The problem is - the Labour and the Lib Dem solution to this sort of stuff is to censor and ban. Not to present better ideas and alternatives themselves and argue for them.

Interesting, Rory looks like a nob in this, but 2% minimum 'wealth' tax for people on more than £100m.

If I've understood it properly, it means that if you're a British citizen (or subject, I suppose) and you earn more than £100m you must pay 2% wealth tax as a minimum, ie if you've paid 2%+ through income tax or other means then you don't need to pay it, and it'll be chased abroad too and your wealth is calculated through assets which information the Government already has accessed to.

Explain to me like I'm 5 why this is such a terrible idea...

people with that kind of money will pay someone far less than 2% of their annual wealth to avoid it. Right wingers will use it as an example of how it shows the skivers want to punish the strivers.

Because it's a tax based entirely on the goodwill of those being taxed, and the people with that kind of goodwill are probably paying tax at that level already. Everyone else minimises their exposure in a million different ways, because they can afford better accounts than HMRC.

I'm also very dubious about taxing assets on general principles, because once the taxman figures out how to do it properly, the rest of us are next.

So, you can fuck, and you will likely soon be able to vote, but you can't browse instagram after midnight if you're 16 or 17.

I mean, of course we want them to vote. But we don't want them to watch any material that will stop them being rabid lefties, like kids tend to be...

New PM needs to go, he hasn't solved the UK immigrant crisis in 15 minutes. Need a referendum.

-- The Telegraph, probably.

Sky News had a clip of when he was outside Downing Street hugging his mum and all the comments were like 'I bet he's telling her he's increasing her pension' or 'You won't be alive to see the next election' or 'He'll be home for Sunday dinner, don't worry.'

Reform has caught on hasn't it - hate the country unless it's Nige.

He's going to have to do major structural change that addresses the problems, or we'll come round again tbh. Changes like knocking 45 quid off people's 'leccy bills aren't going to cut the mustard.

I'd love him to do something different - and I actually like Burnham. I think he's a man of principle. I'm worried that it's all window-dressing.

Putting a zionist-by-any-other-name in as foreign secretary isn't real change is it. Milliband is basically a jewish zionist who denies he's a zionist, but is really. But still, he's a bazillion times better than war criminal Starmer. But it's really BAU on Israel isn't it. He's still making noises about recognising a Palestinian State. But it's been wiped out and Israel is doing what it does - expanding, taking territory, not giving a fuck. Is Miliband going to change that? Is he going to allow or actively pursue sanctions on Israel? Or window-dress wanky "sanctions" on stuff from "illegal settlements" - which is just a sideshow from actual real sanctions on Israel.

Lets face it though. Farage would give them extra missiles.

2 years though is hardly enough time to do major structural change - and if there is an Reform win at the next GE then they'll reap the benefits of it.

I think the reality is that it's going to be shit for a good while anyway, but it's about explaining what's being done and the long term plan and being able to communicate it, I think judging by what we've seen so far of Starmer vs Burnham, Burnham is simply a better communicator.

Miliband for Foreign Secretary is a genius move, especially so if he is a Zionist, it'll be hard for the right-wing press to whip out the antisemitism accusations again, especially if they do take a harder line against Israel. I think Burnham has made it very clear that Starmer got Israel completely wrong. I think the problem with Israel is that we can't be too critical, Trump will rake us over the coals, much like has done with Spain.

It's pretty clear that we need to step up stepping away from America, but equally I think it would be dangerous to make that an 'open policy' with Trump as President still, I think it would be far better to openly announce a closer relationship with Europe and away from the US when the Democrats are in power - because it'll be hard for them to argue that it's a bad thing to do when they've spent forever criticising Trump.

They whipped that out on Corbyn. Because he actually wanted to sanction Israel for it's war crimes. He actually wanted to act in a moral fashion. So Corbyn was never going to be allowed to be voted in.

They didn't give a fuck about Starmer. They won't give a fuck about Miliband.

Nope. I think it's pretty fucking clear we need freedom of speech, primacy of the individual (because justice is experienced at the individual level). We need to push back on our increasingly authoritarian bent and look at what we're doing.

We're the pot calling the kettle black on Trump. America will be fine. At the end of the day, despite wholesale dismantling, their checks and balances will see them right. The hysteria in Europe over Trump is still, IMO, massively overblown - and nice cover for all the authoritarian technocratic shit we're up to.

We need to fix our own shit first, before taking a pop at a country that still has more codified liberty than we do.

I’ll hold off on judgement on checks and balances until after next cycle in US. Trump and republicans in general are dismantling the checks with glee. Democratic states are joining the game out of fear of being left out entirely.

Balls. The gerrymandering and general shithousery is happening on both sides of the equation and has been for ages. The outrage is outsized and is more about the fact that Europe is ideologically diverging from the USA than it is about the USA turning into a total shit tip.

We might be looking at the USA and be thinking "they're going to hell" - and who knows, maybe they actually are - but they're just joining us in undemocratic, authoritarian asshattery.
