Maybe because the average life expectancy a few centuries ago was around 35 = You felt old at 30?

However, to feel old at 21 is just wrong. Jeez I know for a fact I won't feel old at 21, I'd feel mature but fuck knows I wouldn't feel like buying a walking stick.
