Who likes Metal?

Anyone listen to black/death etc metal?

I mostly listen to stuff like Burzum, Darkthrone, Mayhem, Marduk, Immortal, Bloodbath, Dan Swano, Zyklon, Soilwork, Dimmu...loads of bands.

I listen to rock/metal in amongst all the other genres I like - mainly Metallica (Pre-St Anger - they were at their height in S&M imo), Pantera, The Darkness (they're fun).

The Prodigy, who with Fat of the Land are a fusion of dance & metal that works really well imo.

Nothing death or black though - Pantera would be the heaviest I listen to nowadays - when I was a teenager I'd listen to anything as long as it was loud and heavy.

Now though my tastes have diversified and grown.

Well you already know what I listen to mobius, the dreamfestival is a hint.

Maybe it's abit wider then most. And England which most of the guys here comes from never really struck me as a "black metal" country, it's even worse over in the states. I never have any deeper discussion about metal with any of em either so far. The extremer forms of metal has always been more of a scandinavian thing imo, and it's even more obvious in the case of black metal which is even more clearly shown by the fact that you exclusively only named swedish and norwegian bands.

I mean the only black metal band from the UK I can name right now without my mp3 archive at hand is Cradle Of Filth. And they themself have said that there not a black metal band (which I agree with).

(Checked my archive, there's Akercocke, Frost and The Meads Of Asphodel. All excellent bands but to my defense I favour death/grind/thrash over black. )

Never really got into Black Metal but I've recently been rediscovering some of my old Death Metal past like Morbid Angel, Death and Carcass. Good fun stuff

I used to listen to all the Metal bands of the late 70's /early 80's when I was about 16 or 17, Motorhead, AC/DC, Iron Maiden BlackSabbath etc, plus the smaller bands like Venom and Saxon and such like.
Its got to be said, in hindsight a lot of them were really bad.

Motorhead and -early- AC-DC excepted, I still like them really , even if Iwouldnt play it much.

Growing up in the eighties, and having an older brother I was into a lot of metal, largely a lot of hair metal and thrash. Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Exodus, Annihilator, Overkill, Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, Motorhead and a whole host others I can't be arsed to list, but you get the gist. Also covers Machine Head (who started out great, went a bit dodgy but are great again) and some other 90s metal bands but not many.

afaik Germany is pretty much into black metal, but hey they are into a lot and every artist is big in Germany.


I also listened to extreme metal in my younger days like satyricon, death, carcass, morbid angel and deicide but now I have grown up and become a nice and calm indie pop guy

The only metal I listen to now (if it can be classed as metal) is Rammstein, deftones and system of a down. All newish but still good none the less.

Yeah. Might have something to do with the fact they've got some really good melodies and some great playing on their album. And, like all good 3-piece bands: they don't sound like they've only got 3 members.

It's funny how I never ever meet fans of metal in real life but when I go to internet forums they're ten a penny. No offence meant.

Edit: the other funny thing is listening to metal fans talk about genres. Found myself on ultimatemetal.com the other day and all they were talking about was whether a band was black metal, death metal, doom metal, nu metal or one of the countless others. Almost as bad as house music fans .

There's always prejudice involved in any musicgenre. For example im not gonna tell a person I have had a total of 5 minutes worth of conversation with I enjoy listening to songs about death and mourning. I have a hard time with people as it is without having to alienate myself even more with all the prejudice involved with the sub-culture im into. It's kinda like going to a job interview and covering up your tattoed arms by wearing sleeved shirt. Since that's really how shallow some people are.

Like most prejudice it has to do with lack of knowledge or unwillingness to attain knowledge. If I think someone is openminded enough to give it a listen I might recommend it. Most people are not though.

I mean that would take some effort, and why do that when you can be spoonfed by mtv and commercial radio?

I mean I dont look like a person that would dig death metal. We all have the mental image of someone like that. A long-haired guy in jeans, a band t-shirt and maybe some leather boots, trenchcoat. So people often go "hmmmm" if they ask me what I got on my mp3 player and I answer "progressive death metal".

I get the feel that there are a larger percentage of "closet" listeners of metal then most others genres. The reason for that? Well id think it definatly has to do with the commercial aspect as well as the cultural. Obviously a song about someone wanting a girl to notice them is easier to sell then a song about wanting to kill the above mentioned girl for not noticing you. So the song about the cute teen angst ofc gets airtime to content sponsors who dont want to be asscoiated with such scenarios as the later song could have brought up. Whilst drug glorification, teen sex, sexism and just plain out greed is perfectly alright. And I mean since the word metal lately has come to be ascoiated with such "acts" as Linkin Park, Limp Bizkt, Evanescene and Slipknot I can understand why people are reluctant to say that they enjoy metal.

Ah right, I see. I've never seen that as a problem, but I get where you're coming from now. Especially as the one or two guys I've know who have admitted to liking metal have generally been the aforementioned leather boot-wearing trenchcoated types.

But the bands i like are like: Converge, Hatebreed, Madball, Botch, Get fucked, Jesuseater, and some emocore like Boysetsfire, Cave-in, Hotwatermusic.....etc

Ah lad, just sounds to me like you have been exposed to too much cannibal corpse (that band name always makes me giggle) or cryptopsy. Loads of good growlers out there.

I've always been into metal ever since my dim and distant youth.

It does make me laugh these days that what I like isn't considered metal by lots of people.

Recently was astounded to find a dj who wouldn't play pantera because "he only plays metal"

I did shift away from listening to metal for a long time though and only recently got back into it mainly as my current and ex flatmates are members of Interlock and there is always metal blasting around the house.

I feel the same way... I really love some Fear Factory and Dimmu Borgir songs but I can't stand the vocals. I never really got into death/black metal because of that.
