Interesting to see Sonys side of things for the PS3 apparently it is not longer a games consol it is a Computer to rival the media center pcs. http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=10122

In fact, SCE chief executive Ken Kutaragi told Japanese computer magazine PC Watch in June 2006 that the PS3 is a computer, not a game console. Kutaragi was quoted as saying "we don't say it's a game console, the PS3 is clearly a computer unlike PlayStations so far." In other words, Kutaragi no longer sees the PlayStation brand centered on a specific hardware configuration that has a life of five to seven years, during which time that hardware is steadily reduced in price as production becomes more efficient. Kutaragi views the PS3 as a computer platform that evolves with new features and capabilities on a constant basis. Kutaragi was further quoted as saying "Since PS3 is a computer there are no 'models' but configurations. We'll want to upgrade the hard drive size very soon. If new standards appear on the PC, we will want to support them. We may want the Blu-ray drive to write. In the PC business, if you fix the spec for two years you'll be caught by competitors. Computers should be changing, right? It's inevitable that 60GB hard drive will become too small, and memory may become too small as well."

The problem with that computer strategy is that it means prices do not come down. By fixing its hardware standard for several years, video game console systems have been able to significantly lower prices over time by not having to upgrade to the latest technology. Kutaragi has also talked about what he sees in common between the PS3 and current Apple Computer philosophy and products. There is clearly a little envy behind such quotes from Kutaragi like: "If Mr. Jobs adds an Apple logo to the PS3, I think users will say it can be sold at $2,000. However it's not possible for the PlayStation brand. That is the difference in the computer world between the PlayStation brand and the Apple brand."

Looks like they think Sonys future hangs on the ps2 out selling the 360 for market share not good reading for Sony Fanbois

Main problem with the ps3 is availability and price. Once you get your hands on one and don't care about price they're uber.

Oh.. and lack of a killer games lineup, far too few decent games for it at the moment.

All in all its a slick console though, cool and quiet for the most part as the case is practically one big vent.

Plenty of availablity in America, just not selling out. Price is what has held alot of people back, that an a ton of competition from a much much cheaper Wii.

i pre ordered a wii and it was sold 1 week later .. and yes i tryed the games not just the free sports one .. i had zelda / red steel / call of duty 3 / monkey ball / rayman

it is just a gamecube with a fancy controler .. and tbh the controler isnt all its cracked up to be its way to hard to get good control over it the same as a joypad/handheld controler

360 is just amazing but i think the ps3 will really rock ...

been a lots people saying you dont need more than 4gig for a good game etc .

the cost may well mean it never really gets anywhere near in as many homes as ps1 or 2 and that means less money invested into the games imo

I read over the weekend that ebay resellers and Sony giving more stock than promised for accounts for some of the stock. Apparently alot of people pre ordered it tried to sell it on ebay could not and so did not claim the pre order leaving the store with a unit they could not sell for 1 or 2 months. And Sony supplied 1 million units pre christmas which is twice as many as they had said and twice the amount of 360s supplied pre christmas.

But you are right the price is high for a Consol, but now its offically a Media PC with a games consol added its cheap at $600

Gabe Newell, top man at Valve and developer of Half Life 2 really takes a swing at Sony over the PS3, was shocked to read something this blunt from a major developer to be honest.

If I want to sit down and game seriously then nothing will ever beat a PC. Consoles are what i'd use to chill out on for 15 mins or on when i've got less gaming minded mates over. The controller for the Wii gives it a much more party feel instead of a sitting down gaming sesh feel, which is what consoles are really all about.

I bet he will still design games for at and in time will get used to it and love it. I think from reading what the guy at Sony said its tough it cant be as easy as a normal consol because of what they want it to do But im not a game designer so maybe they cant get used to it

I'll be getting a PS3, mainly for the FF series, aswell as some other okay rpg's. I found the majority of the PS2 games rather dull, and don't expect the PS3 to bring anything particulary original, but FF13 looks rather interesting, and FF12 will still be on PS2, iirc.

would never lower myself to getting a console just to have it be useless after a year so i'd have to spend twice of what the last console costed to get a better one.

That's like the main reason I'd be going for console, because you DON'T have to upgrade every other month to keep your console in line. You spend a couple hundred euro's/pounds at start, and then just pay for the games you feel like getting. You don't need to buy a new 400 euro videocard every year to get the fanciest graphics, etc.
So, basicly, your comment made fuck all sense to me.

Oh, and I'd wish Sony would stop whoring for cash, as the PS2 was the most expensive console out there, along with the most expensive games (70 euro's, while Xbox was 60 and NGC was 50, at the time), and accesorries, etc. And now the PS3 seems to be just as expensive :<

Peak usage it may be a little louder, however on average (90% of the time) I've found it to be quieter.

Don't care what that site says, its been criticised loads for publishing that info. Oh and the wii doesn't have a hard drive..

The twin 60 mil fans in the 360 spin up loads, my ps3 is practically silent most of the time.

rofl good way to describe it. thats what mine is like.

though once you got the 5.1 on, the bass boost on, the floors are shaking, pictures flying off the wall, you dont really notice it anymore.

ok, then u can try and play FF13 on a PS2 while i try to play the newest PC games on my 2 year old PC. because u see, i can do that while u cant on a console. so if u want to play the newest console games, ur forced to buy the latest console while the PC users can still manage with a several year old PC, maybe not getting the fanciest grafic, but we can still play it. you on the other hand, cant on your old consoles.

and you dont have to have the "best of the best" grafic card to get the full grafic on the PC games. i'm doing perfectly fine on my old 6800GT.
