Met this guy today, while doing some filming for Panorama. He was at an Amnesty International meeting in UMIST, Manchester, also there was the father of another 'detainee', who has yet to be released.
BTW One of the reasons the Taliban thought he was a spy was because he had a digital clock radio in his possession!
Some of the things he mentioned while chatting to the father were appauling. It made me think of Bowling for Columbine, and Michael Moore's assertion that Americans were afraid of everything they didn't understand, and perhaps this fear has led to the detainees current situation, where they have no access to legal advice.
My own view is that any security issues with legal advisers are just a risk that you have to take, and that the freedom and liberty of a minority are just as important as the potential for violence/death against a majority.
I also find it a bit odd now, that UK citizens could be held for so long, with our government doing nothing for their plight. Makes you wonder, what kind of deals went on in the background, that such an important PR stunt for our government went unused.
