Has anyone seen the Microsoft Television Advert for Windows XP?

You know the one it has lots of people flying around??

Is it just me or is this advert bulshit. It has no information in it whatsoever, just has some people flying around then the Microsoft XP Logo pops up.

What the f***??

Heheh, since when have Coca-Cola advertised a carbonated drink made from vegetable extract, or Gap actually advertised what their clothes are and what they are made of, or a perfume manufacturer actually told you what their product smells like?

It's a form of advertising called "brand awareness", it got your attention (for whatever reason) therefore it's worked, and therefore not bulshit (sic).

:D

Thier catch phrase at the end of the ad was originally going to be "You can fly" but that was rapidly changed to "Yes you can" after Sept. 11th

XP is brilliant. The best home desktop OS so far by a long, long way.

Can't imagine businesses forking out the extra license cash and replacing below spec PCs for it - they're better off with Windows 2000.

I am thinking of upgrading from Win2k Pro to XP - what are the advantages?

Cheers!

Bloody hell! That's an open question... :/

XP is better at everything and looks pretty. In a nutshell.

You could try here, here or probably the best one here.

I asume you're not actually going to pay for it? Make sure you get the Pro edition and not Home. The only difference is that XP Home is cheaper but has several useful features cut out.

Hum... I'm not convinced. I need to stick with Win2k anyhow as its the same OS as my servers.

That's no reason. You can easily get hold of a legitimate evaluation copy which is the full release (build 2600) licensed for 120 days.

It was included in the most recent TechNet release, if you use that at work.

Yes it is - I need to test my applications on the same platform that they will be implemented on

None. Unless you count spyware as standard, and a much less stable system with less support as advantages.

Oh for God's sake, Waz! Stop spouting the standard anti-XP toss!

The 'spyware' included in XP is Product Activation. That's it. It doesn't transmit ANY personal details and is a reasonable step by MS to (at least try to) prevent piracy.

If you can come up with any more examples I'd be pleased to hear them. The only other gripes I have which could be included in the pathetic 'spyware' category is that XP 'encourages' you to use MSN Messenger, which is easily disabled anyway.

XP is more stable than 2000, even if only a little. It uses the latest implementation of MS's 'Fusion' technology to prevent applications installing older DLL (and other) files, and has enhanced ACPI support.

I seem to remember peeps shouting about 'lack of support' when 2000 came out. Since Logitech released the XP version of their iTouch software a week ago, my system is now fully XP compatible. An XP-compliant version of ZoneAlerm has even been released. And XP isn't even out yet. Give the slower hardware/software houses a month to catch up and there'll be no support problems. You'll find most 2000 drivers will work comfortably on XP, it being simply the next version of 2000.

I'm willing to bet you've never actually tried using XP for an extended period of time. There's plenty in there to keep everything stable (and pretty too! :)) including Event Viewer hyperlinks to TechNet articles, System Restore (better than WinMe implementation) easy Compatibility Mode (amend an apps shortcut properties to have it running under virtual Win95, 98, Me, 2000, NT, whatever).

I like XP a lot. I may marry it. I'm never going back.

How about the windows media fuck stuff??

I heard that using the default cack that comes with XP to rip mp3's and stuff makes the .wmf files sound better by hobbling MP3's.

Or did they cut that out?

I don't think it ever existed. XP comes bundled with Media Player 8 which has native support for drag-and-drop CD data/audio burning.

Microsoft obviously want you to use their home-grown WMF format, (fair enough, imo as it's compression rates are higher with less distortion than MP3s) but in no way does XP or Media Player 8 actively 'nobble' MP3 files.

You can find some more info, (though very dated now) here

Um put XP on last night after setting it all up..

I put Rc2 on a few weeks ago, uninstalled within 15 mins and put 2k back on :p

Thing is XP is just the same as 2k except it has a little extra's. If you dont like them you can just simply turn them off. So all the 'XP is crap' stuff is stupid because its just the same as 2k.

Those loads of little nifty options that make windows tonnes better to use and make it look that much nicer and cleaner. The bootime is reduced and you can log out with still keeping your programs running (Sweet :D) Haven't had many compatability problems and its not crashing at all.

So far its running fine, no problems at all and i prefer it alot more than 2k :)

If you come in and say XP is crap, put it on for a week and try it :)

Most businesses still use NT4.

True enough, but I'd be surprised if there were many companies that weren't at least investigating an upgrade. I know we are at work.

We calculated that 10% of our desktop PCs would need to be replaced to cope with an upgrade from Win95/NT4 to 2000. That figure would jump up to about 30-40% if we wanted to rollout XP. Ain't gonna happen.

innit heh :)
NT4 runs nicely 'nuff. we've locked it down pretty well, so there's no 'smart' users fscking with it :)
w2k test case is all done, cept for some politico's dithering about ADS desktop participation yea or nay. techs said no to a man lol, so the powers that be will prolly say they want it :(
