Two cars can be driving down the same stretch of 30 limit road. The first is driven at 40mph by a driver who is concentrating, visually aware of his surroundings...
Which one will the speed camera get?

Surely the 40mph guy would see the camera and slow down accordingly :p

Cameras and cameravans are not a hazard that an observant motorist should need to be looking out for.

even if not looking for it, its hard to miss the multiple camera signs they have to have, the big yellow box and a police van parked at the side of the road.

You what?

Since when is a Cameravan ever clearly marked as such?
I have certainly not seen one that was. They usually try and make them as unnoticable as possible. There are certainly no warning signs!

And the reason is not to slow down traffic but to rake in the cash!

if there is a camera on a road there will always (afaik) be a sign warning of speed cameras possibly being there.

Not if its one the police have in a van and can move around. They are not yellow. They are usually well hidden.

The nice yellow box ones on a pole have some signs yes.

I'm not ignorant of the issues surrounding speed camera's whether it be that they don't capture other types of dangerous driving etc however it fails to address a simple fact that where ever a speed camera is when you pass it and it flashes you've broken the speed limit for that stretch of road and thus the law

To drive every driver knows the speed limits of most roads and should be keeping an eye out for signs with speed limits but we seem to believe we have a right to do more than the legal limit and when we get caught we cry that there isn't a sign regarding a speed camera or didn't receive a NIP in 14 days blah blah blah when at the end of the day it is a simple open and shut case, you knew the speed limit and decided to try your luck and lost.....tough.

My personal bug with speed cameras is that on some parts of roads they do indeed seem rather pointless, esp when my true bug is the red light jumping which reaches epic proportions at junctions on the A4, something I would consider far more dangerous but I won't try and justify the removal one just because the other is seemingly ignored.

BTW If you did the speed limit cameras wouldn't be revenue raising devices they've allegedly become on many stretches of roads.

Often placed 6 feet behind the van. The van gets you 1/2 a mile away. Not much use then.

Great. Then you'd have thousands of motorists not able to pass safely. Not able to stagger their position in each lane so they have somewhere to swerve. Not able to overtake safely. Tailgating each other.

Basically a nation of motorists getting in the car and turning their brains off. Good system.

And then they'd just drop the limit further. After all, no fines = no jobs. Massive conflict of interest, like paying judges bonuses to jail people.

My main problem with people like Tom (even though he does have a few good points regarding safety and such) is that they waste police time and money by forcing them to persue them and provide copies of fucking calibration certificates etc.

If you get a fucking speeding ticket, tough fucking luck. You risked it, you pay it. Shut the fuck up and stop wasting police time and money on persuing you when you know full well you did it. I personally think you should have to pay for all the time wasting you induce directly.

If you want the law to change, write a letter to your MP, join a campaigning group and do it the safe, legal way. I know that sounds like turd, and it is utter turd, but that's the way this country works.

Tom, just remember a little knowledge is dangerous. You only had 5 lessons and probably read various bits of literature. Imagine the training a traffic cop gets - do you actually have anywhere near their level of skill and training?

You may well be qualified to drive a bit faster than others due to a better car and better knowledge on the road, but that doesnt mean everyone can. Some people are fucking stupid and cannot be trained, yet they get a licence anyway. These are the people who the speed limits are for.

If you drive like a zombie, at least do it slowly.

No I don't have anything near their level of training. I've been in the back of a police car on a response, with an advanced driver, and I shat my pants. It was bloody scary, but I felt quite safe.

I'll waste as much of their time as I like. If they persist in trying to rigorously enforce unjust laws, I'll persist in using every legal means at my disposal to make it more time consuming and more expensive for them.

Theres very little thats unsafe about my driving. I say very little because I recognise that I do make mistakes - but at least I try to eliminate them.

You waste their time, they stick up more cameras to make up for the cash you cost them.

And I made a post which I feel addresses that problem, but with a Labour government it will never happen.

Mrs Thatcher already gave the 'poor' houses with her right to buy for residents of council houses. She was the sex and you all god damn well know it

So many people are better off now because of things Thatcher did yet they seem to have short memories when suits.

Bummers.

I prefer living in a capitalist democracy rather than a socialist democracy thanks. The latter never works.

Roughly translated as thus "Be a good little bitch and bare your arse for raping every time the government decides you were a bit naughty and were doing 34 in a 30. After all, it's easier than catching murderers and rapists isn't it?". Nothing's gonna change if we all take that attitude, and that's quite a sad thought. Also remember, when you contest a speed camera fine, you are not wasting police time in the slightest. The only time you're wasting is that of the Safety Camera Patnership, which is a bunch of civil servants who were brought in especially to deal with speed cameras. And civil servants have loads of time to waste (I know I used to be one), so fucking get involved is what I say. Contesting mine got 6 points and a 120 pound fine reduced to 3 points and a 90 pound fine. Well worth wasting the civil services time over if you ask me.

Speed cameras = bollocks. There is no way on earth a camera on a stick can make any judgement whatsoever on whether someone was driving dangerously or not. The only way you can do that is to have a copper on the road in a patrol car.
