would know that it's the case.

ID carrying is as regular as carrying your wallet(which is where it is about 100% of the time for me), so it's not like it's asking alot.

Thats not the case here i drink regularly and i have been asked for ID about 10 times in my life. They have a campaign here saying they have to ask for ID if you look younger than 21 and some pubs the till requests a ID check at random transactions.

There is no way every pack of fags purchased should be asked to produce photographic ID especially when we do not force people to own let alone carry such ID

She did show them ID, her NUS (National Union of Students) card but it wasn't on the list.

A lot of jobsworths in retail unfortunately.

But she did have some photo ID, just not one of the small list of cards that they will 'accept'.

I have never understood why things such as student ID can't be used, they only ever seem to accept passport/driving license.

Well no matter if what when, if the employee didn't go by the book, it could be his7her job on the line. They even, in finland, have people doing random checks so that people check IDs. If the shop doesn't, they're in big trouble.

The law states that a student id isn't enough(here), so that's not valid.

You may think it's all about acting like a cock and being a minihitler, but you have to take a look at it from the shops perspective.

Also, not getting an ID check doesn't mean they can't.

I've seen this plenty of times, people flipping out because they can't get into a bar with a student ID and the bouncer(friend) says it's a real pain as they have to check even with a SLIGHT chance of someone being underaged and that if they didn't do their job, well, they'd be out of one.

Carrying an ID doesn't actually take effort.

Last time I was asked for ID I was 15 trying to get a #child# fare. Shouldn't complain though 'cause I'd been buying stuff in pubs from the age of 14.

There's no legal obligation to carry ID in the UK (yet) and if anyone ever asked me for ID for smokes or booze I think I'd laugh in their face & go to the next shop. IIRC the #valid# ID changes from shop to shop as well (though passport/drivers license are standard). Should you carry an assortment of ID to prove it? What happens if you don't drive? Why on earth would you carry a passport to buy cigarettes (unless you're popping to the continent to get some duty free ofc)?

They are obligied to not sell to people below the age limit but as that's 16 for cigarettes then they were blatantly taking the p**s (though I'm sure you look not a day over 19 ;) ).

Do like in sweden, we got a Photo ID with holographic image and stuff on it. Works the same as a drivers license / passport as an ID. It has a EAN-code aswell nowdays so they can swipe it if you dont remember you credit/debit card code.

No because people in England seem to think this will mean the end of all civil liberty and turn us into a police state where all your movement is monitored ect. so no Paranoid England and her population have no national ID.

Thats just stupid. National ID is a good invention. the size of a cc/drivers license. Works as ID all over EU. Was stopped by La Guardia Civil this summer they checked my ID and sent me on my way. Checked my sister in laws passport, took them about 30 min to check it out so it was not fake :)

Im on your side they first time i got stopped after passing my drivers test it took them 40 minutes to sort it out as i had the same name and address as my Father. The useless bint at the DVLA could not see there were two Michaels at that address. National ID card with biometrics ect would have made that a bit easier.

I'm sorry Ez but you really can not take any precautions in re: to serving underage people.

Somerfield operate a strict under-25 = id'ed policy and undergo a lot of age-related training and constant checks to make sure people are applying the rule properly.

We are in a climate now where age is not easily correlated with looks, attitude etc and if I was the person serving you and I had any indication you were under 25, I would ID you to be on the safe side.

Also FYI: most supermarket chains operate a think-25 policy, simply because think-21 wasn't safe enough and some areas are getting very trigger-happy with getting rid of licenses or suspending licenses for a set duration.

The Somerfield recording thing you hear in stores really sums it up: "If you're lucky enough to look under 25, please don't be offended if we ask you for proof of age."

(Source: ex-employee ;))

Also, toht is right. If you don't carry ID about with you at most/all times, you really should think about doing so.

Yeah! Dont deny it :p

Its like the other day, when some dude in the pub kindly asked me to "sir, could you move a bit further from the pool table pls? " and obviously I was like "wtf?! don't frigging call me sir, damned retard"

Looking more into the national ID i do like the idea of being able to travel around Europe with just that and no need for a passport. So if you are like me and mostly travel around Europe, paying £30 instead of £77.50 is a good idea

Yeah Ez spend x hundred pounds on driving lessons to get a photographic drivers licence you lazy oink! :)

Thats why we need some generic ID why ruin your passport or pay for a drivers licence if you dont drive. A photo ID at 16 would be ideal then you make it a necessity at clubs ect and use them for capacity info ect.

Provisional license won't be accepted at loads of places. I got held up in sainsburys because the girl in front only had a provisional, trying to buy alcohol. They wouldn't take it. I've seen it turned down at loads of places.

On topic: When the legal age for cigs was 16 and I was 23, I was asked for ID (buying cigars for a mate, I don't smoke that shit). I had my driver's license, but it took a while for me to bother getting it out because I was just dumbfounded. I asked her if she seriously thought I could be 15 years old =/ had a full face of hair too as I hadn't shaven for a week.
