I usually tend to be "ok" up until Christmas, then I have lost total interest in tampering with the team Might be more interesting if I am closer to the top.
My bias for Liverpool players make it hard to be close to the top tho!

swap a defender sub with a midfield sub or attacker sub (at least thats how it used to work!)

You can't. Midfielders are always midfielders. All you can do is take off a defender and sub in a midfielder or attacker to change formation. There are limits through such as minimum 3 defenders. Most of the time you will want either 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 as clean sheets are the main source of points for defenders and they were in very short supply last season. Hence a lot of people will probably buy 2 decent defenders to play most of the time and 3 cheap ones to swap around depending on fixtures.
