I hear it has an automatic dial thingy that it will keep on going to the M$ webby every fortnight or so to keep track of your copy of the software. Apart from that if its any better than Win ME (which doesn't shut down when I tell it to) it will be approaching fairly crap as opposed to complete shit.

I for one will not be getting it. I haven't paid for a M$ product yet and I certainly don't intend to start now.

Apparently WinXPs gonna be real slow, 4 times as much as Win2000. The reason, the min spec is a P500 compared to win2Ks p166!

Been playing with Win XP RC1 Pro for a couple of weeks.

Machine I have it on is a PIII 600 with 384 RAM.

Didn't notice much of a speed difference between XP and W2K on this setup - although XP does load up a lot quicker !

Don't like the new interface much, location of everything has changed again - but thats bit of a taste thing.

Stability wise seems very good - at least as good as W2k - never had it crash yet, and I'm using mostly W2K drivers.

Speed seems ok for gaming - similar benchmarks to W2K on 3Dmark, Q3 timedemo, etc.

Havn't really played much with the new utils, although I like the Packet Scheduler, which allows you to prioritise network traffic - works well with games :)

Upshot - can't see that it is much different to W2K, apart from the interface changes and a few new utils - shall wait a bit before taking the plunge.

But surely the question on everyones lips should be... "How on earth do you get round the Anti-Piracy measures?"

I won't put that on till I have cracks for everything. I don't want M$ telling me what to look at and in what format and then expecting me to pay for the pleasure :)

/me throws toys out of pram...

hmmm, will have to wait for new PC before getting it, but it looks very nice (by which I don't mean the blue) and if the new backwards support works well then there will be no decision involved and I'll stick it on.

At the end of the day, I really don't care if I have to register my product. It will be annoying when dealing with upgrades and suchlike if it doesnt work effectively, but then, so what.
Microsoft still have the right to protect their work just as everyone does and if people will continue to pirate then it's gonna get worse.

why they dont just use some sort of USB dongle type thing (surely feasibile with USB than it was with parralel ports) I don't know.
And God forbid that they should lower their prices....

Because like the Parallel dongle on Cubase 5 its still easy to get around :)

oh alright then :)

Surely though there is not way of stopping people breaking through it.
Software can be cracked. And a hardware solution requires the software which can be cracked.

I guess they want to choose a solution hardest for crackers to break, but, erm, surely using a key lock is foolish as people have had plenty of practice over the years...

TBH there will always be a way to break protection no matter what it is.

The crack basically gave me the product key and then three other files. The first one was a replacement for winlogon.exe and the second was to be run after copying the winlogon.exe file and a restart, this removed the need to activate in 14 days and the 180 days limit etc. The second file ran a dos batch file removing some other files.

However I'm using W2K Pro again for reasons I'll explain in my column.

Emb - where'd you get those cracks from ?

My version still has the expirations active, and I've tried a couple of cracks from astalavista, which gets by the 14 day registration thingy, but not the 180 day limit (although by 180 days the pucka version should (?) be out).

If you subscribe to MS Technet, you get all this stuff free :)

Costs about £500 per annum, but get your work to pay :)
