im going to sound really prentenious here, but, its better than reeling off names of bands you've never heard, without explaining a bit about 'em

Blonde Redhead - minimalist art pop with guitars

Le Tigre - riot grrrl! style early electro pop, try 'Deceptacon' for starters

Cats Miaow - gentle and sweet with songs that are really short, and shouldnt be!

Pavement - indie pop/rock - its fucking great, er, if you like the pixies with a more wussy voice, and less anger.... try ' Zurich Is stained'

The Magnetic Fields - Peotry with ukaleles, Stephin Merrit is a complete and utter genius, try 'Luckiest Guy on the lower east side'

Fugazi - hardcore punk, try 'Repeater'

Boyracer - more indie pop, but its not as twee as most of the bands in the scene. try 'Sarah and Sarah'

The Dirtbombs - detroit garage rock band, at their best when they cover old motown/soul tracks, with a scuzzy twist. try ' chains of love'

Grandaddy - not as shit as the name, my fave album is 'Sophtware Slump' sort of like Ok Computer meets Deserters Songs(Mercury Rev)

Felt - MORE indie pop, from the eighties, super amazing guitar playing, comparable to the smiths in places, except they predate the smiths by 5 years....if you like them try the bands Denim and Go Kart Mozart. try the songs 'Dark Red Birds' and 'Dont Die on My Doorstep'

The Faint - if you have heard Hot Hot Heat, i suppose they sound a bit darker and with electro beats, rather than straight drums.
try 'casual sex'

The Wedding Present - punk/pop/teenagery, thick guitars that sound a LOT like the smiths in places, but David Gedge's voice, is nothing like Morrissey's, try 'Brassneck' or 'Take me' and if you like them, try the band 'Cinerama'.

Ladytron - funky upbeat electro pop, try 'Seventeen'

The Von Bondies - fuzzy detorit garage band, play surf rock but really heavy, try 'Lack Of Communication'

Kings Of Leon - alt.country, try 'Califonia Waiting'

Cat Power - im fed up now, of comparing bands, and pigeonholing them, i dunno what to compare her to, but try 'Free'

well that'll do for now

twee is wrong with twee,

i LOVE indie pop, but i think (other than Belle & Sebastian) Boyracer is perhaps the most appealing.

And i hate hate hate hate The Trembling Blue Stars, Field Mice et al, god its fucking sickeningly shit.

have you heard Dressy Bessy? they're REALLY sickly sweet, but ina girl band style sort of like Shangri Las meets Oasis?

and the Trash Can Sinatras are ace too!

Bearsuit, Talulah Gosh, Baxendale, Juniper Moon, the Postal Service, Apples in Stereo, Aislers Set

all have done GOOD albums, and some great tracks on their own!

oh and, the new Hidden Cameras Album - The Smell of our own, its absolutely fantastic.

"fuck me im twee"

I know this doesn't really count as lesser known, but Genesis' early stuff should definitely be checked out. Anything from "Genesis to Revelation", "Seconds Out" "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" or "And Then There were Three" comes highly recommended tbh.

The Roots deserve props. Their album Phrenology is the best hip hop album I've heard in years.

Wilco, they almost inexplicably remind me of the less showy T-rex songs, especially Pot Kettle Black.

Which in turn inexplicably reminds me of Inbetween Days by The Cure.

Some lesser known artists i like:

King Adora - Medium ish rock with scorching vocals. Best tracks = Suffocate + Bionic

Interpol - NYC band very similar to joy division but far superior in my opinion. Best tracks = Obstacle 1 + PDA

Hot Hot heat: Funky canadian band, certainly my favourite album at the moment. Best Tracks = Bandages, Talk to me dance with me + No, Not now

Hoobastank: Nu metal band a lot like incubus. Best tracks = Pieces + remember me

A Perfect Circle: Very slow and chilling light rock. Best tracks = Orestes + 3 Libras

Moving Units: Not heard much of them but they supported Hot Hot Heat. Best Track = Melodrama

Turin Brakes = Accoustic duet who recently got in the chart with pain killer. Best Tracks = Long Distance + Pain Killer

Emiliana Torrini has got an amazing voice, but I way prefer her more bizarre songs like If You Go Away, and Tuna Fish to some of her more poppy tunes. She's got a voice thats similar to Bjorks, with the added bonus that she doesn't make me want to smack her with a brick. (I've never forgiven Bjork for that hateful Its All So Quiet song).

Morphine is another favourite of mine, great songs for sitting around in a smokey room.

Classics that people tend to miss (shame and fie!) are Blind Melon and the Pixies - both amazing bands, and some great tunes. Blind Melon songs I'd recommend are No Rain (ripped away version), Toes Across the Floor, Soul One and Mouthful of Cavities. Play Soul One to any woman and she'll be putty in your hands, I've yet to meet a single woman who didn't go all dewey eyed at that song. Pixies? You cant go far wrong regardless, Gouge Away is a favourite of mine, the Doolittle album is just pure genius.

If you missed Ruby first time round, I loved some of her music. Paraffin was a great one.

Incubus is quite well known now, but if you've skipped past them check out The Warmth and Consequence for starters.

One off songs I have known and loved - Gary Jules version of "Mad World", Tracy Bonham's "Mother Mother", Tool "Sober", oh and Everlast "What its like".

Has anyone heard the Serart advance? Its pretty crap, and I gather its lesser known, if only because its not out yet. Lesser known than what, I don't know; qualify.

('I'm gonna pull you in close, gonna wrap you up tight
Gonna play with the braids that you came here with tonight' - interpol; yes, ok!)

Seems like you already know what I listen to?

Oh and next time you 'attempt' to insult someone, do us all a favour and try to come out with something a little more original and / or humourous. That was neither.

Interpol
my best friend's a butcher, he has sixteen knives
he carries them all over the town at least he tries oh look it stopped snowing
my best friend's from Poland and oh he has a beard
but they caught him with his case in a public place that is what we had feared

really, they dont sound like Joy Division much at all, similar voices maybe, and its moody. But Joy Division are REALLY sparse compared to Interpol, their drum beats arent straight rock, they're more like electro drum beats, afaik, Joy Div refrained from using Bass. Interpol sound like a moody rock band, Joy Divsion, not only invented that moody post punk, but electroclash too, sort of.

Love Will tear Us Apart, Shes Lost Control, Isolation, Transmission, Dead Souls and Heart & Soul are all around 100 X better than anything Interpol will ever do, and have done.
