I got caught for "speeding" once a few years back. In luton there is a dual carriageway through the centre with big metal barrieres either side. Its always been a 40mph limit. One day i get a latter saying i was doing 40 in a 30. Apparently it had been changed to 30mph and at the same time mr speed van appeared.

Bleh slightly OT, but after driving down the M6 from Manchester this evening, I don't give a toss about speed, but lorries should be forced to stay in the left-hand lane at all times. After finally getting around one truck trying to overtake another, there was absolutely nothing infont of it, then later on, another trucking holding up virtually the entire motorway had a clear space infront of it!

That's why trucks aren't allowed in the outside lane; but to stop them going into the middle lane would cause problems for people entering the motorway when its busy, ironically, especially the people who stick to the speed limit...

not going to enter the debate on what speed is safe - it's entirely down to the driver and conditions imo (but then I don't drive hence I don't judge, my fear is when I do drive I'll turn into one of those cockbag idiot drivers...)

I agree with alot of what's said in here tho, especially the bits concerning more police on the road getting the idiots who cause accidents rather than the odd moron driving too fast and out of control.

None of you could be further from the truth.

None of you know what that 40mph road looks like. How much traffic it carries - or even what time of day I drove down it at that speed.

You're all making assumptions without knowing the full facts. For all you know, Maljonic's 30mph road might be a dual carriageway at 0100 in the morning.

The be-all and end-all of safe driving does not mean sticking to speed limits. Its a very very minor part of being a safe driver.

Just for the record, before I read this entire thread through, the road in question is one of those big wide things that looks like a 40. In fact I think it is 40 along a lot of it but I didn't see where it changed, not living there myself. It's called Hills Road in Cambridge by the way, if anyone knows it - leads out of town to the motorway, south east?

Get the photos and calibration certificate first.

If anything it'll give your mates a laugh looking at your mug in the car. If the photo's shit (which a lot of them are) then they can't do you for speeding.

Went through a similar thing earlier this year. Was snapped doing 34 in a 30 (dual carriageway part of the A52 in Nottingham, subcontracted-out speed camera van sat on the pavement behind a couple of trees).

Got the photo, challenged it, heard nothing for ages until the court summons came through (their mistake - not that they can get points and a fine for making mistakes unlike us) - with an extra 3 points possible for "failing to provide information".

Wrote them a letter saying I didn't know who was driving but I was willing to pony up to the 3 points if they dropped their "failing to provide" charge.

3 points and 60 quid later I feel a lot better that I made some miserable fucker who works for these police-replacement companies have to do some work for their cash


BTW. Brother in law's a lawyer who's had 6 speeding tickets through this year - he's only ponied up for one of them. He's not bent or a reckless driver.

There are some though which need to be there. They just put up a speed camera on the A40 where I cross the street everyday. More than 80% of people at that point accelerate to get through the lights....usually after its changed to red already! I have seen a few people just about to step out into the road to cross and they nearly get taken out by some idiotic motorist.

No I'd say the idiot in that case would be the dumb ass pedestrian who walks out into the road without looking - the fact that it was probably a pelican crossing is immaterial. It's still good practice to look before you cross just to make sure everyone stops at the red light. Iving in France for 18 months told me that.

Whether you fight the charge or not is a straight cost-benefit thing. You pay the 60 quid, take the points, go away or challenge it at a cost of time/effort and risk losing. You know how much your time is worth.

I have to agree here, lorries doing 56 overtaking lorries doing 55 is just plain ignorance and stupidity.

There is a section of the M8 motorway heading west from Edinburgh past Newbridge (near E'burgh airport) and there is a long downhill stretch followed by quite a steep incline (plus it's only two lanes which doesn't help).

So the lorries and heavily loaded vans get their speed up a bit and want to get into the outside lane, only to hit the steep incline moments later and grind to about 30 mph causing a "shockwave" of slow traffic that piles up. It's utterly infuriating. Worse still some lorries can't actually manage to overtake and have to slow down to pull back in once they realise they've been a cock.

I seem to remember signs in America banning HGV's from overtaking on certain stretches of road for the same reasons.

Exit the SPECS area in a different lane to that which you entered, and any action against you is inadmissable in court.
