wtf? the ds, what year was that? but thats prove that people want a different gaming experience. ie the wii

that could be relative to stock, statistics are generally useless without context
The artical is December 2006 sales in the US with todate sales and you are right short supply of Wii could be the reason it sold 600 000 unit is december. I had no idea the DS was that popular but after a look on play woolworths ect around Christmas it did seem sold out :)

I think they will be ok :)

PS2 was the second best selling Console in december after the DS (US Numbers)

And if the Xbox only had 500 000 units for Christmas last year if the ps3 has sold 600 000 dose that not mean so far it is selling better in the US at least ;)

Every 360 from the initial batch was sold out in 1 day, you couldn't find a 360 on the shelves until March because they had 2 million plus pre-orders to fill. The PS3 shipped 1.1 million units to North America and did NOT sell out instead sold 700,000 or so and there are now tons of PS3 sat in stores all across America going unsold. There are hundreds if not thousands of PS3 for sale on Ebay that are going onsold. You get the point here? Xbox 360 was completely sold out for nearly 5 months, the PS3 hasn't sold out so far. Microsoft were selling them faster than they could make them, Sony have 300,000 units plus gathering dust in shops across North America.

As for PS2, they make buttons on that hardware now, litterly $5 a unit so they aren't going to be turning in big profits with that and as well as the PS2 is still selling the licencing fees for games are not going to go a long way towards offsetting the losses on PS3 at the moment. Sony are facing a a severe profits drop this year if not going back into the red again.

And you took my post to seriously :) I know they have not sold out but at twice the price of the consoles befor them i wonder if sony expect them too, And also if sony are really making a $100 loss per console they they just just make more of a loss not less profit ;)

I just think the whole issue is getting silly if people want a PS3 the price dose not matter and if Sony start marjeting it to the MediaCenter market maybe it will start shifting boxes. For now if you want one you will buy one and if you really think its overpriced for what you get you will not.

What are the figures for sales in the Japan China market like? Also if you belive the analist who cry doom and gloom they think it could sell well in the european market, We will not know untill its been out every where for a year if it really will hurt Sony or america was just slow starting on it.

I agree sony aren't doing aswell as Microsoft, and as said, I prefer my 360 to my ps3 due to the games, however that'll change this year.

Admitedly a tad pointless buying a ps3 now..

I am talking about Sony as a whole company, PS3 is dragging profits down heavily and with sales estimates being slashed they are going to have to revise thier earnings data for the stock markets. They may well end up in the red this year because of all those units sat on store shelves. Why you ask? Think of it this way, it costs them $600 a unit to make and they have to spend that money to get the unit into shops so that money is gone. They need to sell the unit or they are $600 down, if it sells they are only $100 down due to the hit they are taking on hardware subsidisation. That is why having consoles unsold is very damaging for Sony, they have a about 300,000 units sat on store shelves instead of bringing in revenue they are tying revenue up. All this at the buisiest time of time of the year and PS3 sales are not strong, infact they have been very very slow in the last fortnight and Sony is now producing far more units than they can currently sell. That is a whole heap of cash tied up in unsold stock, of course they will sell given time but that is not my point.

The point is that Sony's profits are being squeezed to death by the slow sales of PS3 and the knock on effect of having very little software which means not alot of money coming in from licences. Game consoles live or die by the licence revenues they generate, it is what made the original Playstation such a phenomenon because Sony turned huge profits from the licencing fees alone. If PS3 doesn't have many games as is the case right now and they don't have alot of potential customers as is also the case then the licencing revenue is only a fraction of what it should be. Simply put, having consoles going unsold is killing Sony's potential earnings and hence any potential profits. Now I agree it isn't a long term thing but it is going to put a serious dent in Sony's bottom line this year and Sony are having a hard enough time in the consumer electronics market as it is without having to take extra unexpected losses on PS3.

You see what I am getting at now?

One more thing, having unsold units only 2 months after launch is bad for public perception as well. The media have picked up on the less than stellar sales and that vibe gets passed along to consumers which only slows sales further. All the games industry news sites are running this story and are in agreement that it isn't going to be good news financially for Sony this quarter and perhaps for the whole fiscal year.

I do agree with you sony have not set the world alight with its sales at the moment. But give it a chance if the analists are right europe will be a big market may be we will pick up the slack for slow american sales. Maybe sales in America will pick up now christmas is over. Its like you said earlier in the thread its speculation. I just do not think after 3 months in which it has not yet been released worl wide its too early to speculate sony will have big problems over this. Who knows if sales stay low they may even drop the price or change the plans and release games on dvd and sell a ps3 basic its all speculation :)

I am worried about the lack of games though the 360 did not come out with lots or great games but that seemed to me MS were in a push to get that released asap where as the PS3 has been in production long enough for them to have came to market with a good range of games.

Bottom line from me on this is yes i see they could be in trouble if the japan/china and european markets do not start picking up the slack of the states. But even if they do flop i will still want one for a streming media box and blu ray player for under £500 that plays my ps2 games :)

Hehe i have just read Stuffs review on the PS3 and as well as saying the UK will only have the Premium version?? It also says it has quiet operation :)

Also Sony have said they will have fixed the firmware to upscale dvds and old games for UK release dates Link

Stuff said:
The UK will only be getting one version of the PS3 – the all-singing premium one. It has a removable 60GB hard-drive, built-in Wi-Fi and a selection of memory-card slots to go along with the standard Blu-Ray drive, Ethernet connection and HDMI port. As this list shows, the PS3 isn’t a console – it’s a full-on media centre.

This helps explain why the unit is so massive. A shoulder-to-shoulder comparison surprisingly revealed that it’s not actually any bigger than the Xbox 360, but you do get an extra kilo of console. Not that this is a drawback – the sleek PS3 is easily the better looking of the two and, unlike its foe’s house-brick adaptor, it has a neat internal power supply.

There are plenty of other alluring touches too. Once you’ve got over the lack of an HDMI cable in the box – only component and Scart are supplied – you’ll coo over the way the PS3 silently sucks discs into its midst, fiddle with the touch-sensitive power button and remark about how incredibly quiet it is in operation. Immediately, it makes its foes look decidedly last-gen.

Even the UK’s much derided March release date now seems a blessing in disguise. Sony has promised firmware fixes that will let it upscale old games and DVDs to HD – something that’s currently beyond the console – and create universal backwards compatibility.

If American's en masse aren't willing to pay the high price then what leads you believe that European's are going to be willing to pay an even higher price? You do know that Sony are going to be charging E.U. customers more than the American's right? With America being the richest nation in the world and thier citizens having more disposable income that almost any other nation what leads you believe that citizens from less wealthy nations are going to be willing to pay a higher price than thier American counterparts? Just because you are and lots of Sony fans are doesn't mean the massmarket will be so willing to be stung by such a high price and having to pay more than any other region in the world for the same hardware.

As for 360 release titles, they had a damn sight better line up than PS3 and I can name them if you really want to get down to the nitty gritty.

why not just get it imported if the later firmware is universal game compatible?
surely that means it doesnt have the limitation of the current version

I do not know if the europeans will buy it more but it was in one of the links i think i read here the american analist said europe spends more money on gadgets and are more likly to have the hi def tv needed to make the ps3 a shine.

She belives that is a major problem in the states they see the ps3 as costing $2600 as you need hi def to watch blurays :)

And the line up for europe that naffets posted dose not look too bad

Power supply issues bud, that and the fact you have no warranty the second you import a Sony console. Rips the piss huh? :(

I like your thinking :)

Soze, we are comparing apples to apples here bud. Only a couple of those games were out for the American and Japanese launch, half of them are also Xbox 360 ports. You can't class 80% of those games as launch titles just because Europe got buttfucked on the console release date. The PS3 launched in November 2006 and it's launch lineup was the shits apart from Resistance.

Yes, worldwide warranty. I could take my 360 to America if I was moving there and Microsoft would still honour the warranty. I had this confirmed when a friend of my sisters moved to Canada in November, I flashed a hacked firmware on his 360 before he went and he was worried about warranty coverage anyway so called Microsoft to confirm the warranty would be valid in a different region. They said it would as long as he kept his receipt and could provide a vaild serial number.

Sony on the other hand have blocked all grey imports and will not fulfill warranty on imports because they class these imports as illegal which they recently stated in court against Lik-Sang. Sadly the judge agreed. :(

You are right.

Looks like i will buying a game i finished on my 360 and another need for speed for my ps3. If its true that the firmware for UK release will upscale though that could have been worth the wait :)

I assume so from stuff mag on the last page :)

Even the UK’s much derided March release date now seems a blessing in disguise. Sony has promised firmware fixes that will let it upscale old games and DVDs to HD – something that’s currently beyond the console – and create universal backwards compatibility.

Ok, let me break this down for you.

PS3 has no hardware scaler, Sony omitted one for a couple of reasons. First was cost, PS3 hardware costs were going through roof and they had to cut corners somewhere, the scaler was considered to be surplus to requirements and ditched. Secondly, the reason they saw it as surplus to requirements was that they wanted the console to progressive scan only and 1080i didn't really fit into the picture.

That was thier first mistake right there, you see ever since 2003 Sony were selling Bravia TV's as HDTV that ONLY supported 1080i, now you see the problem? PS3 games run as either 1080p or 720p and 1080i doesn't really come into the equation, they made a console that wouldn't work well on over 3 million of the HDTV's they shipped since 2003. The console would see the TV didn't support 1080p or 720p and so it defaulted to 480p, not a great idea when you bought a PS3 and HDTV on the understanding that they were both high definition capable. A major boo-boo by Sony there, many thousands of PS3 owners are now stuck watching thier PS3 in crappy 480p on 2004 Bravia TV's because the PS3 lacks a hardware scaler to either scale either a 720p or 1080p picture to 1080i. I am sure you would be pissed Soze if you had paid all that money for a high definition TV and PS3 and were stuck at a really low resolution because Sony saved themselves $10 by leaving a hardware scaler out.

So, Sony have been searching for a fix these last 2 months because the gaming and entertainment media in America have been slaughtering them over lack of proper 1080i support. Now we have the fix and what a crock of shit it is, a firmware fix (hack would be closer to the mark) that forces the graphics chip to resize each frame to 1080i after rendering internally at 1080p/720p. Now you may ask why that makes it a crock of shit? Well the graphics chip has enough work to do as it is, now it has to act as a pseudo scaler something has to give and that something is framerate performance in games. Of course you haven't read much about this yet because the firmware isn't live but mark my words right now, those people with 1080i only Bravia sets are going to be getting shitty game performance once this firmware goes live. From shit low res qualiy to shit gaming performance in one simple firmware upgrade, all to save Sony $10.

It gets worse, Sony are already rumoured to be working on adding a hardware scaler for version 2 of the PS3 now that Blu-Ray costs are easing off. This probably means machines made next winter will have a hardware scaler, great for those customers who buy the consoles then but crap for the Sony Bravia 1080i TV owners who will never get true high performance high definition gaming from their PS3 because Sony cut corners and ended up shafting thier loyal customers.
