A guy at my old work explained this to me its the ratification or something. The goverment will not sign it off and let people sell it untill a percentage of the country can get it and every operator that wants too can sell it. Like the Monopoly Comission helping us again.

BT invented ADSL by the time they were allowed to sell 512 k they had invented 8mb but could not sell it as they were the only ones that could or something like that.

In short its the goverments fault

Our phonelines in the UK are so old and slow that they cant support high speed connections, especially if you out in the sticks.

People like the Koreans and the Japanese saw Broadband etc coming, so they upgraded all their telephone lines, and thus they have things like 60 mb connections, for half the price that we get our 1-2meg connection and such.

yeah and thats why on this old slow technology a new bit of kit is release that lets broadband go further. From what your saying you seem to belive still if your 800 yards from the exchange you get nothing. But with ADSL2 you can be 2 miles away and get 2mb. While fiber to every house would be faster the technology is there to get everyone the internet over a phone line.

Bingo. Even though BT have already got the fibre/cable lines ready, they wont do it unless alot of people want it. It'll cost them too much to replace the copper lines.

True.dat, but still, In London you have more of a chance of getting a better connection than say... I don't know out in the sticks, cos BT invested some money into the wires cos of the business etc here.

But they really should re-think the current frame structure, it wasn't made to have so many wires being re-wired to different equipment and you can see in some London exchanges the frame dips under the weight of so much wiring..The more these old frames are used, the harder it will be to upgrade :/

21cn network does not mean fibre, it means all calls being routed over VOIP.

I can see BT's view on this they lose millions of customers a year to cheap providers but none of them have to look after any infastucture BT do it all. So if every home needed fiber (except cable) BT would have to do it all even for the customers BT have lost. No Way will they do that for free now they do not get goverment money there is no chance.

i only have 2mb in the sticks (pay for "up to 8") though would much rather live in the country with 2mb than a stinking city on 8/10/20 whatever

used to live about 50 meters from the exchange when i lived down south on 10 mb

was chatting to the BT bloke that came round to re-wire our house (it had 1960s phone lines before) and he was saying that most places like this wont get decent internet speeds for a very long time because it is just not viable to make profit, unless the government actually put their hands into their pocket then we will just have to live with it.

AT&T were planning on setting up extra charges to soak up even more money than they make because so much internet activity flows through their servers.

If this is pulled off worldwide then AT&T will have absolutely no grounding to stand on with these extra charges!

As a BT 'worker' I can tell you the great slow monolith is finally starting to get it's act together.
I 'm working on their new ip based network and it will be quick, the kit is the latest stuff from the Finns and the Chinese/ Japanese, everyone will have adsl as standard and it will be adsl2, so expect speeds up to 24mb if you are in a town and 12mb even on a long line.
You will be offered even faster speeds, but let's get real here, it's the whole network that counts between you and the far end.
There are a few thousand people in Wales who are connected to the new network, though they probably don't know it.
The kit is called Media gateways so you can guess where they're going with it all, basicall BT is building their own UK based Super Internet so you can download huge files without it all creakin to a halt, except it will be their movie/Tv media, no bittorrent here guys.

BT expect to get dedicated (Non end user) users without allowed torrents? The majority of the people who WANT anything >1mb will download torrents.. It's logical. XD

they already restrict torrent downloads most of the time, if i leave something DLing overnight i can usually get a few gig downloaded, for the same time period in the evening i can probably DL about 200 meg by torrent

fat luck getting anything even remotly close to this in real life anytime soon, or at all.

to get speeds like that one would have to rebuild the *entire* internet structure. and thats never ever going to happen. all the countries in the world would just sit there and bitch about who owns what line that needs a upgrade. quite possibly even start WW3
