Well, I'm still not sure what to make of it, it's like a home console, that's a DS, that's a tablet, that's still a Wii...

?!?!?!?

Looks really good, but won't be a day one purchase, will see what developers can do with it first. I like the idea of still playing if the mrs wants to watch her soaps or something and doesn't want me to go upstairs on the PC. If its wifi then maybe people will create mods so you can stream from the PC instead. Just made myself a little excited.

I'm hoping this
The Register said:
The Wii U is backwards compatible too, supporting all previous Wii games and Wiimotes, which can still be used in conjunction with future titles. Don't put your old tech on eBay just yet guys.
also extends to GameCube titles.

The screen isnt a replacement to you tv. From what i saw its additional. So you get all the play calls for madden ( that they showed) and have the tv screen for the action etc.

So you still need at tv screen from what i saw

In the conference certain games can be played on the small screen if the main TV is being used to watch tv etc.

That makes less sense to me. Why would I ever want to look away from the TV?

You wouldn't but using Madden as the example, imagine being able to scrawl your player movements on the touch screen (like a sky sports replay) and then have the players move that way in the game.

How would that be better than doing it on the TV with a wiimote?

Actually from what I saw they showed that it worked in both of those ways depending on the game. They showed someone playing a side scrolling mario game and then their mate came in to watch baseball and they just switched their game to the small screen. There were also some people playing a board game just on the small screen. Then they showed a zelda game where all the action was on the main screen and all the menus/equipment etc was on the handheld screen.

I agree with ST^...

Having 2 screens that far apart makes no sense.

Think about it, in the heat of the action you need to do something on the touch screen to survive, you look away from the TV and search for whatever it is, and then you look back and find you are dead or in a position that will kill you.

I suppose that's what the pause button is for but how annoying won't that be really freaking fast if all you need to do is switch weapon for example... :)

Yeah I kinda agree, although it might be easier in practise than it sounds.

It's a new console I think.

New console. It's effectively a more powerful Wii.

Kind of guessed that they would use stock footage provided by the third partys.

It might, but on the other hand, that is a bloody big screen on there, so if this is to work they can't have more then general info on there like stats and stuff that we have no real reason to look at. :)

If they plan for ppl to actually use the touch screen, the controller buttons AND keep tabs on what's going on on the TV all at the same time, then it might be a tad confusing.

If they go on to have a proper online service in the same vein as XBL then I'm more likely to be impressed rather than this friend code bollocks they've had so far.

That said, there's a fair bit of potential in the screen, putting aside the usual "dump the hud on the tablet and call it a day" malarky.

They haven't said if multiple tablets can be used with it yet though since it's a dumb terminal(?) and presumably all the grunt is bein provided by the console itself. Is there enough power to push the same level of graphics to four of these things?

It's gay when nintendo try to be nice and allow retro fitting of wii bits.

I just sold my wii and most of what I had for it 2 days ago.

I guess it'll be like using the Gamecube controllers with the Wii though, I hope so anyway. If anyone here still has his wii, fuck you!!!! ><

£400 at launch, they can GTFO! Seriously, 400 quid for a machine with 2005 era graphics, fuck that. You can pick up a bugdet graphics card with more horsepower for under £50, essentially what you are paying for with Nintendo is the brand, an underpowered console for 2012 and a 'fancy' tablet like controller. I am sure the sheep will lap it up.

where did the pricing come from ?

They just lost their USP going from the cheapest end to the most expensive end.

Guess they hope they take the masses with them and im not sure they will with that in these days of cuts.

The price is obviously just retailers guessing so they can put it up for preorder.

Preorder pricing from Zavvi and a few other retailers, alot of people in the trade seem to think 349 is nearer the price it will launch at though. Will know more when they release details on CPU/GPU/Memory, until then it just guesswork based of the horsepower Nintendo says it has and factoring in the cost of the tablet controller. Oh and remembering that Nintendo will not be launching the hardware as a loss leader.

Is this really that bad though? My brother bought an N64 back in '95-'96 for around £300-£400 on day of release, it's hardly new.

I wonder if the Wii will continue to sell if they have that price range on the new console.
