I don't really see what there is to keep in order. They have never issued a firmware update for that router, and on the odd occasion when I have had to speak to tech support about it, they didn't know their way around the thing.

It has terrible functionality, and transmits at a pissy 75mw! That gives it an apalling range. Truth be told, I'm not convinced it is a particularly great modem either.
It got updated when I was on Sky. If you know all the components you're dealing with it keeps everything straightforward. You use your own kit = no tec support. As a company it makes sense. For what it's worth I never had any WiFi issues either.

IDnet is looking favourite for me atm, unless something better shows before june. Anything but BT anything..

Broadband, Web Design, Secure Hosting | IDNet

Can I suggest my ISP?
Residential Fibre Broadband Packages | FTTC Packages | FTTC Broadband Packages from Aquiss
The main difference between IDnet and Aquiss that I can see is that Aquiss' allowance is unlimited between midnight to 8.00am weekdays and all day at weekends. IDnet's off-peak is also capped.

You all might want to have a look at this document which shows the proposed rollout of fibre across the country.

The sad truth is that not so long ago we had one of, if not the most advanced telecommunications infrastructure in the world. Sadly we have had a decade or so with pretty much zero investment in it.

Just be glad you don't live in the dreadful Milton Keynes, not only are they possibly the most depressing town in England but to save money when it was built they have aluminium telephone lines instead of copper.

I did look at Aquiss and wondered if that's where the leeches would go, hence my IDnet preference. Since then BT has changed its fup policy, so maybe its more viable.
BT bins fair usage policy

The roll out dates document is a guide, mine was due in Dec then March but now June.

My exchange is enabled and I know some local people who have fibre. What BT are doing now is installing the fibre cabs (the green box at the end of your st) BT installed my fibre cab on tuesday its sat next to the old green cab but it's taller. So I expect my June date to change now its installed /hopefully. So if you dont have a taller cab next to your old one, your a while away.

Just to bump this old thread, I am getting BT Infinity installed tomorrow morning, option 2, down 40mb/s up 10mb/s unlimited usage.

The portal reckons I should get 26mb/s down and around 6mb/s up. Let's see....

Sky internet and routers are pretty solid actually, they are pretty much netgear with custom firmware. And the firmware is not bad, had a play on one before and my dad uses skybb 10mb in cornwall.

On the bright side, at least you Brits have it better than the Americans, where dial up is still used in rural areas.

Sky management is normally admin / sky. The user name and password they will not give out is the ADSL information to allow you to swap routers. From what I have noticed they tweak things on the router my connection started at 18mb then the router reset to factory settings and I was getting 20mb and a few months later it reset again and now I get nearly 23mb at top speed. It looks to me like they had made changes and applied them to my router the firmware version appeared to be the same.

Life could be worse, I have to use shared apartment internet (£12 a month). If I want my own internet I have to pay the apartment management £12 a month on top of my ISP Bills! Thiefing fuckers, so i'm stuck with theres, but P2P speed is not bad (300kb/s or so), it's just http (70kb/s :() is shit.

Phone line not working.
2 days spent at home waiting for an engineer to fix the line.

2 days and no sign of an engineer.

Nice one BT! What a great company!
