How could anyone recommend nvidia over amd when it comes to 4k? Lower VRAM and gimped pci bandwith(unless you want to piss 750 quid up the wall on a titan.. By which point you might aswel just xfire 2 290s). . The most important things for high res
Won't the upcoming 800 series rectify that?

From the early leaked specs so far which might be Bull shit anyway, the first card to be released will be no better than a 780. But on the past nvidia always release cards with lower VRAM and pci bandwith

Depends if you can afford it and want the highest specs. Certainly did not think putting 2 of them in my last build was pissing it up the wall. I run triple screen at 6k by 1080p but am considering 2x 4k for gaming and a monitor screen. just waiting for Samsung and LG panels to come to market.

Actually, baring Titans they are pretty much like for like and I am not dropping £600 - £700 on a Titan thanks. At the time my 290 was far better than Nvidias offering in that price range.
Have you had any driver issues? I'm still torn about my next cards due to ATI and their driver history and lack of current Linux support.

No issues on Win 7 except having to update them to get Wolfenstein to work.

That's the kind of thing I mean though I've not had that on NVidia ever.

What lack of current Linux support? I don't have anything other than onboard Intel graphics on my Linux box (and it's headless anyway) but I see Linux drivers for AMD cards (including Ubuntu 14.04, which is "current" afaic).

They put out stable and beta, just like pretty much everyone.

Nah, they were <whatever was on the disk> I hadn't updated drivers and such after the initial (unconnected to the internet) build.

hmmf, my AMD fanboyism may have bitten me in the arse slightly. Reading up on it, it seems a single 290 struggles with 4k. I simply will not game with anything less than 60fps and really don't want to have to buy a 4k panel and another card to set up as crossfire (crossfire is shite anyway)

Does anyone here have any experience of 4k and AMD GPUs?

This is my card http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/R9290XDC2OC4GD5/ Edit, mine isn't the X version.

Also planning on getting a new case soon and would consider 3rd party water cooling for the GPU, going to stick it in a http://www.corsair.com/en-gb/carbide-series-air-540-high-airflow-atx-cube-case

I'm on a single 280x and doing fine in most games.

It really depends on what you're playing.

Also the R9 280/290 series have a lot more memory bandwidth than the 770/780, and more vram.
Different games will favour one brand over another.

And the people whining are people playing crysis 3 in ultra... w/ more AA than you need lol. MSAA in general will use quite a bit of load, FXAA uses very little, and you only need 2x anyway, 4-8x is very hard to notice.

The most cost efficient solution is 2x 7970s in sli, you'll outperform a 780ti for way less money.

@ECA, have you tried anything more taxing than CS:GO, I have been thinking about 4K given the cost of monitors have come down but thought I would have to upgrade my 7970 VaporX.

If you're going the Crossfire route, you can either pick up a second hand 7970 and pair it up with the one you have but they are like rocking-horse shit now... because...

The R9-280X is identical in every way to the 7970, and even works with one in Crossfire.

Well probably the most stressful game I regularly play on it is Assetto Corsa. I squeek just above a constant 60fps with almost everything on ultra.
My 280x hits 76 degrees at 97% load! lol.

Sidenote : saw some artificial benchmarks from the 980 today and it comes out a tiny bit behind the 780ti ( I understand why they'd do that, if you get a non-reference card and OC it a tiny bit it beats the ti ).

If they are reasonably priced, I might have to pick one up once they come out with decently quiet coolers on them. ( Hello DCU2 ).

Going to take the plung, will play WoW at 4k 60fps and can always bump it down if any AAA titles struggle.

I think I might OC when I get my new case and sort out some semi water cooling. I read somewhere that Corsair are going to be doing closed loop GPU cooling at some point. can't find a link so may have imagined it...

I dunno, google some reviews :p

The reason I went with the iiyama is because it has built in speakers, height adjustable stand ( a bunch of them dont and that sucks ), and USB hub on the side - all features I like in a monitor.

No I don't :p I have some 598s and a gaming headset as well, and also a 7.1 surround setup, but if I want to quickly play someone something from youtube, so I don't have to hand them headphones it's a nice solution :)
