Ahh X2, a fine game indeed, if you liked Elite you'll love this. Bigger scale, great graphics and great gameplay... it's as complex as you could want it.. so much depth and things to strive for.. I really enjoy it :)

Hopefully these links will answer all questions you have :)

I installed this a while ago, but never really got into it ... not that the game was at fault, I just didn't have the time... (takes ages jumping between places)...however, I did spend years playing Frontier which has equally long jumps between systems...(didn't really play Elite that much)...does look good though...

: /

...I'm waiting for Elite 4...still under construction?

I got this as soon as it was out in the UK.

First thing, the manual is UTTER CRAP, you HAVE to go read up stuff on the forums and associated fan sites to have any real clue about how things works and what you should and shouldn't do at the start.

Me? I went and did the first 3 missions and then setup a Solar Power Plant. All well and good, but I didn't know the Khaak would be coming to play and they decided to do so in the system with my SPP. No NPC capital ships in the sector, so no way to get rid of them (would have taken me AGES to setup in another system again and get enough money for decent ship(s) to take them on). Anyway, that lead to me restarting and using a different sector next time.

The ship to ship combat can be somewhat annoying too. The AI is programmed such that it will only turn away from ramming you at the very last moment, and it only succeeds if you're going very slow yourself. You can easily start losing ship upgrades from this even when you have some shields left. Most annoying, but I think I'm getting the hang of avoiding the ramming now.

Of course you CAN decide to cheat and hit one of the scripting sites for stuff that will speed up progress in the game. I've resisted doing this so far, the most cheaty I've gotten is taking peoples' advice about SPP location and starting on Easy (the start ship has more upgrades which on the whole means you have more money) mode rather than Normal. Oh and I've not done the "sell the equipment from the temporary ship in mission 2" thing either, which is popular as it nets you something like 300K credits (instant SPP basically).

If someone wants to create a sub-forum for X2 I'll be along to rant about it daily probably :p.

judging from the demo I'd say both. btw, what rez and settings do you people run this at? if I run the rolling demo at 1024x768x32 with AA, shadows and bumps all on I get reasonable (shite) performance averaging at ~40fps (call it 25). if I leave AA and shadows off I get ~80 average with the penalty of less eyecandy and jaggies. I like it though....must buy :D

Requires a beefy machine, I ran the rolling demo without AA on and it was pretty speedy at 1280 (9800 pro / 3200+). I'll re-run it with AA on and I shall post results.

TBH, I think stencil shadows (a lá quake3) look shit, imo of course.

If you have a second screen and NVIDIA nView compatible graphics card (ATI won't work) then you can in fact play multi-monitor with your cockpit on one screen and the cameras/other info on the other. I had a tinker this weekend and was most impressed. You'll need the retail game and 1.1 patch to use it tho.

It averaged 39.4 fps with 1280*1024, 4xAA and 8xAniso (all the goodies on, shadows etc).

Bits of it ran about 60 fps, but other bits kinda died to about 10 fps (the big battle bit of the demo).

Roll on R420 and PCIe.

The simulation mode is a good place to learn. Just doing it now and im very impressed with it all. Runs really nice (not perfect) with everything whacked up to full, in 1280x1024 (no aa or aniso) on my ti4400 and p4 2.8c.

I read the story was the weakest part of the game, i mean for gods sake the aliens are called Khaak.

Bollocks, I had a long post written out and "server busy" ate it. Cba now. I'll paraphrase....

X2? Good game, turn Khaark off for a while, voice acting = embarrassing translated from German shit. Gifv M1 \o/

One thing to be aware of is that neither the 'rolling demo' nor the tutorial will give a REAL indication of how well the game itself runs. The reason for this is all the NPC ships and factories, and later your own of such. Even though it obviously isn't rendering anything you can't see it IS doing calculations on them all constantly. Thus there's an extra suckage on the CPU that the rolling demo and tutorial don't have.

I'm still on an Athlon XP 1600+@1.4GHz, 768MB PC2100 DDR RAM and a GF4ti4800 128MB on Win XP Pro, and it runs 'ok', but does get a bit slide showey in the busier sectors. Definitely time for that upgrade 'soon'.

The story is a joke, the cutscenes are horrendous and the combat leaves a lot to be desired, also the interface sucks.

But this game is great :)

The trading is pretty advanced, and setting up your own trading empire is quite satisfying. I was a bit disappointed that you couldn't fly any of the larger battleships yourself, but even the fact that you can control hundreds of stations and ships makes this game way more advanced than the competition.

I haven't finished the storyline yet, just mucking about with trading. When I do the storyline, I want to do it with a fleet :)

P.S You can dock by targetting the station then shift+d, you don't have to do it manually all the time, and once inside press esc to skip the actual docking. Lot's of little things like that should have been in the manual :/

Yeah, what Rulke said. The manual is laughable, so much so that i think it's worth reiterating tha advice to visit the official forums and have a good read :)

I'd agree that the dialogue and voice acting is abysmal and I'd also agree that the manual is woefully inadequate. The Elite manual had detailed specs of ships and weapons so at least you knew what you could save up for. None of that here and as someone up there said, it is practically essential that you go in search of online, fan-made resources.

Trading and economy is great, and I'd also say that the combat is the best I've seen in a space game. The menu interface is a little clunky but you get used to it.

Freespace 2 rocked ... it was fun not to have the capital ships not just sit there like er, great big things hanging in space getting shot at.

Warngin though: demo seemed to chug a bit on my radeon 9600, plus enabling EAX seemed to make the game hang for a few moments, at random.

Been playing X2 a smidge recently. With Mikeybears and grannys help I opted out of the scripted battles against the Khaak (yeah, i know i know...) and have been playing a purely trading game (except for the pirates and Xenon) and I gotta say its seriously good.
The economy seems to work pretty well and theres enough toys and upgrades to keep an obsessive happy for yonks. I'm currently building up a fleet of destroyers to take on the Khaak someday (by turning off the script that gets rid of them).

Yes, its a bit of a machine eater and can get into 3D-Jerkovision at the drop of a hat, and the manual would be laughable if its omissions werent so serious, and the cut scenes and voice acting are the WORST you'll see for years, but its still just so good.

If you want to fly around in a beautifully rendered space, in a host of ships, and build space stations and own entire fleets (any of which you can fly yourself) then get the fucking game.
Just bought me a Paranid Odysseus M2 destroyer for 63million credits and the bugger came with NO guns. Nearly finished equipping it and the guns have cost me 30mill on their own so far. However, just parked it outside a pirate space station and shouted rude words through the letter box and had to stick the guns on fire at will as i was laughing so much at the reaction.

Do we really want an X2 forum here? Happy to fire one up if theres enough interest.

Oh, by the way, sorry for my prolonged absense (as if anyone gives a shit), work and RealLife™ intrudes.

Oh you swine. I'm saving my arse off to buy an M2, but I'll probably cave and get a Corvette once I have enough money. I've got a Solar Power Plant and a Wheat Farm and have just set up a Silicone Mine in Split space. Thing is, I destroyed the Silicon Mine that was already there (with just an Argon Nova kitted out with an Ion Disruptor, Hornet Missiles and Beta HEPT - have to eliminate the competition, natch) and so now I'm a Split enemy and can't trade in nearby systems. :(

It's going to take a lot of pirate and Xenon killing to get back on good terms with them.

This must read like utter tripe to people who've never played this. :/

And welcome home! :)
