the thought is good, but on the other hand it would most likely not make any difference, as my guess is Loch stored all her PW's in a document on her computer, or else the hacker would not have got access to her account right? So if there was some kind of password like this, she most likely have had that stored along with the others.

Afaik no.

No but I take basic security steps, if you're house has the doors wide open and mine locked shut do you really think they'll take the effort to break my windows first?

If they're at you're house I expect they would, otherwise they'd have to drive all the way to my house :\

P.S. leaving doors open analogy would only apply if you were knowingly running services on you're computer o_O

Is it her fault ?

There's a slight difference between rape and deleting someone's DAoC character. Even so, smart girls shouldn't walk alone at night, specially not after dressing up for a party and stumbling home drunk in the dark. Anyway, that's another thread.

"Tbh, imo anyone who gives out their IP address without having sufficient protection is kinda stupid anyway, and prolly deserves to be hacked"

Indeed, someone was owned by their own words.

Not to mention, that you should've implemented a "safer" way for character deletion, by, for example: you have to type y e s, then you must enter a secret character deletion password, which is given to you after you've made your account.

That is a superb idea - would be cool if they could implement it :)

Guys you're all missing the picture.

Even with security in place a determined hacker could get through.

I know nothing of him/her but if he/she is unfamiliar with PC's, security, firewalls etc then you cant really blame him/her for lack of security.

I used this analogy before - everyone knows kids shouldnt talk to strangers but if they do and get kidnapped (or worse) do we say "You should have been more carefull!" etc.

No. Its a crime - regardless and Loch isnt to blame. IMO Goa have the ability to restore the chars - if they dont they are sailing close to the wind in terms of their own security. They should in theory be taking weekly/daily rolling backups of the player base with a copy being maintained offsite.

I can't see what all this hacking fuss is about. She admitted on IRC that she had given her pass to someone. I bet 100 to 1 that whoever had the pass leaked or did it.

If someone WANTS to hack your game password and is commited, the chances are they can (unless you change it frequently, I try to do this at least every month) However, if you have told someone else the account info to log in and abuse you're characters then im sorry but you only have yourself to blame and GOA should not offer any support for this problem.

If you know nothing about security you should atleast do a minimal effort to learn the basics of internet security
I used this analogy before - everyone knows kids shouldnt talk to strangers but if they do and get kidnapped (or worse) do we say "You should have been more carefull!" etc.
everyone knows kids shouldnt play with mathces, but if they do and burn their fingers they get a slap around the ears and told to suck on it

yes they should and they probebly do, but restoring 1 char from backup might take a full restore of the DB (read down time and a possible roll back for all player)
Having worked on large databases i know what a pain it can be and time it takes to retrive 1 record from a 120 gig tape.

Unfortunately I don't log public channels. But there are people in my guild who have played Loch so it's not like she's been keeping the pass in a safe.

Well if is the case, then GOA should do nothing, as they have stated if an account is traded/lent to someone else then no support is given on that account, and it may be subject to suspencion/termination.

I wholly agree. well said. I wouldn't expect any sympathy if i had done the same. TBH, dont' know why it was broadcast on here in the first place ... Goa won't change the way they work, and they shouldn't have to IMHO.

If you're legitmatlly hacked, ok, theres a problem. And maybe i would speak to rightnow or something but i sure as hell wouldn't make it known that this had happened , in a public forum.

The other thing is ... isn't it funny after 8 pages it has come to light that the account password has been given to other people. kinda knew this was gonna happen...

MODERATORS : Maybe you should close this thread now as a warning to others. You give your password out. You lose in the long run. / You give your password out, and whine - you get found out....

I really don't know what I've ever done to you, but kindly stop spreading lies in public. Even if it makes you feel big to do it, it reflects badly on you in the end.
