Probably due to another device using the same channel in the 2.4GHz frequency range wireless (and lots of other stuff including cordless phones) works on, seem if setting the WAP to a different channel fixes it.

Some devices just don't play nice, especially if it's non-networking equipment.

Cordless phones are one of the worst as they cycle through the available bands.

Microwaves are a pain as they emmit at the same frequency.

Use netstumbler or similar to check for competing local wireless networks too.

Sadly though, wifi sucks satans nipples in terms of interoperability and stability. I have problems with it everywhere i go and hate it with a passion! Best solution though is to pay through the nose and get corporate level stuff rather than home, it makes a real difference...
