Who likes Metal?

I mostly like prog. metal, but some of the heavier stuff is good, too. What I don't like are cookie-monster vocals. I like the instrumental parts to most stuff, it's the vocals that put me off a lot of the time. It just sounds silly, tbh [Cookie-monster vocals].

Tbh, it was the growled vocals that first got me into Death metal. I guess they're either an instant turn-off, or the ultimate hook. The only extreme metal vocals i don't really like are black metal vocals. I'm talking of the kind you'll find on the latest Frost or Mayhem albums.

The point of black metal vocals imho, is to reinforce the evil sound. However, alot of black vocals infact sound like somebody trying to make an evil wailing sound, rather than actually sounding evil. I have pretty limited knowledge of black metal, but the only black metal band with vocals i like, are Thus Defiled. I saw them supporting Decapitated in Feburary, and was really impressed. That got me interested in black metal, but so far i've been dissapointed with some of the other stuff i've come across.



Death metal though, i really like. The latest thing to get me grinning uncontrolably are Desecration. Picked up an album by them at random in a second hand shop, never having heard of them before... Just felt like i should buy it. Got home and put it on, and was really impressed by their more traditional thrashy style of riffing, compared to the more technical stuff bands like Decapitated do. Their vocalist also has a really deep growl. That's my favourite kind of extreme vocal - Deep, thick, and unintelligable. Hate Eternal are probably my favourite listen.

Anyone into Doom, or Stoner rock? Not really listened to much, but it's really growing on me. Going to see Orange Goblin on Saturday.

I'm not a huge fan of that type, but as I understand it Orange Goblin are as good a place to start as any

I like strong vocals too, but I do like it when something is sung well too. Mostly now when I listen to any metal I listen to stuff like Dimmu Borgir, Samael (good vocals there), Emperor, CoF (I still like the mix of growl/sqeual ). Getting lighter (unless you count earlier stuff) I still love Fear Factory and Coal Chamber. Now Berzerker, there's some harsh 'vocals'.

Out of interest does anyone listen to Luca Turilli/Rhapsody and that ilk? Almost funny but good in its own way

Any Iron Maiden fans who don't already have the Rock In Rio DVD I implore you to get it, classic.

Yeah, i've got a couple Rhapsody albums. The whole over-the-top fantasy metal stuff is pretty enjoyable - I don't know how anyone couldn't enjoy songs about fighting dragons and such

I wouldn't really call Rhapsody metal though. Clearly, there's a power metal influence, both in theme and in the actual music... I would describe it as classical music, done with contemporary song structure, incorperating guitars. Not heard any of their more recent stuff though, so maybe that's a bit more guitar-dominated. One thing i always thought though, is what's their live show like? Surely they can't tour with a mini-orchestra... I would go to see them just for curiosity value.

Well, I mostly heard Rhapsody through Luca Turilli's solo stuff (he was in Rhapsody). I think he describes the music as Symphonic Metal, hence me dumping it here . I've not seen a show But I can imagine dragons, dry ice, mountains, fur and swords.

Doom = Candlemass, the label godfathers of doom pretty much fits :worthy:

Stoner = Spiritual Beggars, Michael Amott's (Carcass, Arch Enemy) side project, 70's inspired stoner, pretty cool stuff, im usually no stoner fan but this was cool, I like his usual work so maybe im bias though

Just feelt the need to recommend some bands, old habit, sorry.

Don't have any. Don't have much modern Death Metal. I only just started listening to it again for a change from my usual.

Decapitated is brutal polish death in the veins of Vader. Often mentioned together with big bro Vader. So if you like Vader chances are you'll like Decapitated. And polish death has always striked me as having alot of black influences so maybe your right. The drumming is insane. :O

been mostly into electronical music all my life, but lately ive been starting to listen to alot of alternative music and melodic metal, opeth, dark tranquillity to name a few

but still love stuff like lamb, hooverphonic, ez rollers, zero7, air, 4hero etc etc

but metal has been a new thing for me, cant stand the straight growling shit with no melody and no point, but stuff like opeth is really great

I love the Deftones. I listen to their music all the time on Napsterlinks. They're one of the greatest metal bands ever. I was just listening to the song "Minerva" online, and it just kicks ass. I think it'd be a cool song to drive to. What do you guys think would be a good metal song to drive to?
