I now have my Anaconda almost fully kitted out (just need that Class 8 plasma) and more money than I should ever need. I guess I technically don't need to do piracy, I just want to blow stuff up now :p

Ah, well... In that case a conda will probably be perfect :)

(Though i still rate the viper as a better "combat" ship than the conda... being able to dictate the engagement range is such an advantage.)

Got the plasma accelerator but is seems to do nothing. Either its a bug or I'm using it wrong. With this Beta it's hard to tell which. :)

However I'm loving my 3 x Class 6 cannons. It only takes 3 volleys to obliterate a Cobra with full shields!

cheers. I'm already dicking about with controls. I'm on kbd/mouse and I'm getting my head around why that the first few missions in the sidewinder have the ship *really* wanting to roll, whereas pitch/yaw are slow as fuck. I can get your directional X and Y changes being slow(ish), but I would expect pitch/yaw to be near equal to roll in speed. I read on the internets that pitch > yaw speed because "the human body can handle pitch G forces (eg vertical) better than yaw forces (horizontal), but that doesn't tell me why they're both slow as fuck.

The whole flight model is based on pitch and roll with a very slow yaw. Look out for your speed - in the blue zone it is most responsive in handling. You should be able to pitch fairly fast in the blue zone though... play around with the settings for mouse dead zone and sensitivity as much as needed. Don't get too hung up on the SP missions - they can be hard - get used to the basics then get online in MP!

Get a HOTAS Joystick off Ebay - worth it. Makes it so much easier, I struggled with KB Mouse controls.

I'm Duck. I'll add you all tonight.

Loving this game. I picked up a Saitek X52 flight stick and it makes it a lot easier. I spent all yesterday playing, first getting the hang of everything and then pootling about in a Hauler trying to earn enough money for a decent ship. My eyes got tired playing using the Rift so I switched to my monitor for a bit. It felt really weird piloting a ship while not sitting in the cockpit!

@TdC Try using your thrusters as you turn. It can be hard to tell but they definitely make a difference.

I'm Marricus.

@TdC also keep the speed in middle of blue zone for tighter turns. Much easier to control with the X52 throttle :)

Or if you're KB/M like me just bind a key to 50% throttle and that will always gives you the best turn speed. Also use the power adjustment to lower the the amount to engines so your max speed is lower and hence you turn arc is smaller, useful for targeting those nimble ships that try to get on your ass :)

yeah, yeah I know I know! :D

I tried to add you guys yesterday evening but there is no feedback ingame so I have no idea if it worked or not. Also, the game couldn't find you, Hawkwind (but could find Jupitus and Urgat) with the names given here. Anyway, even without killing that barstand 13th Axeman yet -GRRR- I have some skills it seems. Played online and got some kills in against NPC's, and also a couple deaths (one from accidentally colliding with my mission quarry, derp!).

Strange thing happened on a trade run: I got interdicted, and the NPC started to threaten me, so I took matters in to my own hands and killed him. Bam! I get stung with a wanted status and a fine! Ok, I think to myself, I did start shooting before the NPC went hostile so maybe I brought this on myself. Then another NPC jumps in, goes hostile and starts shooting at me. I take him out, and get ANOTHER fine, making me fairly wanted in the system. To my surprise, after SCing to the station with no further incidents, it lets me in and I can clear my wanted status with monies fair come by.

Re: flying tips. I have some things shuffeled about now and flying is easier. Main thing is that I have the mouse to be pitch/yaw, with roll replacing yaw on the kbd. Other main thing is that I have mouse sensitivity waaaay down and the dead-zone fairly big, about two-thirds of the slider big. I need that so I can track effectively because otherwise the crosshair will "bounce" as I move the mouse while adjusting pitch speeds and I won't hit shit brah.

Re: turning with thrusters. I do that chum, and works noticiably better then without imo. I also use them to dodge, and that doesnt work as well because of the "spin-up time" they have as they have to work at it to get the ship moving. A brief tap isnt enough to get you out of someone's line of fire...you have to lean on that button and keep leaning for the effect to kick in. This bugs me, as I am coming out of playing Hawken online and the dodge there is instant with a cooldown rather than the reverse in Elite.

Anyway, I played online now and made some cash. Repaired some ship damage, rinse, repeat. Still messing about really. One thing I noticed is that I *really* didnt want to hit the station or mess up my landings with real people watching :)

Yes, it's annoying, but it makes some sort of sense. Think of such NPCs as having just cleared their bounties/fines, or only just starting on a life of crime, and currently threatening another pilot isn't a crime. You really do have to wait for them to shoot and hit you so that they get Wanted status. This might change in the future, as players at least are meant to get a specific "I want your cargo" canned message to use to declare piracy so that the 'pirate' factions don't get pissed off with you (and thus you have someplace with good enough reputation to land for repairs and restocking).

Likely that PC was a 'System Authority' vessel that, game-wise, had actually been sent in to assist you/the other NPC. It saw the Wanted on you and attacked to enforce the local law. At the station you likely got lucky with not getting scanned by a ship. The station itself won't scan you, but be warned that if a 'System Authority' ship scans you and finds the bounty whilst you're close enough to the station the station will open up on you and you will be dead rather quickly.

Eh, if you do that well at combat then docking and landing is easy. Certainly you can't do any worse that the stupid AI/Docking Computer does.

hehe yeah chum that is so. thing is, it was 3 in the morning and I had been playing for 5 hours so pretty tired. playing while tired is just something I should not do, ever :) I mean when I am fresh I can take out ships, perform complex maneuvers, dock etc, with no problem at all (except that ^%*&$*&%$ 13th Axeman, my nemisis  )

also, re the two fines and wanted status...nah Ath, twas both pirate scumbags, but...I didn't let them hit me first so maybe that was the thing?

Somehow my commander name got reset back to commander backer. In case it happens to any of you guys, the change is easy, details here:

It is back as Marricus again now.

Yes, as I said you need to let them hit you for them to gain Wanted status such that you're free to retaliate without instead becoming Wanted yourself. I even had to let one NPC have a free second pass at me because it missed on its first attempt.

Got my L9 yesterday, don't like it at all, feels like I'm flying a supertanker. LOL at the docking computers efforts on landing it. 3 out 4 times this morning it it got wedged against the side of the docking area! I had to take over and manually land it :) Still few more runs and I can get the Anaconda .

The devs have said that is a bug that needs fixing. As soon as they fire they will get wanted status even if they miss. They may also do the same for just a threat. It's beta afterall and they are still tweaking these kind of game mechanics.

Got my TrackIR setup now but need to figure out how to setup an On/Off look around mode on a spare joystick switch. Is it just switching the mouse middle key to a spare slot in the options?

yeah I thought as much tbh re the shooting/wanted thing. on the bright side I made Mr 13th Axeman meet his maker several times yesterday evening, only to get pasted by the lovely Cobra that comes after him. Oh, I get shots off at...Radient Dawn (lol!) for sure, but it's guns are so OP that it's hard to avoid once it gets you in its sights. I'll muddle through somehow :)

Mine crashes sometimes going in or out of SC but nowhere near that much. I'd say 1/30 or so.
