We had width in Barnes, Waddle and Beardo I guess. We have no width at all now, no true wingers but also no midfielders who can run at opponents with pace and actually beat them.

Beardsley was good at finding space and feeding Lineker, didn't score many himself and got the sort of hate that Heskey gets now. We also had Gascoigne's ability to beat a man and find a player in a white shirt and Platt making late runs into the box. Christ knows how many he'd score if he played for Chelsea in Lampard's position, much better finisher.

Yet that team in 1990 had its problems, it grew over the tournament and was quite lucky with some of the opposition it had to face. Belgium and Cameroon? I'd like to think even the current England could have beaten them.

The current England squad needs to be dismembered and rebuilt for the future. We also need to stop picking players on reputation and because they play for a "big club". Lampard and Terry should be sent packing for two.

The same Cameroon that beat Argentina (eventual finalists) Romania, Colombia and we only just managed to defeat them in our 1/4 finals with a late penalty in extra time - iirc.

I wish that the current squad had played against Ghana instead of Germany, that way when they would have handed us a big defeat, we might have gotten the drastic measures that need to be implemented for improving on the current setup.

Instead we got battered by Germany and some feel that we might not need wholesale changes as this German side was exceptionally talented, when the reality is (not taking anything away from the Germans) that we are so shit :(

Cameroon were very good in that world cup though, hardly a walk over.

I'd fucking love it. No chance Bayern will let him go though, and after the WC he'll be extremely expensive.

Bayern will demand the same for Schweini as they did for Robben and I don't think anyone will pay that amount

Uruguay have been spot on tactically so far. The dutch are really going to have to turn it on and go for this to prevent extra time and penalties I feel.
