I've got the first one and I lub backslash, dont know if I'm going to trade it for climb walls and safe fall3..
50 ins is a must tho

Bollox is it the "best spec".

I personally wouldn't spend extra points in stealth just to sustain no damage when leaping from keeps and MGs when I could beef melee damage a touch.

"Best spec" is very subjective.

Minstrels are a versatile class, it's not all powersong-and-afk-a-min-guys--brb-in-an-hour


The 'best' spec is what suits you best. Play the class and see what you like about it. If you're going to post around forums asking for the 'best spec' you may aswell go '50/30/30' without asking any more questions.


If you want to tailor the class to your needs, use something like the Catacombs character builder. Find the skills most important to you in each spec-line, then split the points and compromise as needed. You should end up with the 'best spec'.

i hit unbuffed SB's for up to 250 dmg a hit, add shouts insta stun ,mezz , ablative to that and you actually arent that bad in melee,,
I dont pop a tank without a pet tho(solo) unless i got both ip and sos rdy =P. I dont think i will respec out of backslash just to get climb-walls and safe fall3 as I've only been at 3 retakes sofar. I will already have safe fall2 with 21 stealth and i really love Backslash.

I've found that 44 instruments/34 <insert weapon type>/35 stealth (I think that's how it comes out, have to look it up again) works quite nicely, but you could always ditch some stealth to get more points in slash/thrust and instruments if you're wanting to get 50 instruments - even if 50 instruments is kinda pointless before 1.60 when minstrel get a whole load of loving =)

Being a thrust minstrel with this spec I still seem to eat equal level skalds and other thrust vulnerable people who don't block like there's no tomorrow. Though if you're not into beating abusing people, standing at the back demezzing people seems to be popular.

Note i said best Minstrel Spec in Brackets, i personally feel it is an utter shite template. But i like to solo alot, many minstrel's like to group and goto keep takes.

I will personally be going 50/43, so i can have the best possible melee output with 50 in Instruments, i dont use stealth often, and i cant honestly remember the last keep take i was on with my minstrel. (Note the many I's in there. There are many spec's and 50/30/30 is the most well rounded, a good place to start if you dont know your playstyle/template.

Melee damage between 30 and 40 spec is 5-10%, that's a lot of points for not much difference. FWIW I hit SBs for 200-250 with 30 slash while buffed. Oh and backslash sucks.

think the difference between 29 and 39 slash was something like 6%? your choice as to whether that's more important than stealth.

Unbuffed it's 5 weaponskill per train in slash. So the difference 30 to 40 makes is 50 weaponskill which is around 6% of your weaponskill. Since weaponskill and damage have a direct correlation, it's 6% difference in damage. The 6% is also true while buffed (though the numbers are a bit large obviously).

At the moment the best spec is something like 44 inst (unless someone can give me a very good reason to spec 50 already), somewhere above 34 weaponskill and rest in stealth.

Next patch it'll probably be something like 50 inst and the highest possible weapon spec you can get without going below 25 stealth if you want climb walls or higher weapon spec if you can't be arsed with climb walls.

50/34/26 still sounds the best to me atm.

But if I was thinking about re-speccing or speccing from scratch I would want to take into account the changes in patches we know are coming. That way I wont be peeved off when the changes do come in and I followed the advice of ppl who told me how to spec pre-changes :kissit:

OK, seriously, I like 50 instruments at the moment, but the benefits are fairly marginal compared to other similar specs. If you want to go full support (best power song, best heal song etc) and have an easier time of holding high level pets, you get more from speccing full instruments than from a few points of weaponskill or stealth imo. But it's not a huge difference however you cut it. (I think higher instruments also effects damage output from shouts, but not sure about that. I doubt it makes a lot of difference.)

Most people will advise you to spec:

29+ slash (for amethyst slash)
43+ instruments (for speed 5)
25+ stealth (if you want to climb walls after the next patch)

Any spec that includes all of these will play similarly. Obv with higher stealth you might have an easier time in stealth groups, although any two bit assassin with see hidden will head straight for you.

If you ever think you might want to use the AE mez in anger (and you can easily go your whole minstrel career without every putting it on the hotbar) then it's worth taking instruments to 45. Not for the few extra seconds so much as because resists are partly based on spell level, so that level 45 mez will be resisted less.

I'm at 50/30/30 at the moment and it's fine.
