Removing Windows.

I want to nuke my used-once-good-condition-two-bedroom Win98 install, because its taking up valuable space on my system drive. Its installed alongside Win2000, which is the only O/S used.

So, what'dya do? Delete the /Win98/ dir? Remove something from some file so that the DOS-esque thing at startup doesn't ask me which O/S to use?

Give me a clue folks; walk me through it - baby steps styley.
I'd quite like to have more than 18mb free. Indeed.

Try not to make this thread one where you trumpet linux. At least, not until I've deleted win98. Kay?

Best idea TBH there Kenny....

Presuming you've installed 98 on a separate partition (I think you have to don't ya?)

TBH, what I'd do is delete the win98 directory and then go into the boot options on wink2 and tell it not to bother asking for multi boot any more.

No, they're not on different partitions, don't be so stupid. Tsch.

Now. Explain; don't smarm around with your goddamn smilies.

Right click "My computer" and go into properties.

Then click the advanced tab and go into start up and recovery settings. Then it should be obvious.

That's how it is inwinxp and I know it's fairly similar in win2k if not identical.

Well, I deleted the folder. If it fucks up, you'll hear me cry.

Bah save the time

Winkey + Break -> Advanced Tab -> Startup and Recovery -> Untick the "Display Operating Systems" tick box

REBOOT

Navigate to the Win98 folder and delete it.

Its not the cleanest of procedures but it will do. I have two options of WindowsXP to load but only one works.

If you can be bothered you can edit the boot.ini file to sort it out but it will not improve anything

I just nuked my old Windows 98SE box and replaced it with FreeBSD, which on the network connections runs miles better on a sticky little Celeron 433Mhz than 98 did on a Duron 850Mhz :)

I wouldn't use Windoze on any lower powered box, if I had one :)

Personally I would say just back anything important up to a removable disk and just do a fresh install of Win2k. :)

Well, it still boots, without any dirty unintelligable errors, which is all I was really after. Freed up less space than I imagined it would, though.

Thanks!

There might be a page file (very big) in the root of the os installation still, but I'd expect 2000 to reclaim it everytime it booted if they're on the same partition.

Thinking about it, it's a swap file (so 2k wouldn't have touched it) called win386.swp (safe to delete it) if this helps.

Edit - I WISH I COULD SPELL. :(

Personnaly i would backup stuff you want to save and then format. Then reinstall 2k. However i keep my oses on seperate partitions to my data anyway :$

Del windows folder and edit boot.ini.

Need to unhide it and show protected files to see it or just type boot.ini in the run box.

Thing is, if he's installed 98 and then put Win2k on the same partition, the Win2k needs to be in FAT32 rather than NTFS doesn't it ...

Fresh install, go on you know you want to. I don't care if it works ok! :p

With him having 98 yes.

I would also recommend a reinstall, im guessing that os has been on there for some time and has many useless dlls sitting on it that are no use taking up space.

The point about the W2K cache may not be as helpful. However, the Windows 98 Cache - if you had it at a fixed size - will exist as a large file at the root of the Windows 98 partition and could be holding a couple of hundred megs.

I don't use 98 any more so I can't remember the filename, but display "details" and pick out the big one :)

the winn98 directory is just .cab files and setup files copied over from the CD.
Removing it would cause no problems at all
