I'm kinda hoping she'll make Rees-Mogg minister for welfare or something.

We're truly fucked (but PMQs will be a laugh).

Trouble is, I have zero confidence in Starmer. He is least shit, that is about all I can say for him. The shadow cabinet is *fine*, but nothing spectacular. UK politics is on its arse.

I heard he's getting environment.

Being a climate change denier and all that, perfectly suited.

I'm sorry - yes Starmer is shit but it's a false equivalence. It's been a long long time since the Tories have had anyone even remotely competent - a random off the street has a better than 50/50 chance of being a better PM than Truss. An ex director of public prosecutions who had a real job before politics has to be better placed.

Yes, but he is just bland, I know that doesn't matter, but his policies are bland too, it's all just meh. I quite like Chris Bryant myself.

I'd take bland, boring, plain over what we've had and now got. It's a pretty serious job I don't want a fucking clown.

I think he is fine, certainly an upgrade over the shower of shit on the Tory side.

The problem will ultimately be can the Labour party avoid blowing itself up in the next couple of years, past history doesn't look good on this aspect.

They still looked better than Johnson tbh. It was so obvious that he was a conman.

Quiet ineptitude > obvious con artist.

The problem being they rarely do quiet ineptitude.
Not buying it - they never had a real chance to demonstrate their ineptitude. By the last election the Tories had had a decade to show their true colours - and a fucked NHS, stagnant economy, rocketing inequality and (unbelieveably) shockingly - the first-time reversal of lifespan - yet the Tory voters still voted them in. Turkeys continuing to vote for Christmas.

And the narrative was (and still is) to lay the blame at labour - rather than at their own feet.

Would this effect people on pay as you go or what ever it's called though? Because if it doesn't, its completely ignoring the people that actually need help.
I would hope they'll (the government) be informed by the energy companies who is on what meter. But freezing the cap will work either way as long as they are on smart meters (which most will be).

Yeah but I'm on about people that are in debt and already pay an extra pay back premium, a cap for them is going to be higher than everyone else.

They shouldn't get any kudos for this - we've the worst insulated housing stock in western europe - we've known we need to insulate for years and now we're spending billions of taxpayers money (because we'll have to pay via taxes) to energy companies.

Tory voters (looking at you @Embattle) are 100% to blame for this because they've been resistant to taxpayer dollar being spent on home insulation - but we're spunking it anyway on energy bills - which goes to energy companies and shareholders (which is clearly the Tory way).

If you have voted Tory previously you really are a selfish, quite gormless cunt as far as the wellbeing of the country goes. Emb, did you really?

I'm all for those who need help with it getting insulation but under no circumstances should it go to those who can easily afford it....as said many times before and no doubt again in the future.

Yes I did after Tony Blair it has been all Tory, like many others hence why they've been in government. In the end you vote for what is put in front of you, Labour have ultimately put forward a more unpalatable choice each election.

But the Tories have lied about their manifesto committments in each and every one.

So Tory voters have repeatedly chosen liars - who's very palatable choices were never met (and were never intended to be) - rather than the less palatable but much more likely to be met alternatives.

That is simply crazy tbh.

Ironically that actually tells you as much about the leaders the Labour party has put forward, in much the same way Liz was more favoured by the party but she is unfavorable in the country.

Really, manifestos do they ever hold up and do people really still believe them.

I know you've been gone a while, but the majority of this forum voted Tory I think.

Actually, that's a lie according to the poll here.

Nah. I think it tells you much more about Tory voters.

I absolutely detested Labour under Corbyn and I'm no fan at all of Starmer. But the devil we know - the Tories - it's unconscionable that they remain in power. It shows that Tory voters are scared to take a punt on something different and easily cowed into their corners by bullshit - and would rather point at people who've not been given a chance in government and blame them for their voting choices.

the Spanish being unreasonable..

Well, yes actually. Items temporarily in a foreign country do not attract duty or vat. Think equipment for a specific purpose (bikes for a charity event) items moving across borders for repair, to be returned etc "But we didn't have to do it before!" quite right, now we do though, and will have to in future, so do it properly.

Sure, then everyone bringing in equipment that should have duty or vat will just say 'oh it's just temporary!'

Yes, that's what declarations do. You don't just rock up to a border with your stuff, the queues would be even worse.

Even then, there has to be the common sense people were born with, you don't pay customs on your phone, do you? Your camera equipment? Your bike if you were going on a cycling holiday?

The problem here appears to be some jobsworth in Spain has spotted a van full of bikes crossing the border. Presumably without even knowing the value.
