G, while you're entitled to your opinion, which I respect, please don't make loosely disguised personal digs at me because my opinions differ from your own.

No personal digs at all, my dig is more at the perpetrated myth you posted; no that you're overweight. By all means, if you're happy then continue as you are and don't let anyone tell you otherwise; but as I stated I'm tired of defending those that play the excuse cards.

Nath, I agree it is in general by no means an easy road, I can't even shift another stone; but the mechanics of understanding why and what to do about it are reasonably straightforward enough I thought? Most of the effort is a mental change, to enable the physical change; and embracing the (in my opinion) simple effort to try a low GI diet, that made me feel fuller for longer and allowed my own body to make it easier for me by reducing my desire to snack on bad food. Eventually, macdonalds tasted far too salty and fatty, fish suppers were too greasy and chinese takeaway made me feel too bloated.

Still love Indian though...

I am a skinny bastard who can eat what he wants and stay slim. But I would rather be healthy, however like you I would never give up the choc.

Calculate your calorific intake and calculate calories burned Chet; i'd be interested to see what the results are.

Oh PS, i'm in the house by 4:30pm everyday ;)

I burn a lot off, because I am always on the move. But I eat about every two hours, it varies in healthiness depending on whether I am buying lunch or have taken it with me. I snack a lot. I eat a lot of crap. I weigh 81/2 stone, am 5'7" and will be 28 this year.

I'd have no idea where to start calcuting my intake or how much I'd burned.

Snacking is actually better than waiting a long time between meals. Ideally, you should eat every 2 hours, like you do. It keeps your metabolism running along, your body never gets starved of energy, it keeps you active. Going for long periods then binging is the worst possible.

I'd have no idea where to start calcuting my intake or how much I'd burned.

Well your probably eating enough to maintain your skinny figure.

If you're saying it's easy to see *how* to lose weight then I'd agree with that - it's always the same, eat a bit healthier, do a bit of exercise. Actually getting past the mental blocks to doing it though varies dramatically from person to person.

I think we are missing a big chunk of the arguement here - namely age!

Its a darn sight easier to lose weight in your twenties than your 30s/40s etc.

Your metabolism really does slow down as you get older - the little changes that would lose you tons in your twenties lose you a lot less by the 30s.

Practically everyone will have put on weight once they get into their thirties unless they are constantly monitoring it to obsessive levels :)

Metabolism is the big enemy when dieting - unless you basically starve yourself your body will eventually adjust to your lower calorific intake and your weight will stabilise - thats why there are so many popular short term crash diets because they take advantage of the lag between your intake dropping and the body adjusting but if you continued on them you'd see the weight loss really start to tail off after a while.

Its actually extremely difficult to really lose weight i.e. sustained loss rather than short term - everyone can lose a stone or two in the short term but it tends to rebound.

Perhaps we obsess too much over it - unless your morbidly obese its not really harming you whereas smoking/drinking/drugs are far far more dangerous.

One of the best ways to lose a lot of weight is to become either an alcoholic or a crack/heroin addict but I wouldnt really describe them as healthy...

Resistance training and putting on muscle mass will do that.

Just caught Gordon Ramsay on the TV, apparently royal marines consume 4000 calories a day, almost double the average man should intake. By christ they work for it.

Generalisation; maybe we should be treating them with psychiatry and not personal trainers?

I work long days and am knackered when I get home. If my mum wasn't cooking healthy meals for me and my dad everyday then I would be eating a lot of unhealthy and quick food.

5pm Tilda? FLMAO.

Fine, 6, 7 whatever, it doesn't matter.

Everybody's knackered when they get in from work, some people manage to cook decent meals.
When I was still at home, my parents would come in from working a 10 hour day, and cook a nice, home made dinner. Because they prioritised it.

I come in from work now after a long day and I do the same, I enjoy cooking, and home made food tastes so much better than supermarket crap.

Gaffer, so what if your partner doesn't get in till later, nobody says you cant start cooking when you get in, or have dinner on the table?
Sure kids take a while to get to bed, what's to stop one of you getting them ready for bed, while the other cooks? Or even eat with your kids?
These aren't valid reasons for why its "ok" to eat processed meals, they're poor excuses for eating processed crap when you're too lazy to bother cooking.
Fine if you'd rather slump infront of a movie/FH/tv rather than cook, but dont come along saying you have no time or are too tired to cook.

I think its also important to say, this isn't a dig at fat people, I haven't commented on dieting etc, and I'm not saying its fat people who are too lazy to cook, just lots of people are. Just view this post as anti-junk/processed food rather than anti-fat people.

Christ only knows. I can't think of anything that can realistically be done about it, but if people want to lose weight enough, they will.

sure, I guess doing that is much the same as the discipline to go to a gym, keep the house clean, etc. I utterly understand it being hard: I sometimes work irregular hours and/or weekends and it's really hard and takes planning to keep the good food coming through when you can get a pizza take away and a can of beer. I fail miserably tbh.

Thing is teeds, you're not saying "it's my metabolism" and recognise it's the pizza and beer, and the love thereof ;).

Don't blame you, I love pizza and beer :(

The way of most threads on here, off on some tangent that bears no resemblance to the original post.

sure Big G, though I do recognise that some people will always be hefty no matter what, just like Ch3tan will never be hefty unless he eats like, a barrel of lard a day.

Having said that. I was a fat bastard at >100kg / 1.73m. I cut down on unhealthy foods at unhealthy times and went to a gym. I bloody hated the gym (except when the girlies had their dance classes (yes, I am shallow like that)) but I lost about 18kg worth of flab. Now is 6 years later, I do not go to the gym any more, and I managed in the meanwhile to gain 15kg and lose 12 again. In all honesty, I do not think I eat unhealthy foods. I am certainly not a maccyD/KFC/etc or deep fried stuffs fan at all. I do like good foods though, and the odd pint/G&T/wine.

LOL I can just imagine the BMI test on the wii when Jup took it. His Mii reducing in size so much that it was no longer visibile to the human eye.

Its a pathetic excuse to say theres not enough time to cook. Full stop.
With all due respect, fo Tilda :p

Things like this can very easily be dictated by circumstance.

I'm glad you get in at 5pm but personally on weekdays I work from 9am often until gone midnight. I commute for over an hour which generally destroys all opportunity to eat a decent breakfast. Lunch is basically a sandwich grabbed where I can and when I get in at gone midnight my body craves nothing but sleep.

While I agree that processed food is crap, I'd love to see you start preparing a meal at this time (peeling spuds, etc) then cooking it :p
