Windows XP is the new OS coming soon from Microsoft. So, what do you think? Thumbs up or Thumbs down?

(Btw, this is a m00 zone ;))

Bored still

Microsoft are tied to their own market now. They can't release any operating system that is significantly different in terms of design and semantics because they would alienate all the millions of people who are familiar with, or are just getting used to the Windows(tm) environment.

Therefore it follows that any product Microsoft release that bears the word "Windows" in the title will simply be a rehash of what already exists. It will still have rectangular windows, a taskbar (with Start menu) and the usual Windows(tm) widgets we all know and love (checkboxes, option boxes, etc).

In other words - Windows XP will be just like every other Windows-based operating system Microsoft have released to date. It may or may not have some extra fluffy features as yet unseen, or a few elements with different names - but it will still be the old Windows and hence a boring and pointless upgrade.

I agree with Durzel. I've had XP and binned it. It's really a newbies OS, more so than ME.

Its more of a forward step for users of WIN9X than for people like myself who use W2K Pro/Linux.

Win9X is fine for me. Why would I upgrade when I'm this lazy :D

Errrrr, why? I still haven't seen one decent reason to shift from 98se to win2gay. Desktop OSs are not like fashion mate, you don't have to keep up with the latest trends, stick with what you know to work fine for your needs.

I'm still using 98, and it's fine for me. As for XP, well we have the usual crap about people saying "it's an O/S for lamers", "I'm going to use Linux", etc. Course you are. When stuff comes out for XP only, people will upgrade, and realise that they can turn all the faggy stuff off and it will be just like their old copy of 98/2000/whatever, with a couple of extra things thrown in.

Actually I use Win2k and it smacks the shit outta any of the Win 9x variants out there. And to answer your question as to why its simple, m$ are about to essentially take the NT core and slap on a user interface that assumes the user is dumber than your average cabbage. The only thing m$ could do to XP to make it worse IMHO is to slap the office assistant straight onto the desktop.

Why is using the NT core in a new OS that will appeal to the home user bad? Haven't people been shouting about a stable OS for years? When it may come along you all disregard it?

Okay Me was bad but XP should be good, I use 98se and will soon do a dual boot with w2k, but having something like XP would be a lot easier -I dont care how much they dumb it down, you'll be able to turn all the shit off.

Okay I am not a beta tester and can only go by what M$ say on their site, but the pro version of XP sounds good, exactly what i need. Can you guys tell me, not just say its shit, why it is? Luap?

You don't get it do you son...I said "don't fucking change if you don't want to"...who cares what they are doing with/in XP...I won't be changing to it. Let them fuck it up.

*slaps forehead* who cares

Thats fine and I dont have a problem with what u wanna do thats your choice. If I wanna junk m$ and swap to Linux thats mine. However I'm not in the general trend of using software if I think its crap and at the moment IMHO m$ are swerving all there software straight towards Crap central which is a shame when they can produce stuff like Win2k.

btw - If you dont care then why be posting in this thread?

heres my 2p worth ....

win2k is great, fast and stable, well worth the upgrade.

the activation codes in Xp sounds very very stupid to me, but i am sure a crack to turn it off will appear a few days affter its release ....

xp looks pretty horrid imho, but at least ms are trying to create a new cleaner interface, stick you mum in frount of 98 and she wont no where to start, xp on the other hand would at least point her in the right direction.

tbf, ms are slagged off whatever they do, they have stability sorted with 2k and a new interface (for the first time since 98) lined up via xp. so why the slaggings?

PS linux is shite so why all the praise :p

It's apparnt you're retarded Mystic...I quote:

Errrrrm, pardon? Want to make your mind up? The emphasis of my post dear chap, was that you seem to think as soon as XP comes out...your current OS (win2gay) will suddenly cease to work. You seem to think that as soon as XP comes out, you HAVE to either change OS to XP or Linux...wake up son, it's all a bad dream. Your current 2k installation will be fine, honest. The little MS gremlins won't eat it away

If you're going to call someone retarded, at least get your spelling right, eh? ;)

I dunno what to do with you Perplex but once again I'll try to explain.

The flaw in your arguement is that eventually the old OS will lose its support. I dont want to still be using an OS thats full of security holes and instability bugs that there not trying to fix anymore.

btw - Dont use bit quotes and paste them together cos that screws up the meaning.

Okay if we can get away from this personal argument, can some one answer my question -preferebly a XP beta tester or someone with intimate knowledge of OS's.

So Perps, Mystic take your little quibble elsewhere. start a new thread Mystic v Perps.

There's a distinct yet subtle difference between a typo and a spelling mistake. I know how to spell apparent.

Win2k is shit imo. All this talk about it being stable cracks me up. I decided to try it out as the lack of support for NT4 was angering me. 7 crashes in the first 3 days. If I had dodgy hardware compatibility wise I would have understood, but I was on a P3 500, BX motherboard and TNT2u at the time. Throw in the dodgy Voodoo 2 support, the deeply irritating fading menus and the fact that all the useful stuff rom NT4 was hidden in some obscure place, I was deeply unimpressed. 4 days after installing it I junked it and went back to my faithful 98/NT4 dual boot. NT4 rapes 2k stability wise.
