Really taken an interest in powerful photography recently, was wondering if people could find some of those classic old shots that show a powerful message.. for example..

Less captions, the better, maybe where it is, when it was etc.

Posed for. Fucking load of set-up bollocks. :(
Not really, depends how you see it... They took the first down because it was too small, not so they could get a perfect picture, it was just that the second one was a better and alot more powerful image, just been reading the Wikipedia page about it - they got attacked inbetween the flags, and the camera that took the first shot was blown up in the attack, although no soldiers were hurt.

Such powerful images, but poignant in a way as photojournalism is dying itself.

Everyone has a camera now, there are people on the ground taking powerful footage long before the photojournalists can.

I read about that, sad story. What's especially shitty is that I believe he received a fair amount of criticism for it also yet the photojournalists were explicitly told not to interfere with the people there, so while he chased that vulture off, he couldn't help the child anyway.

Photographer's name was Kevin Carter. He was a member of a very well known group of snappers.

I can (and do) give him a pass. But he did snap that shot, then carry on...

Edit: I've never seen that photo before but went no further in the thread before PM'ing fuzzy. It's astonishing.

If people could explain the history of the images. I know some but not all, and would like to know. Good thread.

The first picture is "tank man" and was during the student protests in Tiananmen Square in Beijing 1989. The guy was apparently walking home with some shopping and crossed the road as the tanks rolled down. He stood in front of the lead tank and moved to stop it each time it tried to go around. He was later seen having words with the tank commander and was shuffled off by a couple of people shortly afterwards.

The Iwo Jima picture was iconic, but unfortunately staged. It wasn't a spontaneous capture of the moment.

The Buddhist monk self-immolating was a statement against the South Vietnam government in 1963. What makes this statement even more intense is that he didn't move at all when he lit himself. He wilfully just sat there burning to death.

The execution picture was Vietnam's chief of police shooting a VC soldier in 1968.

The Kevin Carter vulture picture has already been discussed.

Lamp's Apollo 11 pic. 'Nuff said.

The National Geographic "Afghan Girl" was published in 1985. I find this follow-on article from 20 years later interesting.

This image says a lot about how the world has changed in 40 years.
When it was taken it was a powerful message about the effect of war on innocents.
These days it could be construed as child porn because of the naked girl. Utter madness.

In case you're like Nixon and disbelieve the image, here's some video to put it in context.

I love that Soviet picture, it's fantastic.

Its from the Spanish Civil War, called "Falling Soldier", taken by a guy called Robert Capa, and the guy in the shot (a Republican soldier called Cerro Muriano) is dying as the shot is taken. A lot of people claimed it was fake, but the belief these days is that its genuine.

The Soviet one is taken on top of the Reich-stag in Berlin, and just like the Iwo one, they came back and retook the shot (I think they originally reached the roof at night). To be fair, lots of the most iconic shots from WWII were staged; there's a famous one from El Alamein that looks all dramatic and action-y, but turns out to be completely fake. Found it:
