Do Athlon XP processors actually work any better with Windows XP? Or is that a well mislead myth?

Though I have no supporting evidence, I'd say... myth. If anything XP is likely to be optimised for Intel processors, though I believe that is also a myth.

Uh no, it says 'Microsoft designed and optimized Windows® XP for x86 processors like the AMD Athlon™ and AMD Duron™ processor families. ' It's akin to saying that Dos is optimised for Athlon XPs 'cause it's designed for X86

Both are meant to be optimized.......although it really has little effect :)

Is this thing safe though? I heard it isn't official as yet and knowing my luck it will probably ruin my otherwise nice 2k Pro install.

Working fine here.

Aparently we shall see today MS posting about the release on their downloads and update site.

Some people have found it causes errors in Windows Update.

Nice....

Well, if your anything like me, you'll be glad to hear that SP3 adds the ability to uninstall IE, Express and Media Player.
Can happy use Opera and Eudora without the fear or IE stupidity kicking in...

Bonus.

that's part of the DOJ thing afaik. It's in XP sp1 too, and it doesn't uninstall them, just "puts them to one side"
I'd rather use IE than opera anyway :p

So what are the best alternatives to IE & outlook express & media player?

Can we expect a cheaper windows without any of the above?

Nope you can still get them with Win2K, my last PC proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt.

imho? none. Perhaps eudora instead of outlook express for security reasons if you're overly paranoid. IE is the best browser, and with nimo installed media player will play anything perfectly. That's mplayer2.exe btw, not the skanky wmp7/8
