Why are good CS players so good?

This is not a question about skill. It is a question about tactics that good players employ when they play.

I have studied decent players like jobbie, Swarm and Wifebeater (hello Perp:)) and have come up with these observations:

(1) they are patient. CS is a cat and mouse game sometimes and this means waiting for the mouse to take the bait before pouncing. I found that I tended to rush around looking for trouble a lot. Hence I became the mouse and more than likely the dead mouse. My Quake DM days still linger.

(2) they have learnt the best places to be on a map. Nooks and crannies where they have the best vantage points to shhot from without being seen;

(3) they alter tactics regularly to suit the situation. I said in (1) that they are patient, but they also know that a surprise rush can be just as potent.

(4) they are very careful. Jumping when going round corner and possible hiding points and frequently looking behind them.

Skill is a major factor, of course, but the mere mortals like myself can learn a lot from watching other players and learning how they play.

I used to find that when I was good at AQ2 I tended to want to win and used most of the points you stated...most probably could do better at other games, CS included, if I really cared to play them the way I used to play AQ2.

However most the time now I go on for a laugh and a little exercise :)

*blushes* :)

You're right though, the number of times me and an opponent will come eye to eye, I'll duck behind a crate whilst they empty out their clip firing at nothing...then the dreaded moment, they're out of ammo, frantically reloading.

Then they see me step out from behind the crate...The realisation hits them..."how could I have been so stupid", I pull my gun out and place a few rounds into their head. All this at zero risk to myself :)

CS is so much more about timing than anything else

(2) they have learnt the best places to be on a map. Nooks and crannies where they have the best vantage points to shhot from without being seen;
lol, this is becoming my downfall lately. People are starting to learn where my little nooks and crannies are (backalley vs FatherTed comes to mind...cunt) :)

LOL Ono are you joking? Jobbie not rushing? Mate whenever I have seen the man on publics he knows he has no problems and just rushes to claim the kills first. Unless i'm there to stop him, but hey thats a given.

Oh and Persplex where you been recently not seen you on the servers.

NTL have had a routing prob through Linx recently (about 3 weeks) so we get 400+ pings to BW :( They've sort of fixed it tho, so I've been back on BW servers a bit more. Played with a bunch of your clan last night :) Most of them were ok, except one that was an obnoxious cunt. His names evades me though, ho hum :)

Hey Pers i'm the only obnoctious cunt in my clan, you sure it wasn't one of the other cow clans out there?

I pity you peeps on NTL, i really do. when Telewest had problems with Linx it took them 2 days to fix it.

Suppose it may have been. The thought that there may be other clans called COW never dawned on me :)

The secret to Perplex's success is none of the above. It is far simpler. He pikes all my fucking kills. Don't be misled into thinking the cunt has ANY skill at all. He just stands a couple of feet behind me and makes sure he puts the last bullet into people.

LOL :(

I've been rumbled. I am the king of pikes :(

Getting us back on track. Most, if not all of the best players put lots of hours in, no doubt they've been playing FPS games since Quake and got hooked to such an extent that obtaining the LPB status has become their holy grail.
How often do these top players upgade their PC's ? Thus keeping their framerate as high as pos?
How many hours a week do they play?

GOOD CONN + PRACTICE = :)

Dont get me wrong, there are good HPW players out there, but they put the hours in to learn the maps and their limitations. IE. dont rush in when smoke grenades are being thrown everywhere - lagg.

As for me, I just dabble for fun and until I get a LPB conn thats the way I'll stay.

hmmm :)

Some things you say are correct Hoff, but however, I've been on cable for 2 months...and I was still better on 56k. You'll find if you are good, 56k gives you more of an advantage than LPB...man, I used to know some nifty bendy bullet tricks.

Also, I suppose we practice alot...but it's not a case of "wow, must get my 4 hours practice in today"...I enjoy playing, and hence tend to play a lot.

On another note, there's little point upfgrading much on CS. Even on my piii550 I was getting 100fps. This isn't Quake3(thank god), the HL engine is capped to 100fps.

I tend to upgrade for other reasons, of which I won't go into here :OP

I must admit that I was a much better player in my earlier days on CS with me 56k. Then CS was a culture shock having come from Quake 2 and Quake 3. I was scared to die back then and played as such ie. with more stealth and care.

These days with me ADSL I tend to connect and play for a few minutes here and there and just have a laff. My CS mentality has shifted to rushing and being some sort of Rambo player.

I also have a problem with camping as well. I hate it! But IMHO, camping (bombsite for CT and Hossies for T) does play a major part in the strategy of CS.

It's all a mental thing. I need to be more serious.

And I thought all u lot were like me, playing on a trusty old 133mhz PII and voodoo 1 card.

PS. the above is not entirely true.

Something not mention here yet (getting the thread back on track) is team awareness & radar use - far too many people seem to pay no attention to what's going on with the rest of their team while they play.

I watch death messages, I pay attention to where people go (loads of people go the same route on a map *every* time... easy pickings heheh) so when I see team-mates die I have a fair idea of where it's happening, some idea of where the enemy are... very helpful if you end up being one of the last few on your team alive :)

I've gotta stop aliasing though hehe.. nobody knows if I'm a good player or not cos I rarely play under the name GrannY :p

Thought you were talking about P1 since as you stated there was no PII 133Mhz...they started at 233Mhz or was it 266Mhz oh how the processors fly by :)

I agree about the radar.

I also think that many of the better players are actually only good at some maps.

I know, for instance, that jobbie rarely plays Assault or Seige. He loves Prodigy and Dust.

I personally use to like Tundra until they reduced the power of the AWP :(

Actually 233Mhz was the last P1 and the PII started at 266Mhz as I remember it ;)

Playing on maps you hate?

Siege -dont know why something i h8 about it, stops me getting kills and results in my arse being blown away.
Only thing i can do on siege is camp in thegarage and grenade sapm oncoming ct's. I just dont understand this map -also its a linear piece of trash which has no right being a hossie mpa as the ct's never see them.

Militia -I dont hate it I just have a problem with the textures outside, i cant see shit. This makes me fail. I can do okay if i stay indoors or go the sewers.

I dislike playing on a few other maps, but thoose are the one which make me look like a totall fooking newbie.

I couldn't agree more. Take Militia as an example while playing T's. CTs are on a roll, tooled up and rushing hard in 2 teams through sewers and rocks. 90% of the T's dive into the sewers and get blown to bits by grenades while the rest of the CT's raid the house and generally rape the 2/3 people left there.

It's not hard looking at the radar or pressing a couple of keys for team-comms is it ?

And people moan about wondering why some players score consistently high ..

Yep, I spend more time looking at my radar than I do looking at the rest of the screen.

I also REALLY wish they would change the radar to show you how far above/below someone is to you...maybe make the lines a little longer, or change the colour.

A perfect example of why is on militia. If you're on the roof, you have no idea whether the blips below you are in the sewer or on ground level

Also make the radar non-tranluscent. Easier on the eye against non-dark textures:)

Or maybe alter the size and position of the radar, then u could have one big one right in the middle.
That'd make ya look at it. :)
or are we talking Air Trafic Control here. :)
