So I just found out some of the music I've been listening to recently is actually Emo :eek7: !

Like, AFI - Silver and Cold
Fall out boy - Sugar, Were going down
Anberlin - The feel good drag

These are all pretty cool songs...

That make me emo? :(

no, Emo Rock is very good music, a lot of people listen to Emo but are not Emo's, most Emo's dont actually listen to the "Emo" music.

"Fall out boy - Sugar, Were going down" <-- Doesn't make you cry, and I wouldn't call that emo. I'd call it 'Piss-Take' rock.

I hate stereotyping. I think it shows an incredible array of ignorance.

Music isn't split into the genres you're led to believe on TV/the radio. It is wide-ranging and diverse.

"Emo" music, whos name originates from emotional rock in the late 80s and is often a term that is used as an insult these days. The emo focus then switched to more indie music. After the 90s, new bands emerged more diverse than before, leaving the emo term a vague identifier and not a genre of music as such.

It's lost its meaning, and is now used generally to describe rock music with an emotional context. ie music about losing out in love, pain and suffering, suicide etc. The term is, however, irrelevant as the span of bands it encapsulates in society is a contradiction to its meaning. Bands playing upbeat "happy" music are now considered 'emo' as well. Bands that are placed under this heading are, as mentioned above, utterly different in musical style, make-up and audience, ranging from hardcore metal, shouting, all the way to modern day emotional rock and indie.

Just because someone listens to a band that the majority class under the 'emo' heading isn't derogatory of the listener. Personally, I have an incredibly eclectic musical taste, ranging from romantic symphonies to hardcore metal.

Be open minded; the term doesn't mean much these days.

It's impossible to say "emo is terrible", simply because it's not a definition of a genre any more. Over 50% of modern bands could be called "emo".

Yellowcard is completely different to Funeral for a Friend, for example. It's very narrow minded to say "emo is rubbish" unless you define what emo means to you.

Feel free to say "AFI are rubbish" or "Avenged Sevenfold are rubbish", as that is your opinion on something specific. Saying "emo is rubbish" means nothing.

Stereotypically, people that go to a Coheed and Cambria gig wear completely different clothes to a Thrice gig (ironically, both played together in London recently). The tight jeans thing is more related to bands such as Panic! At the Disco or Dashboard Confessional.

i wouldnt say its narrowminded to say its terrible....cos ive given it a listen.....stuff like fall out boy an the likes.....an MCR....an tbh....it does my head in....an 50% of modern bands?? where u get that from?? u must be talkin like mainstream stuff......cos i could name a rather large list of bands that are far from emo....as far as guitars/drums sorta music goes.....imo....metal is king!! much more technical an diverse than most other genres tbh....keeps me on my toes...where as emo just makes me wanna strangle some1 out of pure boredom...an my definition of emo....well....ok....would be somethin like this: punk-ish sort of element due to most of it bein rather damn simplistic and a vocalist (if u wanna call it that) that tends to whine....about the usual old crap...i.e ex gf's,how life is so hard an just about anythin else thats related to feeling sorry for yaself....

How are these bands 'emo' in a traditional sense? They are completely different to each other. Fallout boy isn't "whiney" music, it's upbeat happy soft rock...just look at their videos. MCR mixes a unique style with a comedy aspect. The two bands you mention have almost nothing in common at all.

They are also both associated with younger listeners. Fallout Boy is a band often classed as 'emo' but plays to a wider audience - very much bridging the gap between 'alternative' music and chart.

Perhaps you are very specific in your musical taste, making all other bands look boring/pointless.

For the record, I don't like Fallout boy's music. It has no depth or talent for me. MCR have done a few good tracks, but they overdo their self-created image.

well it certainly is a contender for the 'misheard lyrics' thing they have had going on in the metro lately.
