WW2: Online

WW2: Online is a massive multiplayer online simulation of combat in the second world war. Imagine thousands of people fighting over accurately modelled European terrain using realistic weapons and vehicles.

The graphics aren't the most stunning ever, but they certainly do the job;

An Allied bomber comes under fire from a Flak cannon;

An Allied scout comes under fire from a German platoon with support from three Panzer IVs and Radio command car;

A German platoon assualt on foot an axis held farmhouse;

Unlike Planetside tactics play a massive role with both Axis and Allied having a command structure, each of whom arrange attacks in a variety of forms. Whether it be a concerted Axis artillery bombardment of Allied defenders in Antwerp, or a 60 bomber run on the Axis held city of Hannut. Currently fighting is taking place across the heartland of Belgium, up to Holland and down as far as Luxembourg.

If you'd like to try it out you can signup for a 7 day trial here and grab the install files from here; for the browser intergration plugin and here; for the client itself. If anyone does feel like trying it out keep an eye out for me; SABunnyX (normally Axis) in game.

Heh, I played WW2OL when it first came out, I got the game in its first month (had to wait 2 weeks as it was not available in Europe at first).

Great game, being part of a 30 strong force attacking a town was amazing.

I have no idea how the game has progressed since I left about a year ago, but it needed to learn from Battlefield 1942, which is a similar game but more of an "arcade" version and less historically accurate.

I tried it out last time they had a 7 day trial, but there was an awful lot of spawn camping going on then.

I finally got to fly in a plane and try shooting some people down. Was great fun. I think I actually hit some guy :D

Planetside needs loads of fast RAM - I, for example, hardly ever have any lag.

I had set myself up for WW2Online for months before it was out and was terribly disappointed... bugs galore, crap graphics, loooong downtimes etc.

But hey... if it's better now. Will give it a try.
SABunnyX - that's a good German name btw. like Schmidt or Maier. :p

Well, my considered opinion was to cancel my subscription in the end, and forget about the whole thing.
At least this is a free trial so I may well give it a go. You'll know if you see me Scoob, my name will be .... throdgrain :)

The servers are in the States, but so far the only lag you get is when entering a new area. The game DLs the surrounding terrain for about 15 miles from your point menaing the first 30 seconds are laggy.

Yes, the game started out buggy, but recently I've not had a crash for a ew weeks except for a known bug with shadows.

Even when I was playing a year back with ISDN it was not what I would call laggy, the game mechanics are very well done.

Also consider the game is a true "twitch" FPS, the only one of its kind AFAIK, unlike most other MMOGs that are skill-based combat with little interaction or aiming needed.

Some questions:

1. Did they ever implement the Battlefield 1942 style of vehicle acquisition, i.e. you spawn a soldier then get inside the vehicle when it spawns, or do you still spawn as the vehicle and die when it does ?

2. Has it moved on from France 1940, i.e. are there more vehicles and weapons ?

3. Have they implemented vehicle loadouts ?

4. Have they implemented proper supply routes ? And can you be re-supplied in the field (other than return to base or respawn).

5. Have they changed grenades to how they should be or are they still "explode on impact" ?

6. Is there a "roleplay" aspect now, i.e. do you get promotions and what do they affect ?

7. Is there a "tactical map" for the generals ?

1) You still spawn vehicles when you start

2) The war does progress giving more vehicles and weapons, see 4

3) Vehicle loadouts are restricted to choices between various ammunition types.

4) Supply lines are in effect. The game works on a cycle, with a reset when a side surrenders to the opposition. At the beginning of a 'war' both sides can only spawn basic vehicles, however, in major cities each faction has a factory which when at 80% damage or above outputs 'RPD'. When enough rpd have been output high command can change what vehicles and weapons can be spawned. Currently it takes a week of all factories at full efficiency to output enough RPD to allow a change, however that can be changed by either bombing strikes or capturing the cities.

5) Grenades still explode on impact.

6) The extent of the RP is that people 'play' the command of each faction.

7) As far as I know Generals have access to the same map as a normal soldier with the adition of marked approxiamte positions for each unit.

Anyone else use an inverted mouse in fps's, and can they get it to work in WW2: Online?

I have checked the box on the keymapper, but it doesn't seem to have any effect.

They are totally different games, comparing them is slightly stupid, especially as ww2:eek:nline has about a million times the depth of Planetside.

I wanted to play WWII online but I don't like the movement, if it was more like BF1942 (by this I mean you move your mouse the sights move, you stop your mouse the sights stop) then I would be more inclined to play it,.

I usually play with mouse and keyboard I find it annoying that the object I'm controlling continues to move until i move the mouse in the opposite direction to slow it down.

Shame as it looks like it could be quite a fun game to play.

I have downloaded the game.

I must say the pictures you have shown kind of make the game actually seem good, which is strange because it it infact crap.

The people who play ww2 online seem to be stuck in a realm of what time forgot.

they belive the graphics are still ahd of their time and ww2 is still the best masive multi player game out there.

Does it now? i tend to disagree, i have noticed that ww2 online sports perhaps the worst controlls i have ever played with on a first persona game.

Add to this the fact that to my knowledge there is no sniper rifle, medic or engineer etc...

And also the fact that it is impossible to scuttle a veichle, so say when you have had enough, you cannot leave it. erm, there is a squad system in the game, however it seems very dodgy.

(End of emotionless rant)

Protip; firing a gun isn't anything like pointing and clicking, instead it's much more like swinging around an object with mass, which is exactly what the game sets out to do. In case you're still unable to read, it's a SIMULATION.

Tank commanders don't jump out of their vehicles as long as they still work, hence you are unable.

There is a sniper rifle (Those 3 seconds you spent trying it out must have been real in depth), however there's no medic or engineer because you can't recover people's heath by punching them in the face with a box with a red cross on, just as a Tank can't be repaired by hitting it with a spanner.

Anyway, for the non retarded, next patch will feature the first damage model for vehicles, you'll be able to shoot tracks out on tanks and the model will represent this instead of just simulating the effect.

Tank commanders dont jump out of their viechles as long as they still work?

wouldnt it be a good idea to give the player the option of jumping out or not, instead of simply not allowing it?

i cant belive your bullshit, i asked in the ingame chat about this sniper rifle of yours and it doesnt exist.

95% of the time all you do is spawn into a town, and shoot 2 or 3 germans soldiers who keep spwani9ng every ten seconds untill one of you takes the city or small village, as they should be called :)

i can tell the only other game you have played is TFC so i wont go into the medic or engineer thing because it seems a monkey doesnt understand.

and the bullets also seem to travel to their targets instantly, i mean if its a simulation.....

Oh< and for some reason the nades explode on impact, which is a wee bit strange........

the plans fly like shit aswell.

1) Email the designers, that's their stance not mine.

2) I was shot last night twice by snipers, perhaps they were hackers who'd cheated this gun into the game?

3) You seem unaware that you are taking part in an ongoing campaign, the gains you make on foot are reflected in not only the locations you can spawn, but also the production that your side can acheive.

4) Muhh? Please point out where in WW2 or even now Medics did ANYTHING other than to staunch bleeding, reset bones and give painkillers. A wound is a wound is a wound and it's not realistic giving someone a box that fixes said wound instantly. Exactly the same for vehicles, engineers generally don't fix battle damaged vehicles in the field, instead they are shipped off to behind the lines, surely a monkey can understand that..... (oh snap!)

5) Play more, bullets don't travel instantly and you have to lead virtually everything except pointblank.

6) Grenades exploding on impact I'd already acknowledged

7) The flight engine is incredibly realistic, perhaps you've been spoilt by playing games in which flying involves pressing the forwards button.

Not much of a simulation though

The grenade theory was simply an addition to my point that this game is shit.

And another thing......

As soon as a town has been taken, 90% of people simply quit the game and respawn into another place where the is so-called fighting going on.
