Helmets in the second world war weren't particually worn for protective reasons, they housed communication devices/breathing apperatus/shades, etc.

I believe the answer is that there where few if any kamikazee pilots, they did have a lot of pilots with virtualy no flying experience. Im not sure why you think kamikazee pilots wear helmets, but what you think was a kamikazee pilot wearing a helmet was probably just some kid with not enough skill to stear round whatever he 'kamikazeed' into.

probably to stop chance of the pilot hitting his head and being knocked unconcious before he hit target.

uhm its rather cold high in the air, you also want to have the radio abd possibly some breathing equipment. Besides that as yaruar said no helm in ww2 had any protective use (except maybe against the cold).
Also if a kamikazee plane actually crashes into something it is alot different than when a normal plane does that. Besides that I think the japs used outdated planes for the kamikazee.

Either to hold the equipment, such as radio etc..

Or to stop them hitting their head before they blow up their target. Makes sure its the impact of the plane that kills them quickly, and not them hitting their head on the window screen.

They happened to be some of the greatest pilots either side posessed.

I'm not sure I've taken the time to say 'good riddance' today. Must be slipping in my apathy...wait, does that make sense? :eek7:
