The problem is Summo this site is open to the public.... Ted and Deebs owe a "duty of care" to anyone who comes here and reads the information. It isn't just a place for the old bw regulars there is no password etc etc to get onto the forums, Ted and Deebs have already said during the NSW / avatar debate that they would like these forums to appeal to a wider audience.

If you don't like a post there is a better way to go about sorting it than telling someone to die.

It's not as clear cut as that, nor will it ever be. If I chose to, I could probably find a reason to ban almost everyone on the boards for some minor misdemeanour or other (except Jonty, of course, Regards ) because the CoC is there as a guideline. It's been made clear to us that the 'die IRL' stuff should be modded strictly, the rest is largely down to discretion. For example... there is a line in the CoC about 'personal attacks'. Now, if I made a post here now and said 'so and so is just a twat' then I could probably be banned, and how ridiculous would that be? However, if I posted that towards the same individual, repeatedly, in some kind of vendetta, then I could be banned and it would probably be the right decision. Same sentence, different context and situation, different result under the same CoC.

People will flame and argue and that's fine within reason, but if it gets out of hand it will be dealt with. I don't think it does, usually, and I also call into question people's claims that 'alot of people get banned'... I think things are pretty relaxed.

I wouldn't worry too much about that tbh. The number of newcomers to the forum since the end of BW has been pretty tiny, most of the new posters in General are from the DAoC crowd. If the regulars didn't post then most of the forums would be dead so in my opinion it's better to put up with a bit of crap to keep the forums alive and interesting.

No point making the forums suitable for a catholic mother with her kids on her knee when she makes up an insignificant segment of the population.

Not relative in that sense. I'll give an analogy.

Slavery years ago was considered a good thing, but nowadays is considered bad by pretty much all of society.

The only thing that's changed is peoples' perception of it. As I said, morality (whether something is considered to be moral or immoral) is a relative notion.

Culturally: The Sudanese consider female circumcision to be an acceptable practice, yet we in the West consider it abhorrent. Who is ultimately right? Answer, neither.

Everything would be fine, absent of human judgement.

CTFOADOA was considered to be acceptable on BW, albeit sailing close to the wind. The same act is now considered unacceptable, even though the act itself hasn't changed one iota.

Morality is arbitrary, fluid and relative.
