Let's get this straight - it isn't just about identity cards. The government's identity scheme includes a huge database to keep tabs on everyone, a massive infrastructure to collect peoples' details, and a giant network of technology required to verify people against their cards and both of these against the database.
The card is just the tip of the iceberg.
..'biometric' ePassports , ID interrogation centres, Fingerprinting in pubs, Roadside fingerprinting, Recording of all car journeys as a matter of course using ANPR(automatic number plate recognition)etc etc...

Why would we want to stop having an identity?

I'd be quite happy with most of these changes, as I'm unlikely to fuck up majorly. Also, biometric I.D. would be great, as I'd have perma-ID on me.

Thugs be warned.

ANPR I dislike though, as I intend to do alot of travle by car when I'm older.

Why against ANPR? Surely if you are driving a lot then you will be following the rules of the road in order to not risk them taking your licence away.

Or did i miss the point.

A government is (or should be) the servant of the people, not its master. Privacy and freedom are yours by right and we only give governments permission to curtail these freedoms in very limited and important circumstances.

The National ID card is a giant leap towards total control and fundamentally alters the balance of power between citizen and state.
The card itself is not the real problem. The National Identity Register IS.
When we become a number on a government computer - Initially the file would contain very little (date of birth, current address…). But gradually (in the name of ‘preventing terrorism’ ‘stopping crime’ or ‘protecting children’) the file would contain or link to more and more personal information such as: your spending habits, your ethnicity, religion, sexual preferences, your political leanings, your health records, your criminal records..etc etc .

..Safety and protection at ANY price ?.

I will refuse to have one even if it means going to jail, not because I don't think an i.d. card is a good thing but the amount of data they will retain plus the rfid technology being used means that you could be tracked anywhere in the country. That is a massive infringement of civil liberties and I will be the first to protest on the streets if it goes ahead.

I would be happy to carry a basic i.d. like many countries in Europe have but anything beyond my picture and basic details is private information then no chance. There is no way they are taking fingerprint or DNA samples. Sorry, not going to happen even if it means I have to fight.

Bollocks, I have nothing to hide but I was born into a country where we had alot of personal freedom and I will be damned if I am having it taken away in a phoney war on terrorism.

Actually Thad, you're walking a fine line between insulting a member in a "haha" way and "Going Gamah".

Unlike Dori, Joor is actually bringing content into the forums...albeit..it's coocoo theories and hippy style pot smoking ideas...but that's just like saying "Tohtori is being odd!" It's Joor, and we know it, and it's fun to discuss these.

Careful there.

On and on-topic...screw you big brother, you're never tagging Teh Seel! *falls off the grid*

I think they are a good idea in many ways, though ofc it depends how they are used and what sort of fraud protection they have. The car thing is a good idea and would help if your car got nicked or the police were searching for a particular car.

The problem is Joor's posts aren't there to discuss the subject he is so blind to most things he will post whatever drivel he is sent by other tin foil hat wearers, anything that slips through that is a real danger to our freedom or rights gets swamped in all the junk.

Personally I don't have a problem with ID cards, and I certainly don't have a problem with ANPR. Unless YOU screw up, you have little to fear.

Sure, the system is always vulnerable to exploitation, but so is everything else - credit cards anyone? It will always be a constant battle to stay one step ahead of those who want to use the system for their own ends.

As for ANPR - why would anyone have a problem with it unless you're breaking the law? Last year our car was bashed by an uninsured driver in a hit and run case - cost us £500 (insurance excess) and 2 years no claims bonus. If using ANPR means they catch uninsured drivers, then thats fucking awesome.

So you are saying that if you are not a criminal then the government may use any surveillance and monitoring against you no matter how draconian and intrusive? All mail should be routinely opened, all telephone calls routinely recorded, cameras monitoring every movement you make?

Having all this information is ok until someone comes into power like Hitler, imagine what can be done when this man has all this information at hand. Dont say it will never happen in this country, never say never

If they want to see ME sexoring, i say...bring it :D

Jokes on them.
I see--question tho; Why is the government intending to spend a minimum of 5.5 BILLION pounds on an ID card system, instead of using that money on schooling, housing or urgent infrastructure improvement? YOU will pay for this..through increased taxation. Governments don’t have any money – it all comes from you and me, one way or another.
This at a time when the hospitals are a disgrace, schools are in urgent need of repair, our public transport systems are a joke and children in deprived areas are living in squalor. Now ask yourself why a government would rather spend 5.5 billion on logging us all into a giant computer system, than on such essential social tasks.

Just so theres no confusion, all the stuff the ID cards will bring already exist. You already have a government number (NI) they already have a record of your income, where you live and banks or credit card agencies can already monitor your spending habits. Pretty much every detail about your life exists somewhere already, and the ID card thing just brings it all together. Its not exactly changing the way we live.

RFID tagging will never allow tracking of movement, even if its high powered, because not only will you require trangulation, recievers cant handle multiple signals being returned to them, and since RFID tags have no processing power and can be blocked by wearing tinfoil, I'm pretty sure no one would be silly enough to suggest it as a means of tracking.

An as has been said, Automatic Recognition isnt a bad thing if it stops people being silly on the roads. Oh and the USA already has the power to tap phones so theres nothing new their either. I dont agree with ID cards just now since the plan to hold data on a centralised server (duh!), but theres nothing inherantly wrong with them.

These are the categories of information they will hold about you.

What I think people find frustrating about you Joor, and the reasons why you continuously gett accused of being a bit of a loon, is how you get from that list, to everyone being spied on constantly.

Do you honestly think they care about what you do that much? I think not.

My only objection to ID cards is that the costs may end up spiralling.

He can see things , you cant ...
He cares, he use his brain to understand whats behind , you dont, or u cant...

Why would we want to stop having an identity?

Everytime u use your credit card,u use your name, you are being tracked. That you want from life?
Anytime , they know where you are , and can kill you.
Makes you like all other ppl , u are afraid to move on in your life.

Did you know , how many great scientists , have killed coz they found out , how to create free energy?
Why they are dead now? Coz they wanna control you with electric power.
