What we can't have is a position where every clown with a driving license 'thinks' they are good drivers and that it is acceptable to judge for themselves at what speed they should drive.
But that's exactly what you've got. Plus it won't change until every car in the country is automated, i.e. computer driven without human interaction, as this system would simply follow the programmed rules.

Generally I don't believe that people should be allowed to question/second guess everything in the manner that you are Tom. Yes what you did caused no harm and yes nobody got hurt. In reality though you're not at risk. If you 'did' (i.e. theoretically) do that speed and accidentally killed someone, your ass wouldn't end up in the electric chair like it should, would it?

I'd be more than happy for you to have a 100mph permit if to get one you signed away your right to exist if involved in any accident and if the victims/victims relatives received your entire estate as well (i.e. your family get left with nothing). Somehow though I doubt you'd sign up for that, though I could be wrong?

I do disagree that he is "ENTITLED" to drive at 100mph down a 40mph limited road...it all depends on the road though.

On the A40 near me I know I could drive at 2am in the morning at 100mph on the 40mph stretch and the only person I would harm if I crashed is me.....

I am not saying that is what I do but you can't start yelling abuse at people for what they do without knowing the full facts.

The A40 with the 40mph limit is 3 lanes wide. Has a Solid barriar to prevent me from crashing into on coming traffic and its impossible for pedestrians to be there.....why is there a 40mph limit...I don't know. Maybe it has to do with noise pollution...But I cant see why it is. Further down the road with similar circumstances it has a 70mph limit.....go figure.

Which means there is still a danger? yes?

That is my point.

About 6 months ago a taxi driver was driving down a road at 70mph it was 3am in the morning now by all account he could have been doing 100 plus on the road because it is a straight road. He killed a 18 year old instantly when she ran onto the road after jumping a fence. It is a well lit area and he could do nothing to avoid it.

Now as far as I am concerned it was not the fault of the taxi driver, However you are never in control of every possibilty no matter how much you think you are, going faster just reduces the chance of you being able to do anything about it. So don't try and tell me this is the case because you cant.

Yes you can single out the odd tragedy here and there....But that doesnt prove anything.

The Auotbahn in Germany is proof of that. They don't have nearly as many deaths on those than the motorways in the UK.

Why is that? It cant be due to speed...

I agree with you that at high speed if you lose control you are more likely to cause a lot more damage than going slowly.

But just because you are driving fast doesnt mean you will have an accident.

Speed doesnt kill. Its the sudden stop that does....

If you follow that logic every road in the country should be a 20mph limit, just in case. The point is that that 40 mph limit is out of kilter with the norms of the country because in relative terms it's an extremely low-risk road.

i am under 30 thats correct. you must be over 30 to have said that, so why not answer my question?

its being claimed someone over 30 is more responsible than someone under 30, im unsure how thats correct 100% of the time.

I am not saying that Wij there has got to be a compromise, most country roads are stupid to have a 60 limit, yet you get people doing even faster on them because they want to. There will always be some roads where you could probably go faster than is judged sensible. We cannot have individuals judging the speed as they see fit.

The initial question was I have been caught speeding shall I pay up, I mean come on if you speed and get caught be grown up enough to say ok I made the decision to speed I willl accept responsibilty.

Its clearly the case Tris, most of the 30+ on this thread admit to speeding and not giving a shit.

ok - I've already agreed he should pay so now you need to agree that some speed limits have been set too low (not advocating breaking them at all.) :)

I'm sure you have done and still do other things that are wrong...

wij, im not sure thats possible.

who am i to say that 20 limit should be a 40 instead? im no expert in deciding speed limits and all the factors that need to be taken into consideration.

3-4mph over is not something I consider radical, it is nigh on impossible to keep to exactly 30mph. but 41 in a 30 zone and 100 in a 40 zone is the speed im talking about.

I'm not saying you are but you must admit the possibility that many roads have limits that do not make sense in comparison to others. That leaves two possibilities.

1.) Accept that SOMEONE could probably have done a better job. No need to decide who, just in principle.

2.) Set all limits really low because who knows everything, really, eh, not everything, really !

To a certain extent you are right.

but after you have been driving for about 10 to 20 years on all types of roads speed limits, different countries (and their speed limits on roads) etc etc etc...i think you develop a good instinct of what is right and what is the wrong on a road....

I know that about 90% of people drive about 50mph down my road and I think they should be doing 30mph. There are a lot of people who cross the road, there are two schools, there are a lot of blind driveway acesses etc...

You get a "feel" for things when you have experience of driving. You can't tell me someone who has 1 year driving experience is a better driver than someone with 5 years. Insurance companies know this fact. They incorporate into their Premium Calculations...if it wasnt true an 18 year old first time driver would have the same premium as a 30 year old driver...

Its not rocket science ffs...

No it wasn't.

So I've got a letter saying I was speeding, 41 in a 30, through Cambridge and they're offering me a quick pay fixed penalty of £60 and 3 points on my licence - instead of letting go through the court. Is this a bit excessive, the points I mean, or should I just pay up and have done with it?

Caleaen, you obviously know nothing about road safety. Do yourself a favour, stop digging.

you get a feel yes. but the only person your taking this info from is your self, if you get me. you just assume that what you think is correct.

and yeh im not that stupid believe it or not. i can comprehend someone driving 5 yrs will be more experienced than someone driving 1 year. but thats not the same as saying everyone under 30 is a bad driver.

i passed all my theory test/hazard perception shit and the driving test with the grades someone training to be an instructor should attain. now ive been driving for 4 years. i think im good, but whos to say im right? i could be shit, but i think im good.

Oh and you're right by the way. Im over 30, I speed and I DO NOT GIVE A FUCK!! :)

I never, however, drive in what I consider a dangerous fashion.

Lastly, for the record, I was joking about the over 30 statement, as Id hoped you would realise. I passed my bike test when I was 17 and a month.
