This is one for those of us who live in the UK.

I read a lot of books, mainly by american authors and everytime they have an english character they call them British, if they are scotish/welsh or irish then they are referred to as scotish, welsh or irish but english characters are always british.

Personally i never refer to myself as being british, if someone asks me where i am from i say i am english *waits for English to post and say "no your not...i am!"*, even on forms where i have to state my nationality i put other rather than british.

So how do you refer to yourself are you british or english, welsh, scotish or irish?

Rob Brydon did a program on BBC3 or 4 not to long ago about wondering what it means to be from a particular country. He's lived in London for 20 odd years so felt as though he'd forgotten what it meant to be Welsh.

I'm a Taff and I'm happy to be Welsh. I don't speak Welsh, can't remember all the words to our national anthem (though I did know them in school) and have no problem with English people. I'm even friends with some. :p

Not really surprised you got dodgy looks tbh. I suppose if you went to a pub in Newcastle and started talking about how much you loved Sunderland you might get a similar reaction. Same the world over though, I don't imagine the Belgians would like being called French, the Canadians being called American, etc.

Stands to reason you wouldn't mind being called Welsh though, it's because we're better than the English. :p

English - British.

To me the words "British" and "Great Britain" conjure up images of the Union Jack, World War 2 and alot of other things from our history that make me very proud, "English" is the same but to a lesser extent I think, it somehow sounds more medieval to me for some reason, or atleast oldfashioned. I know they dont refer to the same things, and I am aware of the differences, however to me they mean more or less the same thing.

If someone asked my nationality I'd say "British" I suppose, either of the two :)

If Liverpool got their own independance then it'd implode within 2 weeks because the government would try and decide a currency system for hub caps.

No, we'd put a tax on foreigners wanting our parmos and who needs hub caps when you can take the whole car? :p

I dont think so - there's a British government, I didnt think there was a Scandinavian government?

For example: Wales comes under the British Monarchy, so Queen Elizabeth II is Wales' head of state. I didnt think it worked like that in Scandinavia? I thought each of the countries were self-governed soveriegn nations that were indepentent from each other?

English first, British second.

I am also very much a royalist :) what the whining lefties don't realise or appreciate is that if it wasn't for the royals we wouldn't be one of the biggest and best countries in the world (despite our size) Its something to be proud of that we still have a monarchy.

We northerners don't need to try and boast about being the better half since we all know it's inherant that the North is the better half but we don't need to keep trying to prove it. ;)

What the archaic right wing don't realise is that without a democratic government the monarchy would have collapsed, it was made because of the failures of the monarchy.
The current monarchy is nothing but a tourist attraction, a relic from the past which people come and oo and ahh at.

To clarify I have no problem pledging allegience to england or rather Britain as i am part welsh too :p, however i refuse to do so to a person irrespective of who they are

Sums up my feelings on the subject pretty well ^^

I dont see what problem anyone could possibly have with swearing allegiance to a monarchy which, whilst being largly ceremonial these days, represents - directly or indirectly -the proud history and tradition of this country which dates back for hundreds of years.

I guess everyone has thier own opinions on this matter though.
